The type of game that only sickos who watched surgeries on National Geographic or the Discovery Channel while eating a meal as kids could enjoy. Like me.

Humour aside, this game captures the horrors which endoscopy can offer (and more) very well with its early 3D game console look. It does get somewhat repetitive though, but it's worth playing through it just to see what's next.

This is far and away, the most atmospheric and expansive space game yet that has been released (as of time of writing). Maintained consistently both in quality and frequency by Hello Games, there's always something new every couple months.

The main gameplay loop can feel rote rather quickly however, particularly in the first 10 or so hours. Only after 10+ hours of gameplay does the rest of the game truly begin to come out and when it does, it can be rather difficult to pull oneself away from it for too long. A great game to chill out in, due to the general ambiance imbued in the game by the music and visuals. However, it can also be exciting at times from dodging swarms of Sentinels (read: planetary police) to absolutely massive dogfights in space.

No other space game comes close, other than Star Citizen perhaps. But that isn't out of Early Access nor is it on Steam yet, as of time of writing.

Haven't really been able to get into the monster-collecting genre of games, until playing this one. The fusion system helps differentiate it from others, keeping it fresh for longer than it otherwise might've been without. Runs extremely well too, due to its use of the Godot game engine. The story is fine and the soundtrack is great, even when listened outside of the game.

Short but sweet, CHUCHEL is an adorable little point-and-click comedic cartoon game. Great purchases on sale, when it goes for very cheap. Soundtrack is rather goofy and fun to listen to as well!

Looks great, performance is getting better often, responsive smokes are very fun, and per-map ranks ensure that you're always queuing with people around the same map proficiency.

The real highlight though is the default CS2 soundtrack. It's such a banger, that you'll still be hyped to lose 0-12 in Premier!

Very simplistic, yet rather fun with friends. Just mix up what game modes are used every once in a while, as the game can pick some of them too often after a couple runs.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S SOURCE

This is what I said to myself during the back half of the game. Black Mesa is a remake of the first Half-Life game from Crowbar Collective. Starting out as a mod for the original game's sequel before becoming its own game with the blessing of Valve, it has been more than a decade in the making. By coincidence, it also happened to release in the same year as a new HL game.

Going On a Rail with Black Mesa Inbound is still one of the best introductions to a game's world, and this game only improves on the original with updated graphics as it goes on. Going through a Hazard Course filled with Anomalous Materials in an Office Complex as a result of Unforeseen Consequences from Questionable Ethics is still great fun and is improved not just in looks, but gameplay as well with punchier weapons that both feel and sound more impactful as players Power Up gradually throughout the game with more weapons at their disposal. The soundtrack is also a delight and well worth listening to both in-game and on its own, enhancing the experience significantly.

The game recently (as of time of posting) got a Definitive Edition update which fixed a lot of bugs and managed to make this game look even better, all the way from smacking headcrabs in a Blast Pit up to the Endgame fighting the Nihilanth as an Interloper within the stunning ground-up reimagining of Xen. It pushes the ol' Source Engine to its limits and manages to prove that great games can still be made in it to this day.

This is a remake that both old-timers and newbies to the HL franchise should really play through all the way to the end and is worth getting with or without a sale, leaving players unable to Forget About Freeman for a long time to come.

While admittedly there's fun to be had with friends at times, the game is still too flawed to be an enjoyable experience in the long haul.

Firstly, the optimization (or lack thereof). The amount of RAM it consumes is frankly a tad too much. It is barely playable even on a machine equipped with 8 GB RAM. Graphics-wise, it cannot run at or beyond 30 FPS consistently even on certain gaming laptops or mid-range desktop GPUs beyond low settings with some set to their lowest values.

Secondly, the artstyle. Like many in its genre, it aims for realism (for the most part). Even on the highest settings, it still looks quite dated compared to contemporary counterparts. Definitely has not aged well in the aesthetic department, especially for those who don't have top-tier desktops.

Third and lastly, the bugs. Oh dear goodness, the bugs. When playing with friends, there is a chance that a player will suddenly lose everything including XP and inventory. In the case of me and my friends, the person hosting has to resort to using admin commands as a workaround for this. There is no shortage of graphical bugs regardless of OS (Windows and Linux), renderer (DX11, OpenGL, and Vulkan experimental), or hardware. Additionally, it is quite likely that at some point someone dies by merely brushing against anything (presumably related to collision and clipping). There are likely more that haven't been found by me or my friends, though.

Overall, the game is only really enjoyable after many hours of playing. Or at least it would be, had it not been for the bugs and almost abominable lack of optimization. The aesthetics are personally a comparatively minor criticism personally, but it may be more important to others. The game has been in alpha for years, and it unfortunately shows. Such a shame too, given that without all these issues it can be a great game. But with taking everything into account, it is only ok at its best.

Far too chaotic for me, personally.

Also, fsck Psyonix and Epic for pulling Linux/Mac support.

Ok, let's get the bad stuff out of the way first. There's not that many of them anyways.

Note to Linux users: There is a special section at the bottom of this review for you penguins!

Roach can be quite hard to steer around, especially if you need to make quick turns on a whim. Really wish the game would've taught or mentioned that holding down the attack button on horseback slows down time early on in the game, instead of in a quest within an expansion. Roach can also take some time to jump, oftentimes leading the player to be stuck on a minor obstacle or raised bit of level geometry. Calling Roach is also not reliable due to her (she's a mare) pathfinding AI being finicky at times. Constantly and consecutively taking contracts can start to be a bore over time; ideally, take a few of them in intervals interspersed by primary and secondary quests to prevents this phenomenon.

Now that those are out of the way, let's get to some of the good stuff.

Story-wise, this game has some of the best out there yet. Even secondary quests and questlines are very well-written. While the gameplay mechanics are somewhat more complex than Bethesda RPGs for example, the game does a good job of introducing them to the player over time except for the bit about slo-mo horseriding combat mentioned earlier. Players are encouraged to explore and create their own path by the maps, quests, gameplay mechanincs, and more. Choices in the game's story do actually affect the narrative, for the most part. Characters are memorable and voice acting is top-notch. The graphics most certainly do hold up rather well, at least when this review was written. Newcomers to the Witcher franchise may get a bit confused at times since this is the third game in a trilogy of games based upon a series of Polish fantasy stories, taking place after the source material; if a player has watched the Netflix series, then they shouldn't be too lost in this to be properly confounded.

In summary:
Despite some minor flaws, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt more than makes up for it with a beautiful and storied world, well-made gameplay mechanics, and a bevy of possibilities for players. Worth every unit of money spent on it, especially on sale.

Getting the Game of the Year Edition with the DLCs and expansion packs is recommended, as the former can all significantly enhance the base game's experience. As for the expansions, they tell whole new storylines and equipment well worth most other games each; this is especially true for the Blood & Wine expansion, since it gives a whole new region to go around.

For Linux players:
It is recommended to use ACO in Mesa for AMD players, as it's causes significantly less stuttering and dropped frames than using regular LLVM. If using regular Mesa, enter this in the Launch options:
RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
If using the Mesa-ACO fork, then nothing more needs to be done.
