I preordered Space Marine 2 and had high hopes, but what I got was subpar, to say the least. From the very start, the controls feel awful—this is a terrible console port that plays like it was never designed for PC. Keybinds still don’t work properly in either co-op or PvP (for example, it doesn’t matter what you bind the Q key to—it can only be used to “use ultimate” on a Devastator Marine). There’s no meaningful exploration; you’re forced down the developers’ path, through checkpoints and elevators, with no way to backtrack. Once you drop into combat, everything feels tedious, from repeated heavy-lifting animations to absurd elevator sequences where the protagonist types “7573” every single time.

The story is nonexistent. Tytus has no connection to the first Space Marine and feels like a placeholder, while the Chaplain (who somehow turns out to be Leandros from the original game) makes little sense. Characters doubt you for no reason, then inexplicably side with you. The diversity of the cast—one Black man, one Asian man, and a Scottish Chapter Master—isn’t inherently bad, but there’s zero meaningful character development. Tech-priests, who should feel imposing and knowledgeable, don’t sound like tech-priests at all, and the Scottish guy acts like a dire leader facing catastrophic events but casually says, “I can only spare two Marines,” as if it’s nothing.

Combat tries hard to be “epic” but ends up pretentious and frustrating. Tyranids are bullet sponges, forcing melee parries just to deal damage, while your own Space Marine feels paper-thin. Weapon variety is pointless; there’s no reason to choose one weapon over another, and ammo scarcity is constant. The story is often distorted to fit gameplay—jetpacks appear exactly when needed, only to be discarded afterward because “the air be too thick, brother.” AI is atrocious. Chaos Marines are also bullet sponges who stun-lock you while your gun feels completely useless. Forced animations constantly dictate where you look, robbing you of agency and reminding you that the developers apparently think gamers can’t follow basic cinematic intentions.

Multiplayer PvP is also a disappointment, arguably worse than Eternal Crusade, which is saying something.

In short, Space Marine 2 fails on almost every level: controls, story, combat, AI, multiplayer, and design all feel broken or shallow. I can see why some might enjoy it as a visual spectacle, probably fun on a couch with a controller, but if you want anything deeper, it’s not worth your time—or your money.
