A great sequel that improves on a lot of aspects of Hollow Knight:
  • Platforming is way much better and is my personal favorite improvement. Everything seems slow at the start but gets exponentially faster as you get more traversal tools. The platforming is way more fluid and, if you are a fan of the original Hollow Knight, there are mini "Path of Pain" sections strewn across Pharloom to keep you on your toes.
  • The music by Larkin is so addicting. You get boss tracks that get you pumped (Strive, Trobbio, Lace, Karmelita, etc), soothing music to relax to (Bellhart, High Halls and surprisingly Bilewater) and tracks that just matches the feel of the areas (like the mysterious Mist and the somber music of the dilapidated Verdania). I could go on about a lot of the tracks but all you need to know is that everything sounds perfect.
  • Difficult enemies are available early on and that is something that I quite liked and surprised that it was seen as a negative by a few reviews when the game released. The main character has an entirely different moveset and some of the early enemies hit hard, but once you understand how to play Hornet, you'll notice she's much more mobile and the battles almost seems like a dance (literally for others) compared to Hollow Knight.

Summary: Get the game if you are a fan of platforming, difficult fights, exploration and metroidvanias in general. You won't be disappointed.

Also, if you want to read me gushing about what made this my personal GOTY:
I was a big fan of Ori and the Blind Forest's Ginso Tree escape and, after finishing that section , instantly made it one of the best games I've experienced. The Lava escape portion in Silksong gave me that same feeling, With a combination of the insane platforming, the skill checks with all your traversal tools and the Enter Pharloom soundtrack is just something unforgettable.

I went into this game thinking it was a Zelda clone, which might have made this game okay. But when the puzzle aspect of the game was revealed, I thought its easily one of the best and most immersive puzzle games I've seen.

Its hard to describe without giving away spoilers (And this game HAS to be played without spoilers), but basically even after hours of exploring and mastering the basic Zelda-like mechanics, the game will eventually reveal to the player already implemented mechanics many hours into your gameplay and its so mind-blowing how well these are revealed to you. A lot of the game is hidden but available to the player from the get go but these slow reveals is what truly makes this game fun and immersive. These discoveries really hits you as a player who's already explored a good chunk of the world and realize that there's more areas to discover and more puzzles to solve.

I'm writing this review after seeing the Steam Awards nominations and I'm actually surprised that this wasn't even nominated for "Most Innovative Gameplay" as it truly is that: Having a component of the game be the player's tutorial, guide, lore-book and a puzzle itself is a really creative way of merging story-telling and gameplay. What an experience this game was and I look forward to what the developers have in store for their future games.

If you love puzzle games, I highly recommend this.
