The most boring and vapid mh yet. Can we please kill open world games already, I'm tired of this trend that is actively ruining all franchises I care about.
Also fewer monsters than World on launch, and easier too. Make it make sense.

I would love to recommend this game, but failing to get the true ending because the game throws you into a complete genre-shift and expects you to just intuitively know that you're NOT SUPPOSED TO TOUCH THE SYMBOLS is HORRIFIC GAME DESIGN. I thought I was in a CUTSCENE. I am NOT going to play another SIX HOURS just to get back to ATTEMPT to get the true ending. The game was all fun until this INSANE point. I ended the game P*SSED OFF.

For the record, I loved ZeroRanger. Although it was EXTREMELY annoying to have to replay that game from the start if you failed at the very end, it was at least a shmup where the point of the game is to play it over and over again, and once you got good at it, getting to the end only took an hour or two. This is a PUZZLE game. I do not want to replay a puzzle game because I was caught off guard at the very, very, very, VERY last moment, especially when failing the previous genre-shift section actually DOES let you restart and try again.

Having multiple endings is fine. Having a conditional true ending is fine. But telling the player to go screw themselves because you catch them off guard with a completely different gameplay style, an unclear fail state, making it unclear that there even IS a fail state, is ridiculous. I mean, I thought I had to collect all the symbols before inserting my character into the heart, not avoid them. The statues that troll you to reset your run? That's funny, because you only have yourself to blame. Failing the true ending because you're not omniscient, wanted to play blind, and trusted the developer to not screw you over out of eight hours? I wish the game wouldn't have done this because I would've been able to recommend it otherwise, but I can't overstate how horrific of an ending this is to what I would assume is at least HALF the players who made it this far. What a perfect, final middle finger to the consumers. The only sense of longing I have is the affection and respect I lost for this game. I'm going to go play ZeroRanger.

Updated review: One year later. I cannot get this game out of my head. I decided to go back in and get the true ending. Knowing how to navigate the void, it was a simple task, but having to do this DIS rooms again was enough that I just looked up a guide for most of those. When I got to Bee, then Cif, then Lev, I made save backups at all points. I completed the final sequence, made my way to the center of the heart, and... nothing happened, then I died. So, I look up a video and see, okay, this person survived till the end, so I'll do that. I do that, and then... nothing happens and the end cutscene plays out like normal. Turns out! You need to PRESS Z. SO, I do it all. Over. AGAIN. And I press Z. Yippee. All in all, it took under 3 hours to accomplish, which isn't as long as my original rant made it out to be, but was still quite the trek through the void. I still enjoyed reminiscing on the floors I passed through on my way down, though.

The true ending REALLY should have been part of the normal ending experience. It gives closure to Lev's character and the arcs of both heroines, and gives the player a REALLY NEEDED catharsis to the overall experience. It is baffling that they decided to make this not only miss-able, but so needlessly frustrating for players who want to go this deep for the experience. I am looking forward to System Erasure's next game, but I really hope they decide to make the "true ending" of that game more of a bonus for collecting all 100 shiny sprinkles in Null Manger, the unique twist on the farming simulator genre.

Overall I really do love this game. I do recommend it. Going in blind without any expectations and discovering all of the wonderful, insane secrets that you can on your first playthrough is a remarkable experience. I sullied my playthrough with peeking at a guide here and there instead of just allowing myself to get lost in the game and that's an experience I can never have. I've bought this game for a few friends and I hope they can experience what I have not.

And I need to be honest. I do have that sense of longing. It aches. I can hear you. Thank you.

But none of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ next time, System Erasure! I'll be there.

The dungeons made me feel alive and the savage raid was the most fun I've had in a savage raid since Shadowbringers. Please make Wuk Lamat a cripple.

You have one job, holy moly. Keys are 255 refined and I can't even play the game without having a lobby full of bots. You're a joke, valve.

I don't think this is a bad game, in fact there's a lot about it I do like. But I don't think this is a great game, and it's certainly not deserving of being a "kamige". I wish I could give it a neutral review, but I'm not keen on just slapping a "Yes, I would recommend" and then telling you "Just go in blind bro it's worth it". This is a 40-50+ hour game with a massive slogpoint right in the middle of it. It's most certainly not for everyone, and unfortunately, too much of it didn't stick with me. I did see it through to the end, but that's because I expected it to somehow stick the landing, since subahibi is referred to as a "kamige" after all.

You may have heard that some "really f**ked up sh** happens in this vn bro!!!" I'm here to tell you that this is NOT a horror game, do not go into it expecting horror or grotesque stuff to happen. Bad things do happen but it's not horrorp*rn.

Without spoiling anything, I will say just this: if you're looking for a tightly written narrative that will change how you think about the world, you're not going to get that here. What you will get is potentially pretentious philosophical ramblings with an interesting story that is left ambiguous at the very end. After 100%ing the game, I'm not upset that I played it for 40 hours, but based on the legendary status this VN holds I'm left thinking "This is not a game I HAD to play in my lifetime". If you still think you'd want to play the game, go for it, but if you're on the fence don't sweat not being able to play it. If you do play it, don't let the nonsensical things hold you up; most of it will make sense by the end, and the stuff that doesn't the game pretends it's all part of the master plan anyways so don't bother fretting over it.

Also, yeah, Kimika is probably best girl. I love the Home Alone sh*t she pulls in that one route, probably my favorite route/ending in the whole game. Also, the OST is absolutely KILLER. Some of my favorite tracks are worst girl's theme "Tractatus Logico-philosophicus", "Mado to Hikari", and "Minareta Fu ukei".
