First up, this game is early access, so be aware of that.

Despite that, what IS on the plate (and there's a pretty damn hefty pile on said plate) is spectacular. There's a lot to love - the visuals, storytelling and writing, music, and gameplay.

Let's start with the visuals. Yes, it's pixel art, but it's damn impressive pixel art. It's all very cohesive, detailed, and just plain pleasing to the eye. The faux "mode 7" for the overworld is also a really nice touch that takes me back to the 16 and 32 bit eras.

The music is always fitting, never grating, and iconic as all get out. Some songs get stuck in your head. The sound design fits really well. Not everything sounds like chiptunes, beeps, and chirps, and I think that fits the style of the game well.

The writing and story have me engrossed so far. I'm curious to see this world unfold before me. The world-building seems to have been approached with a sense of passion not often seen by teams of developers, let alone one person. I have found myself sometimes confused by how characters speak, mostly because my brain trips over the accents and dialects given to the characters that's totally fitting for the world depicted in Savage: The Shard of Gosen.

Finally, we have the gameplay. Where to begin...? Imagine Castlevania: Symphony of the Night given an open world, quests, numerous characters to interact with, a crafting system, and random encounters on the overworld a la Zelda II. This game scratches not only an itch I didn't know I wanted scratched, but it does so fluidly. There's a lot to learn, but it's all so satisfying to take hold of.

I HIGHLY recommend Savage: The Shard of Gosen. I give it a Barbarian's penchant for smashing skulls out of 10.

This game is an absolute blast if you enjoyed similar games from the past (Double Dragon, River City Ransom, etc). With up to four players local or online, it makes for a great multiplayer game regardless of where you and your friends are. I only had a couple gripes for small parts where I'd get stuck and have to look up where to go because the game didn't properly communicate a doorway or what to do, but it was only about 2-3 times and the other gripe would be tedium for maybe two segments in the game. Overall, highly recommended. I played through with two different groups and we all had an amazing time.
