First and foremost you need to find the installation directory of this game. This is where the game files are. Be extra careful when tinkering around this directory, since your actions have effect on your games performance.

A somewhat typical path for your installation would be:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Realms of Arkania 1 BoD Classic

Now that you have managed to navigate to your installation folder, we are almost ready to start copying important files for backup.
Although Steam allows you to reinstall the game or check the games integrity, it's always wise to backup the important data incase for a blunder. But first, you need to create the folder for your backup files. Create the new folder to your desktop.

Now find BLADEM.EXE from the games installation folder and use 'Ctrl+X' to 'cut' it out, and 'Ctrl+V' to move it to your newly created backup folder. Do the exactly the same to INTRO.EXE.

Now we need to change the games language from english to german. We do this so that we can have the precious CD Audio that was formerly only available for the german version. The reason behind this was due to the copy protection of the game. We have to eventually face the copy protection issue later on when we start the game. But it's a no-brainer, so don't sweat it.




Now go to your game library and find the game called "Realms of Arkania 1 - Blade of Destiny Classic". 'Right-Click' on it and select properties.

Here you will find VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES... which is what will "reset" any blunders you have made, by formating the game back to fresh state. No need to do that now.

And this is what we came here to do! Change the language to german and navigate to Steam's DOWNLOADS view to check on it's conversion progress. This prosess takes a while since the german files are alot bigger compared to the english game files.

Now after the download has finished the transformation from english to german is complete! Open up your backup folder and create a new .txt -file inside. Then navigate to installation folder and open dosboxDSA1.conf in your text editor, such as Notepad. Scroll down to the very bottom of the text file to find the last line that should say:
Copy that line to your .txt -file and save it. The newly created text file is only for keeping that line of command safe for redeposit later on.

Now navigate to installation folder and copy a whole folder called DSAschick and move it to backup folder. Also copy dsa1_passwörter.pdf and make it a backup in the backup folder. Now open folder called DSA1 and copy following files: INTRO.EXE , SCHICKM.EXE and SOUND.CFG then move them to your backup folder.

Now retrace Chapter 3 and change the language back to english. This will remove every german file and revert back to plain old english files. This should be alot quicker since the files are alot smaller.

Now open your backup folder and rename file called SCHICKM.exe to BLADEM.exe. Copy this file and drop it amidst the main game files and when taunted, replace and overwrite it. Also copy INTRO.EXE and SOUND.CFG from your backup folder and drop them amidst the main game files and if taunted, replace and overwrite them.

Then back to backup folder and copy the whole folder called DSAschick and drop it amidst the main game files.

In the main game files open a file called dosboxrealms1.conf again with Notepad and paste your own text files command line here, the line and place it above the line that says
In the main game installation folder rename BLADE.DAT to SCHICK.DAT , and rename INTRO_A.OVL to INTRO_E.OVL.

Now that we are done editing the gamefiles, you should start the game through Steam. The game should launch without a problem AND with your new and fancy CD Audio soundtrack blasting from your main audio device! You are deeply humbled by this miracle.

Although the game may ask for CD, just simply ignore it by 'left-clicking'.

Only one last thing persists and that is the obnoxious copyprotection that harasses you by asking you these super secret questions about the games world. Lucky for you we already stole some of these cryptic passwords and placed them in your backup folder. The file named dsa1_passwörter.pdf contains some of these crypted questions, alas they are in german. But fret not for there are atleast some passwords in the main game installation folder under folder Documentation named highly misleading passwords.pdf. With these crypted and decrypted .pdf files you should be able to solve the great mysteries and commence the character creation, or continue adventure.
