I've played and enjoyed Marathon so far, and I really do recommend people try it. With one caveat: do so with friends. The game's fun factor increases tenfold if you have a squad to play with.

The game advertises solo play (which I've been primarily playing) but it's hard as ****. There seem to be an infinite number of things that can kill you on Tau Ceti IV. Time to kill (and by extension, to die) is surprisingly short. As a result, solo play is very unforgiving. The Rook shell makes things slightly easier, but it's still a significant challenge. (Also you can't advance your contracts as Rook, which is a huge downside.) You think Dark Souls was hard? Try playing this game without friends.

Other than the inherent multiplayer nature of this game, I have no other complaints so far. I was worried the system requirements were going to be too steep for my potato of a gaming PC (see my specs) but I've been pleasantly surprised with them. So far I've been able to play without any technical issues.

Pros:
-Gameplay is action packed (when it wants to be...see cons)
-New PVP mode with NO RANDOM LOOT BOXES! (I mean, I tolerate random loot boxes like in Call of Duty and Destiny but it's nice to see a triple-A game buck the trend)
-The bad guy, El Sueno, is actually an interesting character
-Real sense of character progression
-Sometimes the mix of stealth and open-world action gameplay works really well (again, see cons)

Cons:
-Inconsistent quality in mission design. Some missions are unnecessarily hard (such as some insta-fail stealth missions) while some are easy because they resemble the missions of other open-world action games too much.
-The main characters you play as feel flat and generic
-Story not as well-written as other Tom Clancy games
-The new PVP mode is not noob-friendly in terms of gameplay (although thankfully I haven't been cussed out yet)

Would I recommend? Well, let's just say I'm glad I got this game when it was on sale for cheap. On sale, I felt this was a worthy purchase. Full price, not so much.

Dangerously Addictive Fun

I'm sort of an anomaly among video game players - I tend to get bored with sandbox games. I dislike the lack of direction they provide, and what to me is a lack of an effort by the developer to tell a good story, instead wanting the player to do all the work.

When I purchased Elite: Dangerous, I wasn't expecting a space sandbox game. I kind of got fooled by the advertisements, and expected it to be combat-heavy and story-driven. So imagine my initial disappointment when at first it turned out to be, in the terms of many other players before me, a "space trucker" game. I was thinking at that time that this was going to be another example of a modern botched game in this genre like X Rebirth. (And I gave X Rebirth a chance...it couldn't redeem itself. But that's another review for another time.)

However, after a few space truckings, the game started to grow on me. The reason for this is that the game gave me a real sense of progression. The initial space trucking jobs that I started out with - yeah, they weren't fun at first, but they served two purposes:

1. They ease you into the simulation aspects of the game...kind of like a tutorial stage, but without the tutorial...if that makes sense.
2. The cash you can earn from space trucking allows you to buy lots of things that can get you into other aspects of the game, like combat for example. It's one of the more lucrative in-game revenue streams for a reason.

As soon as I realized this, I was hooked. With the cash I earned from space trucking, I got a combat-oriented ship and soon I was blasting fools out of the stars like I originally wanted to. A sandbox game with actual progression? Where you can genuinely define your own path instead of wandering aimlessly from one task to the next, like most sandbox games have you do? The fact that it took place in space was suddenly an afterthought to me. This is what Grand Theft Auto wanted to be if it ever went in a sci-fi direction.

Yes, the learning curve is steep. But the game actually does make an effort to teach you through its (optional) training missions accessible from the game's main menu. Many sandbox games just give you the basic controls and expect you to do all the work from there. But Elite: Dangerous? It not only gives you the tools to tell your own story, it teaches you how to use them.

The game's not perfect, and it's certainly not for everyone. If you're into instant gratification, you won't find it here (I know I can be that way sometimes), but it genuinely rewards you for playing - not just in in-game currency, but also with a sense of accomplishment.

I think as a result, this game should come with a warning label about how addictive it can be. I've sunk over 30 hours into it so far, and I know of many others who have sunk far more. A game like this can be dangerously fun.
