A really promising luck-be-a-landlord-like.

Rather than just maximising points, you have to balance between food, damage, gold, mana, and health can also be a resource.

This means you can't just go all-in on one strategy, or all the same symbol like you would in other Luck-Be-A-Landlord-likes.

I found then, that the best tech therefore is that which lets symbols contribute to more than one of the resources, like the Crate which lets food excess become gold.

The other key diversion, is that enemy power, and player power scales pretty linearly. There isn't quite the level of disgusting force multipliers, and to go along with that enemy power level grows gradually. You are expected/required to "go-off" to some extent, but not in a way that feels like you have broken the game like in many deckbuilders.

My complaints would be the Duelist class available in the demo, and there seems to only one way to "go-off" with food. The Duelist has a strategy focused on Swords when melee weapons are kinda bad, seeing as you can't rely on them being adjacent to enemies when you need them to be. Food items seem under-powered compared to sources of Gold, Damage, and Mana.

Within 2.3 hours of Gameplay I have received 4 of the same crash.
Combined with the lack of manual saves, and automatic saves only saving at the end of a level, I am therefore unable to make progress.
I have a stable computer and do not have issues with any other game.
For a bug this disruptive to not be fixed almost a year after release is ridiculous.
Seems likely to me that is is De#uvo related.
Prior Arkane games have been released later with De#uvo stripped and improved performance out but I am not hopeful for Deathloop due to the Multiplayer element (although that could apply to Typhon Hunter soon).
I was going to wait for a potential DRM-free release but when it got reduced to 16 quid I thought it was worth a shot but I am sorely disappointed.

Very pretty despite not really stressing my computer much.
Controls are really good and immersive.
The float/glide/teleport can feel a bit slow and tedious but does it's job of reducing chance of nausea, and convenient controller-direction based free moving is available if you have the stomach for it. I used a combination.
Puzzles are really intuitive. The only "puzzle" I had to look up turned out not be a puzzle at all rather a really simple introduction to a mechanic - I was just overthinking it.
Story and voice-acting add an extra layer onto an already decent puzzle+exploration game.
I think I got this in a bundle and it was a really pleasant surprise when I finally got round to installing and playing it. Probably would have still been happy had I paid full-price for it.
For those that care, getting all the achievements is very achievable.

VR Games are good an' all but Social VR is where the future of VR is.
And Chillout VR has the potential to be the pinnacle of Social VR if it isn't already.
On the technical side of things it's flexible and performant.
On the people side of things is a friendly, creative and welcoming community.
The developers are transparent and by all accounts passionate about the project.
My only complaint is the name which I think sells it short somewhat :P

The crux of my problems with this game is that it has a heavy platforming component with no grappling mecanics. Want to get over a waist high wall? Your only option is to jump... which takes you out of crouch/stealth-mode.
Didn't jump quite high enough to land on a ledge? Watch as our character happily lets the ledge hit them in the face rather than try to grab onto it.
I'm sure all the cool stuff in the trailer is possible with a few hours of practise but I don't get how anyone but a masochist would stick with it that long.

Dishonored does everything this game tries to do better and has been cheaper than it in sales.

R.E Early Access:
This is a pretty complete game. Plenty of fun is to be had at this stage in development and the price is totally apropriate.

Slay the Spire is first-and-foremost a deckbuilding game in the veign of Star Realms and Dominion. This means each run starts out pretty simple with decisions being pretty obvious but the complexity ramps up as you modify the base deck. This is great for new and returning players but can be jarring if you go straight into another run after finishing a long run.

What this game gets spot-on is the balance of choice and randomness. Most of the time you will be presented with a number of randomly generated options to choose from. You can have your preferences but ultimately each run the cards and relics available to you will make the moment-to-moment gameplay distinct from previous runs.

The RNG/Skill balance combined with foresight (like Into the Breach you get to know what enemies will do on thier turn) means that when your run (almost) inevitably ends you don't feel like you screwed up but equally don't feel like you got screwed by RNG.

The difficulty is a little different from most Rogue-likes. I'm a Magic: The Gathering Player with experience of Star Realms and Dominion and on my first ever run I got through Act 1 and then died at the Act 2 boss. This took me easily over an hour. You can save+quit whenever you like but I would think that returning to a run where you have made significant progress could be daunting. I have not since got any further. Upon being defeated, I unlocked the other character but otherwise nothing to make the next run easier. There is a whale-thing that will offer you some options at the start of a run but they are only dependant on reaching the Act 1 Boss in your previous run. With a couple of good runs you can unlock the possibility of additional cards for your character appearing in the game but this takes exponentially more progress each time and the cards open up different options rather than being strictly better.

This is all a significant departure from other rogue-likes where starting afresh you will struggle to make much progress but steadily accrue things that make runs easier.
In Spelunky, real progress is in muscle memory and game knowledge. Slay the Spire doesn't have this either - all the information you need is presented to you in tooltips. With patience synergies and interactions are laid bare. It still makes me feel kinda clever when I notice and take advantage of them though.

In summary this is a very engaging game that is easy to learn and return to. Although deep strategically, it isn't however a game to fall into and devote yourself to. There just isn't much in the way of progression - for better and for worse. Totally worth the asking price.

Highly recommend. A superb blend of platforming and exploration. The level-gen means it is never frustrating - starting again means trying something new.
