Absolum is super fun. Challenging solo and in co-op (but a little easier co-op, I think? I played the demo solo and it was a tougher if I recall). Does a great job of keeping things fresh even if you're replaying earlier areas by mixing up fights, events, lore dialogue, rogue-lite progression, secrets, and new side-quests as you progress. New run-specific modifiers (rituals) unlock as you complete areas and level up, which keep builds interesting - my personal favourite has been throwing the hundreds of thorn daggers my partner was spawning on every basic attack combo! It feels like a steal at its launch price, and a shame more people aren't swarming to pick this up.

extremely cute art, neat card mechanics/synergies, lovely easter eggs, realistic roguelite progression quests that don't feel grindy, challenging gameplay loop that gives variety in builds. good depth and feels feels polished, esp. at the price and relative to the standard of most games these days. i suspect there are one or two things that could do with tweaking balance-wise, but it might just be that i haven't figured out how to deal with those things yet (much like some Slay The Spire bosses/elites feel horrible until you learn the trick). recommending because i'm enjoying it, and 'mixed' (at time of writing, release day) does not at all reflect the fun i've had with this game so far.

I enjoyed Gotham Knights more than I expected, after seeing some mixed reviews. I'd watch a bit of gameplay and read some balanced reviews before buying, just to ensure the problems aren't things that'd be dealbreakers for you. I had fun with it and I'm glad I played past the 2hr mark, but I can imagine people with less patience for a bit of jank being unhappy. I did have a fair number of crashes to desktop, but they weren't mega regular and they were resolved by restarting my PC or rebooting the game. That's a fair dealbreaker for many, I just didn't find it that big of a deal.

General:
- Good amount of Batman-lore content: it assumes you have some familiarity with the characters and has plenty of references for fans. Doesn't babysit you too much by reintroducing well-established characters/villains.
- Decent world exploration with some rewarding challenges and sub-mission types. Though the bike/gliding feels a bit slow sometimes, I suspect that's just because of how good it was in Arkham Knight.
- Pretty good story, honestly. Idk why I didn't see the ending coming until the last mission, but it was a good ending.
- Good take on the Batman villains they introduce, and didn't drag them out too long.
- Satisfying stealth mechanics. Each hero gets slightly different perks - Batgirl can choose to avoid cameras, Tim can stealth takedown large enemies etc.
- Loads of customisation for gear and costume.
- I didn't try the multiplayer - I'm not even remotely interested in it - but I have not heard good things.

Combat:
- Pretty OK - some satisfying abilities and variety between the heroes. Not genre-defining but will scratch the itch if you've got a hankering for some button-mash combat that requires some mob management
- Not as satisfying as the Arkham games (no fun perfect tempo mechanic, no gadgets)
- You have abilities that require you to build up energy to use, which is fine I guess. Would've preferred them on a short cooldown with stronger counterparts requiring energy.
- No parrying, which was half of the fun of the Arkham combat imo
- Most of the bosses are damage-sponges. The fights are often well designed and engaging, esp. some of the bigger boss fights, but I would tune their hp down a bit. Make sure you're over-levelled and over-geared this won't be a problem, I guess.
- If there's a target camera lock button, I did not see it in a tutorial and spent the whole game having to chase enemies

Progression:
- Levels are shared between all 4 characters, but gear level isn't - even though the mobs in the world level up with you. That means if you want to try one of the heroes you haven't invested time into, it's possible - but you've got to be careful to gear up.
- Each hero earns their abilities separately, which is a ballache when you have to grind 'XYZ'.
- Gear levelling is fine, though it looks a bit like a mobile game - imagine it a bit like a watered-down Witcher 3 crafting. You get materials passively as you do missions, then you craft the highest gear stuff and add the coolest mods you have. You could build into particular elements if you want but there's very little need. I enjoyed it, personally, it's satisfying to start a new day with high-stats gear. I would think this is one of the biggest things that turned people off when starting the game, but it becomes a non-issue very quickly.
- It ended about the time I was ready to be finished with the game, which is very nice. I didn't find it too padded with filler. I didn't really chase any collectables, but I did a fair number of the mini-quests on the map because of the serotonin of the loot and the stealth takedowns.

tldr: good for the price + a fair amount of content to unlock, but not excellent.

its fun bc i like gwent, but some of the battles feel a bit pointless: in Slay The Spire or FTL you can lose hp or resources in even extremely easy fights, which is part of the fun - the easy fights in Gwent don't really carry any risk with them unless they suddenly pull out some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you weren't expecting, so they just soak up time and feel low-risk (some decks you can just throw down your cards absent-mindedly and still win - and doing so can costs you 0 resources). the elite fights require more concentration, but often because they rely on one gimmick you've got to shut down ASAP. they also often save some ultra-annoying card(s) until the very last turn, which can be a bit frustrating - but that's the game i guess. i still prefer the actual card game/witcher 3 version to the amped up pvp one they've developed. there're plenty of progression unlocks, though, which incentivises more playthroughs - and a bit of witcher-lore-story which is neat. decent at the price, but not as satisfying as FTL/Slay the Spire or W3 Gwent for me personally.

this game is a masterpiece. it's absolutely an S-tier VR immersive experience. it took me 22hrs to complete because 1) i am a bit of a wimp 2) i was very thorough and took my time enjoying the views!

the good:
- the story is brilliant
some of it will go over your head if you haven't played the rest of the HL series (especially HL2:E2), but i really enjoyed the pacing and motivation of the narrative; the contributions to the HL lore are huge
- extremely immersive
the detail in the textures makes it feel real. i ran it on an Oculus CV1 and 1060 - i was blown away.
- the combat is great for a VR game
VR combat is usually a lot of standing still and dodging projectiles; HL:A forces that out of you, but gives enough windows of opportunity to not feel too punishing or rushed.
- the exploration is rewarding
the maps are super well designed - great to look at, sensible layouts, well hidden goodies
- the characters are written wonderfully
some very funny quips and meaningful moments
- satisfying puzzles
well designed VR puzzles, none of which felt frustratingly difficult or patronisingly easy
- gravity gloves are so much FUN

bad:
- jesus, this game needs a 'horror' tag. it's definitely 'action, adventure' but there are some moments that really had my heart up. i'm not a big horror fan and it didn't stop me from pushing through, but there's one part of the game in particular that i just could not wait to be over. it probably won't push horror-seekers, but for those of us with lower tolerances to jump scares: you might have to change your underwear a couple of times.
- weapon variety is very limited, and on the harder difficulty settings some of the enemies are bullet-sponges in a way that breaks immersion. the weapon upgrade progression is good and feels meaningful despite this!

I enjoyed A Hat In Time, but I really don't have much to say about it!
*I did not play the DLCs

Good:
- Very satisfying platforming with lots of mobility. It doesn't aim to be Celeste or Super Meat Boy, so don't expect a challenge.
- A few interesting gameplay mechanics
- Funny content for all ages (often hidden in books, side conversations, signage etc)
- Soundtrack is upbeat and of good quality

Bad:
-

Overview:
A Hat In Time is an easy but very satisfying, mostly open platformer. Lots of fun bouncing around different worlds looking for collectables. It is not even remotely difficult and it's very cute - so would make a good intro to games for someone younger. I'd have loved for it to be more complicated, but AHIT achieved what it set out to do very well.

This game is a really excellent twist on the battle royale formula. You enter a game with your loadout pre-prepared on a monster hunt; your objective is to locate clues that direct you to a monstrous target (of a choice of 3 bosses, with each of the 2 maps randomly having 1 or 2 a time). This being a PvPvE game, between you and your target is a sprawling terrain dotted with clusters of buildings and points of interest filled with a variety of zombified baddies and other players attempting to do the same thing as you. If you collect the trophies and leave alive, you are rewarded with XP and money to kit out your hunters. If you die, you're dead.*

*After reaching a certain rank

Pros:
- Lots of weapon variety with fairly good balance - some weapons are better than others, but are balanced by scarcity of ammo, more awkward ironsights and expense
- Excellent sound design - triangulating your targets is pretty core in this, and things like broken glass, branches of the floor, hanging glass bottles, disrupted birds will all help you be aware of other players. Some of the gunshots and explosions can be heard across the map
- Every game is different. Some games you'll have a clean sweep where you pick up bounties for multiple targets after wiping 3 teams - others you might not see another player at all.
- Interesting character variation. When you buy hunters, they will come with a loadout (that you can edit) - which, as you level up, will include some random perks. When you level your characters up after a successful run, you can spend points on picking perks that might suit your particular playstyle.
- Dynamic fights. Your fights are constantly at risk of being disrupted by neutral mobs if you aren't careful. There're huge numbers of consumables and tools you can use to distract, trap or bomb your enemies.
- Comprehensive tutorials that reward you with premium currency*
- They just added a Trials mode that give you fun and difficult challenges that test your game knowledge and mechanical skill
- Multiple ways to detect if people are camping!
- A faster quickplay mode focused on PvP that gives you a free hunter if you survive
*Premium currency is reserved for adding character slots to your roster or unlocking skins, nothing game-altering!

Cons:
- Honestly can't think of many. It'd be nice if there was a proper killcam so you could evaluate just how dodgy a shot that killed you was, or a way to see how much damage you did to someone before they killed you.
- I personally cannot play it solo because I will have a heart-attack from being on-edge (same thing in PUBG :D)

TLDR: I enjoyed XCOM: Chimera Squad. I would recommend it to people who liked the combat of the more recent XCOMs. After patches, I have seen almost no bugs. The lower stakes stop it feeling as satisfying as the core XCOM games; but if you take it for what it is (a smaller, cheaper spin-off), and you're itching for some more XCOM-style gameplay, you will get some valuable hours out of it.

My XCOM background:
I have hundreds of hours in the main XCOM reboot games/expansions, but little to no time in the mods like The Long War. I love them a lot and have very few bad things to say about them (apart from those obnoxious timed-objective missions). I did buy this on release for much cheaper than full price. I played this on expert difficulty.

PROS:
- Good ol' XCOM combat with a more dynamic pace
- Loooads of new items
- Loads of new abilities
- Loads of new enemies & scenarios
- New encounter-style missions are a good tempo controller
- Timed mission objectives, for the most part, are optional and have minor rewards so you don't feel like you're missing out if you can't pull them off

CONS:
- Bugs. Much fewer than on release, but there are still occasional bugs. Only really a red flag if you're likely to rage at that sorta stuff.
- The characters/story are pretty boring. The dialogue is non-stop and it's terrible.
- More overworld 'anarchy' management. This might just be a 'me' thing, but I find it arduous to feel like I have to juggle district happiness.
- As far as I know, there's one healer - and she feels pretty necessary to have in every squad (though you can equip health kits).

DOWN TO YOU:
- No permanent character death. The missions restart on character death. I personally sort of liked this - the challenge of that sort of overall resource management doesn't appeal to me very much - but if you want hardcore consequences you'll have to look towards other things (in difficulty modes I did not play, so cannot comment on).

probably one of my favourite games of all time. this game does exactly what it sets out to do, and it does it incredibly well. it's fun, challenging, and there is near-endless replayability. and i don't mean in a "gosh i could play Endless mode forever" way, i mean in a "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ there are so many endings i want to get them all" Binding of Isaac way.
