Gems of War is a CCG Match-3 Puzzle RPG. Every one of these elements has a pivotal stake in the gameplay, so if any of these elements are considered undesirable to you, the game could begin to feel like a slog at certain points.

Cross-Platform between PC/Mobile, while the Xbox/Playstation versions are purely independent and are unable to connect across platforms. Keep this in mind when choosing which platform to play on. (Certain features are exclusive to Xbox and Playstation, while other features might be missing.)

Gems of War has come a long way from when I first started. This is a bit of a running theme with how active patches are in the game, completely reworking some mechanics every couple or few months. Adaptability is very important to have in this case. If you don't like change, whether in your team setup, new features, or reworked mechanics, I highly recommend you against playing this game.

But even among all the differences between when I first started and now, a few things have always remained the same. The core gameplay, the weekly excitement, and the amazing developers.

Core Gameplay
As mentioned in the beginning of this review, GoW has 3 very consistent points to stand on.

Collectible Card Game - If you've ever played a CCG online game, you'll no right off the bat that trading is a no go. There's no clear plans of this changing anytime soon either. So if you're desperate to get that one troop card you really want, you'll have to leave your fate in the hands of the RNG.

Match-3 Puzzle - Power up your troop's spells by collecting on board colored gems. You can match skulls instead to inflict attack damage. These are both very important to your success in winning a match. Troops spells often offer board control to manipulate the playing field to your advantage, or possibly screw yourself over. 4+ matches also offer an extra turn, meaning another free match before the opponent gets to play, so thinking out your moves and observing the board carefully are important.

Role-playing Game - Leveling, Ascension, and Traits are all key aspects in powering-up your troops to better handle opponents. Obviously some troops will outshine others, some times you'll need to use another team to handle the situation better than your primary one. There's many ways to learn how to build your teams, but the best one is the Arena, an important minigame that'll teach you team synergy and introduce you to all sorts of spells.

Weekly Excitement
Weekly events are what they're known as, and are a fun way to keep you interested in playing. Whether it's a new troop or Hero weapon, not a week's gone by since I began playing that there wasn't something to look forward to.

Some months a new kingdom is introduced, and other months we've got a whole new patch to explore! The amount of content provided so frequently is mind-boggling sometimes, and keeps my interest firmly gripped for whatever may come next.

The Developers
You honestly won't see them much around the Steam community or in the AppStore, but if you give their online forums[community.gemsofwar.com] a chance, you'll quickly realize how much attention they pay to player feedback. They keep active and enjoy chatting with the community, even when things get rather heated.

Support will also quickly look into and resolve issues as soon as possible, they've even offered apology gifts to compensate the delay on occasion.

Negative Points?
Some people have expressed concern or a hatred for certain aspects of the game, so I'll be addressing these issues here so you can know to avoid the game if they aren't to your liking.

  • F2P or P2W? - The game is most assuredly Free 2 Play. The most that money will reward you is Pay 2 Progress faster. I, myself, have not spent even a dime on the game. This isn't out of disrespect for the devs or because of a lack of thanks for an (imo) amazing game, but to help prove a point that everything in this game can be achieved without spending any money whatsoever.

  • Cheating AI? - The game has 50-100% random board drops. This is both a good and bad thing, as you can get massive cascades and possibly never lose a turn to the opponent (with decent board control), but the flipside to this is that the opponent has the same possible luck, meaning some matches can feel lost without any skill involved. This is rare, being normally a 1/10 chance you'll lose this way, but the better you improve your builds and plan out your matches, the less likely this is to occur. Just know that randomness is a factor.

  • Too Many Resources? - I won't sugar coat it. There's a lot to take in as the games progressed over this time. Gold, Souls, Gems, Keys, Glory, Maps, Traitstones. All of it's important, but the positive to this is how much there is to do! And you can never get stuck, there's always someway to recoup your losses or an alternate route of progression, but practice and learning are factors that never fade.

Verdict
So is this game for you? If the idea of a Match-3 RPG with countless hours of play (700+ hours now and not even halfway done) sounds interesting to you, definitely give it a shot.
