Xenon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless noble gas that is nontoxic, nonexplosive, and environmentally friendly. It is more than 4.5 times heavier than air.
Discovery
Scottish chemist William Ramsay and English chemist Morris Travers discovered xenon in 1898 as a residue left after evaporating liquid air.
Name
The name xenon comes from the Greek word xénon, which means "foreign(er)," "strange(r)," or "guest".
Uses
Xenon has many applications, including:
Lighting: Xenon is used in lighting.
Medical imaging: Xenon is used to image the brain, heart, and lungs. It is also used to measure blood flow.
Anesthetic: Xenon acts as a natural anesthetic.
Red blood cell production: Inhaling a mixture of oxygen and xenon increases red blood cell production.
