The McLaren MP4/5 was designed by Steve Nichols, Neil Oatley, and Gordon Murray for the 1989 F1 season. It was powered by the naturally-aspirated Honda RA109E V10 engine and was piloted by two world champions: Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

The 1989 season was filled with contention between the two world champions, ultimately leading to their clash at the Japanese Grand Prix where the two collided at the Casio Triangle, leaving both stranded in stalled machines. Prost, who believed he had terminal damage to his car, retired from the Grand Prix. Senna, with a broken front wing, was bump started with the aid of the marshalls and went on to win the Grand Prix. However, he was disqualified by the stewards for using the escape road. Prost went on to win the 1989 World Drivers Championship.
