Finished this game the night before the remake was announced. Still buying it when it comes out. Lmfao

Despite the wonderful story, characters, and music, this game is EXTREMELY EXHAUSTING to complete. Without attempting to spoil anything, here are the biggest issues with this game:

- The amount of backtracking (you will be spending the majority of the game running to quest locations, sometimes even having to run from the SAME location to location multiple times)
- Dull and monotonous back-and-forth fetch side quests (some of which are unavoidable if you want to achieve one of the main endings)
- A lackluster fast travel system that makes completing everything ten times worse (once again, running everywhere) (you also unlock this pretty late in the game)
- A constant repetition of the game's storyline to achieve all the endings the game offers (the story is interesting up to the first ending, which then the game does a 180 and becomes an absolute grind fest where you have to complete the second half of the game TWO ADDITIONAL TIMES (where BARELY ANYTHING has changed except a few new cutscenes and dialogue) to get the very last ending with new content.
- Questionable optimization for PC (capped at 60fps unless you download a mod to fix the game (wtf Square Enix?), controller settings that often break out of nowhere and require a full game or even a full PC restart to fix)

Despite the negative experience I've had with gameplay, I can still recommend the story. It has definitely made me emotional at times and was quite interesting to discover some unanswered questions and theories of Automata. I actually believe it would've been way easier to understand by playing Automata first, but that's just my opinion. However, I will say that with the amount of repetition and backtracking that this game drills into you, the story gets old very quickly, which is seriously disappointing.

If you enjoyed Nier: Automata, please don't dive headfirst into this game thinking it'll be as equally entertaining gameplay-wise. You can obviously tell that this game is telling its age (despite being a remake). I would only recommend this to someone who is an absolute diehard Nier fan or someone willing to fight through the pain to enjoy the story. After completing the game in its entirety, I can safely say I will not be coming back to this for quite a long time.

If you're SERIOUSLY INSISTING on playing this, I would highly suggest downloading some ending save files on NexusMods to skip through the grind after reaching the first ending and watch the extra cutscenes that you'd miss out on YouTube. I think this is the best way to experience the game's full story from start to finish without getting exhausted.

This was peak. Graphics are a bit dated for today's standards but this game failed to disappoint me in any way. I enjoyed the combat system and boss fights were very fun. Dungeons felt a little monotonous (because it's the same system every time except for a few changes in some). The story, however, was wonderful. Probably a better friend group than the Phantom Thieves. Made me reconsider what my life really meant.
I would recommend this to anyone if they really enjoyed Persona 5 or Persona 3 and wanted another engaging story. Hell, I'd even recommend this to anyone who's never played a Persona game before.

I bought this game 9 days ago and this was the only thing I played for those 9 whole days. Everything about this game is just perfect; the story, music, combat/mechanics (which seemed very intimidating at first but became very familiar), how the characters are written, and even the little things like exploring Tokyo, confidants/social links, and other cool features. This was my first ever Persona/JRPG game and after finishing this, I can't wait to play the other games that this one followed.

I played this nonstop for two weeks straight so I'm suffering from major burnout/waiting for updates. But this game in its entirety is great and I'm super excited for what's to come.
Everything feels way more relaxed and friendly in contrast to Stardew Valley by avoiding annoying mechanics (like shop times, losing items after passing out, having to look everywhere for someone) and including some unique ones too.
Characters are very well written and have a lot of life to them. The game also does a good job in incorporating a sense of community with the player and makes you feel as if you're actually part of the group, which is nice.
Though do note that everything may seem extremely fast-paced. Time goes by quickly which makes it harder to do a lot of things in one day, but also helps the game progress to see growth with seasons, events and more action.
Overall, I'd recommend anyone to play this even while it's under Early Access. I think the excitement of knowing more is coming even with how much content this game has at this stage makes it even more fun to play through.

Before I begin, I played this on its normal difficulty.

This game is somewhat enjoyable, but there are a lot of factors that can make it feel very infuriating and exhausting. It all depends on what kind of player you are and whether you’re ready to invest some time to understand what’s going on.

To start, the game really doesn’t like it if you’re playing casually or for fun. If you take damage during a fight (or a verse), your score is penalized. Using healing or power-up items and dying also plays in to the score that you are given at the end of a chapter, which determines which award you receive. I have been given countless of stone awards because of these factors. Not that I minded after a while of playing, but it definitely gets annoying to see especially after trying really hard to get a good score in a certain chapter. Also, certain enemy types (such as Grace and Glory or Joy) can be seriously difficult to beat without certain weapons or techniques which could almost force you to die/take damage/heal. Some of the combos that you’ve learned while progressing could just become absolutely useless during a fight because they’re either too quick, don’t get staggered, or you’re overwhelmed by three of the same enemy type (like certain Joy fights which have led to unbelievably frustrating deaths). Be ready to fail, especially if it’s your first time playing.

Secondly, there’s a pretty sharp learning curve that builds up throughout the game despite it seeming awfully straight-forward at first. The game takes pride in its hack-and-slash mechanics, so you’ll have to learn a combination of moves and abilities to progress through fights. Button-mashing becomes useless after the first three or four chapters because it assumes you’ve already got the hang of it and know what you’re doing. As I’ve mentioned before, some fights can make some moves or abilities absolutely useless (like Wicked Weave or Witch Time combos against Gracious and Glorious because they’re not affected by them or don’t stagger in time for you to avoid taking damage). Personally I scumbagged my way through certain bosses because a single combo worked. I’m not proud of it, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Also do note that this game and many of its fans encourages you to replay it many times because “it’s more fun after you understand what’s going on”. That’s completely fine if you get invested in the story, but for a casual player, this just feels disappointing.

Also, don’t expect to understand the story when you begin. The game throws you right into the action with an awfully confusing introduction as you’re supposed to listen to the narrator talk while you’re fighting for your life on floating rocks and stuff. It’s like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time while also running away from a group of serial murderers. The story slowly builds on itself and makes more sense as you progress through the chapters and helps you understand why you even exist and what you’re fighting all these enemies for.

While I’m leaving a not recommended review, I always recommend that you use Steam’s two hour policy to your advantage and try it out for yourself. I think that’s plenty of time to make your own decision whether to continue playing or to look somewhere else. I would also recommend watching videos about the game and its later-chapter boss fights. Personally, because I don’t have great experience with fighting games, it took me longer to form my opinion.

The story is great and is well written, but the gameplay and its mechanics absolutely blow. You can tell that it's very dated because everything feels so clunky and horrible. I've died so many times during crucial fights because the controls didn't let me take cover or work which was seriously infuriating and made continuing this game feel like I was forcing myself to get it over with.

a lot of hate on the mask but it looks pretty dope in my opinion
