Art is amazing, Story was decent, bit generic war movie stuff but they made it work with the writing. I like that they had a more sober take on the horrors of war and it wasn't all a 'blood and glory' sort of fantasy.

But the important part is gameplay, and I wasn't a fan. It's one of those RTSes where movement is really slow, and I spend a lot of time waiting for things to happen. You also select troops in groups rather than individually, which is not bad in itself, but this game also has mechanics that require micro (stealth, cover system, items, foes you have to hit from behind, etc.) and said micro can get pretty hair-pulling due to the controls: you'll have troops breaking stealth or running directly into flamethrowers and gunfire when you want to move, that sort of thing.

IDK, maybe I'll try it again at some point and it will click at a later stage, but so far clearing most of the first level, I've mostly just felt boredom and occasional annoyance at the micro controls.

Idk how to rate this game, more of a neutral rating than a purely negative one,

- I somehow clocked 160+ hours, but I will admit a vast majority of it was because its a free game that I can play with friends. So I'll give Paladins this much credit, first of all: it offers a free co-op experience and that's good.

- Further, I must say I really like the deck system and I think other class/character-based arena shooters should learn from it.

- I'm also a huge fan of certain champions: whoever made the turret man a tank with utility mini-sentries deserves a damn raise firstly, what a good take on an otherwise boring trope. Fernando also gets compared to OW's Renhardt a lot but Fernando feels completely different and much more dynamic. And then there's heroes straight out of left field like Atlas, Mal'damba, Imani, that I just love for being so original.

But my experiences with the gameplay itself overall aren't positive,

- 19 out of 20 games I'm either stomping or getting stomped, and stomping doesn't even feel good because I'm just afk on a point for half the game watching my opponent's death timers.

- While the characters are an overall positive, there's one or two that are truly questionable. Like that Vivian character just...left clicks. That's it, that's her entire kit. Either she's utterly busted like she was a year ago or she's terribly weak. How do you plan to balance this?

- Also kind of tired of the current roster. As much as I like the heroes, as a tank main I've been playing the same 10 folk for god knows how many games and Hi-Rez promises 1 char per year. Meanwhile fraggers have 28 options! No wonder everyone wants to hog DPS, heck, even I want to now that I write this.

- The game itself is pretty scuffed from a technical standpoint. Friends and I regularly experience crashes/disconnects, frame drops, loading screen sounds getting super loud and blowing our eardrums. Some textures and shaders lately have also started showing up as blurry/not fully loaded (mid settings, and I have a 11-month-old 3060 that runs AAA titles just fine). Not sure what can be done about these issues but its pretty annoying.

The good:
  • Story, A+. It's probably not evident from the marketing strategy but this is a story-focused game, and it tells a damn good one. If you decide to pick up the Ascent, do yourself a favor and don't skip the dialogue.
  • World/lore, A+. Forget your shiny neon lights and flying cars: In the dystopian future, your city streets will be lined with garbage, gang shootings will kill bystanders on a daily basis, and you won't be able to afford a car, forget a flying one. This game truly understands the central theme of cyberpunk and never forgets it.
  • Art. No comment, see the trailers and screenshots for yourself.
  • Combat. It's pretty decent overall, just needs more item choices (and maybe a bit of polishing/rebalance) and it could be truly amazing. The main thing I disliked was that some 50%? of the weapons in the game deal Ballistic damage, so finding a new weapon would be like "Wow cool! Oh wait, I already have a cool Ballistic-type weapon" and it would diminish the excitement.
  • Map design. I really enjoyed the old-school-RPG-style level design where there are foes of different levels and you can dive into a high-level area and get wrecked. Games need to return to this style more, its fun.

The Bad:
  • Visual clarity bugs/issues, namely bloom and lens flare. This is the biggest flaw by far. Adds zero immersion to the game as it obscures not only gameplay but also the beautiful art assets. Either provide an option to switch it off or just get rid of that nonsense entirely.
  • Mechanical information. For example, what does +1 ballistic resistance on my gear even mean?
  • On that note, armor doesnt feel consequential enough to the game. Like there's a huge difference going from white to purple obviously, but a low-Ballistic res purple vs a high-res purple? Can't tell. Likewise for the bonus attributes, can't feel them. Would be nice if I could get perks on that armor, like a free burn proc every 30s or something.
  • I actually didnt mind the lack of a minimap (I think more gamers should learn to play without it tbh). But if there's no minimap, the player needs ways to identify where they are: unique buildings, for example, or unique foes. Right now some streets just have reused or similar assets (e.g. around Black Lake Towers) and that can create a very frustrating navigational experience.
  • weapon skin bug. Hope my skins arent gone forever and I can get them back when a fix happens
  • fullchrome quest bug. Was annoying
  • My secret achievement ||"Win"|| is also bugged. I clearly have all the requirements but I dont have the achievements.

TL;DR:
An alright game that could be amazing if it wasn't hindered by bugs and technical issues. Think I had some of the best gaming moments this year with the Ascent. If Neon Giant could patch-fix the most influential issues, they would have a great first title in their hands, and I would be happy to pay for content DLC in the future or whatever else this studio has in store.

The Good:
- Writing's not bad. Started kind of cheesy but they made it work for kid Kamala (kids are cheesy after all)

The Bad:
I really hate to say the entire rest of the game is bad, and it's not a statement I make lightly. But there's no other way to describe it. There's just so many poorly implemented, broken, or straight up weird things I can find just a few hours, detailing them all would make this review longer than a college paper.

But okay. Here is, IMO, Crystal Dynamic's biggest error: coherent direction.
If the game is to be a brilliant and deep story about Kamala Khan, then make it one and market it as one. If the game is to be a fun beat-em-up action brawler with loot mechanics, then likewise. Trying to do everything at once detracts from the game rather than adds to it.

Think about it: if it's Friday evening, your player is back from work, short on energy and brain cells, and just want a game to beat up some things, do they really want to boot up this Avenger's campaign and end up forced into an entire stealth and parkour section beforehand? If your player just wants a quality story about Kamala Khan, should they at the same time be forced to learn 6 very different character movesets in a complex action brawler AND have to think about loot and stats?

All in all, this game is a waste. Pretty sympathetic to the devs for this one, esp. the writers who clearly tried their best. Less sympathetic to whatever management coughed up this freakshow of a game idea and even thought about charging $40 + $18 per skin.

I had a few significant issues that contribute to a negative review:

1. The game refused to detect my controller...
2. ...so I tried mouse & keyboard and could not rebind my keys. The menu option is there but it doesn't save my settings.
3. On MKB, I cannot find the button to pick up items. It's not in the settings (although it does exist for controller) and I tried tapping all buttons on my keyboard while standing over an item and nothing worked.

As for the game itself, I managed to get through the first floor with no items and it seems alright. But I cannot continue playing the game with obscure unchangeable keybinds (why is the default dodge bound to U?!) and being unable to pick up items.

Bought this by mistake as I intended to get Zwei: the Arges Adventure, which looks a lot better than this one. But since I had already purchased it, I figured I might as well try it out.

In short, the game begins with about 30 minutes of unskippable cutscenes, which outline an anime story that is less interesting and more cliche than the average porno plot. As for gameplay, apparently this game is similar to the Ys games, which means you move around and attack things, but I wouldn't know. The opening was so boring I quite literally fell asleep and left it on for 5 hours, exceeding the refund window. Oh well. At least it was cheap.

A somewhat unique game. It's technically a co-op survival similar to L4D, but instead of automatic weapons you've got high fantasy face-bashing in the Warhammer universe. It also has some RPG progression in a similar leg to Deep Rock Galactic.

The Good:
- Very dedicated dev. This is probably the biggest thing going for VT2. Small or periodic as they might be, the fact is there are still updates and DLC, and that keeps player population going in a game that really needs it.
- Writing and voice acting is excellent, maintaining a certain dry wit while not straying too far from the grimdark nature of Warhammer. A breath of fresh air in an industry with a fair bit of dull writing.

Mixed:
- Combat is generally good, and I wouldn't drop 200 hours in it otherwise. My only gripe is guaranteed disable mechanics like leech/gutter runner (smoker/jockey in L4D) is kind of bad in such a melee-focused game. It's okay if you're playing with a squad of friends who can organize players with bows or etc, but in online matchmaking you're somewhat forced to equip a weapon that can handle these mobs, which pigeonholes builds quite significantly.

The Bad:
- my single biggest and longest gripe with VT2 is the "whoosh" sound cue that alerts players if a mob is about to attack from a blind spot. I have a lot of trouble hearing this sound, especially with how noisy this game can get, then I get hit randomly and die. It's a small thing but it is highly crucial to gameplay and I wish I had options to change that sound.
- I've found the RNG in the new Chaos Wastes game mode frustrating rather than fun. I heavily dislike weapon RNG: using a disliked weapon type or a low power weapon just adds frustration to the game, and getting a good roll isn't really satisfying either. I propose this should simply be normalized to orange/red power for the whole run, and instead there should be more variance in boons and tilesets, which are already feeling stale to me after about a week of playing.

All in all it's a good game. I certainly enjoy the experience as I wouldn't have played it so much otherwise. Is it a 10/10 game? Eh, I think there is ample room for improvement. But no matter what, I recognize the dedication put into this thing, and I'm happy to support this game with my time and with DLC/MTX purchases.

Pros:
- Unique and interesting gameplay - it's a tower defence city builder with roguelike deckbuilding
- Very fun for the first 20 hours or so, depending on how good you are at TD games
- varied and interesting class mechanics and cards

Cons
- Game gets quite RNG-reliant at higher difficulties as there's a fair number of bad cards (bit of poor balance) and there's not many ways to pad against bad luck. If you don't get the cards you need your run just sort of withers and dies.
- Monsters are also RNG (which is not bad in itself) but you can roll some really annoying stuff, especially on the beach tileset. Like you'd be having a great run and then one bad wave screws it all over.
- Couple of UI issues: no numeric stats on deployed units; the time gauges for "Service" cards are way too small for me poor eyes

Other
- You get access to more cards as you play, This is kind of good because a lot of the cards gained from levels are interesting and strong, so it promotes playing more even if you suck / fail a lot of runs initially. Yet it's also kind of bad because it dilutes the card pool, so the more you play the more subject to RNG you become.
- graphics are sort of cartoony and, err, kind of 90's-looking? I like the aesthetic but not everyone will.

I'm not really sure if I can put an overall rating on this game. The first 20-25 hours were the most fun I've had in a while. But after I started chasing achievements and higher difficulties, I did notice my enjoyment of the game falls off quickly if my RNG is bad. But all things considered I think it's a good game, and a great game if I just play casually.
