Beat Hazard 2 is a solid arcade style, twin stick shooter which embraces its roots, being one of the most over-the-top, retina burning game there is.

"EMBRACE THE SEIZURES"

Beat Hazard 2 is developed by a single person, Steve Hunt under his own publisher: Cold Beam Games. It is a game which builds on Beat Hazard's massive success, taking advice from its playerbase, with greatly improved graphics and feature sets. Every song will have a unique effect on the gameplay, spawning a large variety of enemies and generated bosses, as well as pumping up your attacks as the song reaches its peak. Each song also has its own leaderboards, with ACRCloud identifying your music on the fly providing unlimited replayability.

Pros
  • Open Mic
    The Open mic feature is possibly one of the best features added into the game. It allows for any sort of music source to be used with the game, allowing for a wide range of inputs. This includes: computer audio, line in and microphone input. Computer audio simply takes whatever your computer is playing and uses that in-game. This allows for the usage of various streaming services such as Youtube,Spotify or Tidal to be used with the game. Whatever your computer can play, the game can use.

  • The perk system
    The player will be limited to a certain number of perks which can be brought into the game. There are over 20 perks in the game which can be swapped. This allows for certain "builds" to be used per song in accordance to the player's playstyle. Don't need the extra lives? Disable that perk and enable a perk that will rain multipliers. Confident that you're able to dodge enemy ships? Enable the "dare devil" perk, which increases your multiplier when you aren't firing. This feature allows for a huge amount of customization, allowing players who are gearing for the top spot on the leaderboards multiple playstyles.

    There will be additional perks added in the future, something I am looking forward to.

  • Graphics
    There has been a huge overhaul of the game's graphics compared to its predecessor, with gorgeous looking lighting effects, including new explosion graphics. Every shot acts as an individual light source. With the amount of projectiles outputted by your ship, this will fill the entire screen with blistering, constantly flashing effects in accordance to the intensity of the music. This adds to the atmosphere of the game and really allows the player to immerse into the music. Visual intensity of the game can be selected before every song, with the player getting rewarded for cranking up the intensity. Maximum visual intensity has been increased from 200% in the previous game to 300%.

  • Individual song highscore charts
    Every song indentified by ACRCloud while playing with OpenMic will upload highscores to an online database, allowing players to compete with each other with the same song. Notifications will be sent to users who had their highscores beaten by other users. This further improves the replayability of individual songs and allows for friendly competition, forcing players to select perks that work well with the song.

  • Generated Bosses
    Bosses are now generated in accordance to the intensity of the song, spawning with a varying amount of turrets that are equipped with different weapons. These include tracking missiles, laser beams, ship spawners etc. This adds a whole new perspective for players who are into the boss rush mode.

    More boss variations will be added in the future, along with more boss types and weapons

  • Difficulties
    There exists a difficulty higher than suicidal now, namely "Apocalyptic". As a player who finds suicidal too easy, this is a very welcomed addition. Enemies spawn in much larger numbers and boss health has been greatly increased. I kinda wish that there is another step-up above Apocolypse though, as the verteran players are already getting used to the difficulty spike, with 1 hour standard mode playthroughs on the hardest difficulty becoming normal.

Cons
  • Interface
    The menu system looks like it's made in the 1990s, compared with current generation games. Changing controls require the player to go through every single button combination. The ability to change a single control option via a menu system would be great.

  • ACRCloud
    This is a feature that is used to identify songs being played. Its database is lackluster and small, resulting in large amounts of "unknowns". This is not the developer's fault, but there are much better song identification methods out there, including Shazam or Gracenote.

    Also, playlist players beware! If your first song is identified, your game will end once in accordance to the "end" of that particular song, cutting off all other songs in the playlist. This annoys me greatly as I prefer going for 1-2 hrs of non-stop gameplay in standard mode. This can be circumvented by playing a song which cannot be indentified first, then swapping to the playlist.

  • Crashes and rollbacks
    The game has crashed multiple times on me in the middle of a playthrough, rolling back my progress from the previous upgrade cycle in the meantime. This is extremely annoying as I've not only lost Chart-topping highscores but also upgrades and cash, which I've spent a good deal of time earning. I've personally tried running the game in compatibility mode as well as administrator mode, but it has little effect on the crashes. Turns out, OpenMic seems to be the result of many of these crashes.

    The developer is well aware of this and is patching out the problems.

  • Lack of ship customization
    With the release of Beat Hazard: Shadow Operations Unit 4 years prior which enabled the playerbase to customize and upload their own ships, along with workshop support, I was looking forward to seeing this feature in this base game, but was let down. The developer has listed this feature in both his Trello and steam store page as an upcoming feature so we'll have to wait and see.

  • No plans for online co-op mode
    Playing beat hazard with friends was one of the main reasons why I stuck with the previous game. It definitely is an experience to have 2 players blasting their way through insane amounts of enemies. I'm sure the community would very much like to see this feature added back into the base game. Perhaps even take it up a notch and have a "competitive" mode or 4 player co-op support.

    Local co-op has been added to the to-do list after feedback from the community.


Even with the various Early Access games which are completely abandoned by their respective developers, I have full confidence that this developer is very willing and capable of releasing the full version of this game. He has been extremely active on the various platforms of community.
