The great thing about this game, is you can really make it what you want. I'm not a fan of its laddy party vibe- but for me- that's easy enough to ignore for the most part. I just want to collect and tune my favourite cars and freeroam, enjoying the fantastic graphics. Despite that, the game offers lots of fun little challenges and races that I end up participating in. This game is so accessible, and I'm starting to find appeal in becoming a better racer at higher difficulties. I do feel overall it's quite bombarding with notifications and online play (I really just wish I could turn that off and set some default filters)... but it cool it offers such a variety of driving and racing options so everyone can enjoy it.

Note I'm really only reviewing this game based on a multiplayer experience, which is the reason I bought it. I'll also be comparing it to Nidhogg [1], which may seem irrelevant to anyone who hasn't played it. I also originally gave it a thumbs down based on terrible framerate and crashes. For now I've resolved that so changed my review.

I really wanted to love this game, and despite some of the other reviews here I really like the grotesque art style. I think it's a fitting succession from Nidhogg 1.

*Note on performance*
My main problem with this game is performance. I have a pretty decent PC that can run games like Witcher 3 with high specs, but for some reason this game is sluggish as hell, even on medium settings - which suprises me considering it's sprites. So I'm running it on low and only sometimes get framerate issues. I'll give the game benefit of the doubt and blame windows. The video above shows the game running smoothly, however that may be altered for the trailer?

On my 2017 Macbook pro it sometimes crashes with a fatal error! I know this is due to it opening windowed, but it seems out of my control when it comes to a fix. When it runs, it works well, although I still run into framerate issues on 'High' setting.
-----

While this game is a successor to Nidhogg [1], it feels like a step backwards and several areas. I'll start with spawning, it doesn't happen often enough, and when it does you will most find yourself on the wrong side of the screen (e.g. you'll be spawned left to a player who is running right). Ultimately you will find yourself waiting for your opponent to get to the next screen. This can be made worse with the random weapon generation, if you spawn with a bow, the odds are against you...

Speaking of, the addition of the bow, sword and dagger seem like great developments, however I feel they lack any design or weighting that benefits the game. I still find the sabre the most well rounded.

*Sabre*
Works great. Well rounded. No suprises.

*The Sword*
The sword is cool, it has stronger damage, and you can easily knock weapons out of opponents hands or kill them with a single strike. It's great, just like the sabre. Some say it's overpowered... but I've managed to successfully beat it with a sabre.

*The Bow*
The bow is slow to fire, and arrows can be reversed, meaning it has less benefit than throwing a sword, as you have more chance of ending up dead. Because of the slow fire rate, jumping and firing was either non-existent or extremely hard to utilize. In situations where both me and my opponent had a bow, it was a matter of either thowing it away and grabbing a knife or dying and waiting to respawn with something else. If the game is running slow, this weapon is pretty unbearable.

*Dagger*
This again seems like a useless addition, as it's short blade means you're likely to get skewered by a longer blade. I didn't see any advantage to throwing it or jumping and attacking. It's alright when you're fighting aother dagger, bow or melee opponent.

*Melee*
Still great, now with more kicking and stomping. I actually find this a bit better than the predecessor, as it seems more controlled and predictable

It's worth mentioning that all weapons can be turned on or off... so despte the bows disadvantages gainst other weapons, maybe you'll enjoy a game consisting of "bows only".

*Aesthetics*
The new levels and reimagining of old favourites are great. Again, I love the art style and these levels are visually STUNNING. It's so nice to have more variation.

So many people are saying they wont get this game based on the style, that I can't understand*. The original was lo-fi and quirky, but this one is really special. If you don't like tastefully drawn mutated skin, poo, anuses etc etc, then fine, avoid. To me it is incredibly fitting for the hellish landscape where you're racing to sacrifice yourself to the Nidhogg.

(* on the community page, someone is complaining this isn't appropriate for kids. Seems like a stupid argument given the cartoony nature, and plethora of other more violent games out there. On top of that, not all games need to be made with kids in mind.)

The levels have beautiful colouring, detail and animation. You can also customise the look of your character. No huge advantage, but nice if you don't like orange or yellow.

There's also a nice little addition to the HUD which shows who's got the advantage and which screen you're on.

As per the last game, the music is exceptional.

*Overall*
If you are having performance issues, try and persevere and lower settings. If you're on a crashing mac, update steam. I wouldn't recommend it over the original, but if you want something more, its great.

TLDR:

Pros
Great art style
Awesome level design and variety
Customisation is a nice touch
Great sound
Fun

Cons:
Bad performance in my case (tried mac and PC)
Pointless-ish weapon additions
Frustrating spawning
Not as tight as the original.

If you don't have Nidhogg 1, get that. If you need more, then maybe consider this.

Terrible interface and Sonic is running at a frame rate of about 5 frames a second. Uninstall. There are better free emulators available.

One of my favourite games. Art direction is amazing, great music and its super fun.
I'm actually terrible at this game, but that doesn't stop me trying.

There is one main problem with this game, and that is: it's not raved about enough! I bought this game a few months before even playing it, and somehow hadn't really heard about it.

This game is a work of art. It's exceptional, and since playing has already skyrocketed to my top 5 games of all time.

This game is stylised to perfection. It consistently blew my mind from chapter to chapter, and often had me wondering how my computer could render it so beautifully. I actually had to watch a video after to see how they did it. Amazing stuff.

This game will often be compared to Journey. Rightly so, it shares several similarities from its emotional story (told with hieroglyphics even), incredible soundtrack, similar art direction and is... a journey. But I still feel it's more than just 'Journey under the sea'... it's a lot more probing. I want to find out more about the story, and would happily have this on my computer all day, just for the view.

One thing, which I think prevented me jumping into this game straight away. I don't think screenshots or videos do it justice (it can give the impression it's an interactive screensaver). They look great and all, but there's nothing quite like playing it. It's so visually stunning, and controlling the camera for yourself is key to enjoying that.

Like Journey, the game takes about 3 hours to complete, but I still find myself going back there to hang out, find items or just enjoy the chill vibe.

So stop reading reviews, just buy it.

This is a lovely little game, that'll satisfy anyone who's keen on a bit of micromanagement. It can be a little challenging at first, but you soon find a stride. But I think that 'stride. isn't such a great thing.
When you do figure out how to maximise efficiency, the game sort of just exists. If you have natural disasters on, it may destroy your town and you can then figure out how to rebuild with three 70 year old men, or just start over, or just leave it there...
For that reason, I think this game is great if you an get it on special, but I would be hesitant to pay full price (£14.99 at time of review).
I read this game was created by one guy... if that's true then it's an incredible effort.

The game isn't bad, and I guess it says what it is in the description (30 minute experince). To be honest, I wish there was an inbetween to thumbs up and thumbs down.

The issue for me is, is there was no challenge. It was just completing a single task - jumping ono every platform. It seems like a missed opportunity. The most challenging patches to get to take about 30 seconds to figure out. There are pipes, lifts and jumps, but they all seem under utilised or pointless.

There are things to collect along the way, but no real reason for collectong them, I don't even know what they are.

The music didn't play for me, maybe that would've changed my opionion slightly...

At first I loved this game, and even gave it a positive review... but I found a few game breaking (online breaking) updates ruined that. Now, going back to it, the game is incredibly monotonous and slow paced. I feel like this game needed more love with developer updates, but maybe they just gave up?

Original review below.

Like Scott Pilgrim, this game has a pretty steep learning curve. It starts out pretty tough as you have no special skills, weapons or mods. But perservere; what may seem like a frustrating beginning (if you do find it tough) pays off in a huge way as you forge your own knives, build bizzare guns and blast your way through loads off brilliantly designed levels.
I play on a mac, and get the odd crash. I also wish the online was more user friendly. But get this game, it's worth every penny.

I think this is an example of a trend going too far. In my experience, Swords and Sourcery was the first of an indie game line up to use an obsure script, lovely art direction and slow-paced gameplay to execute an original, experiential game.

The idea of Continue? 0987654321, is kind of cool (A game character runnung around RAM)... but it seems to me like it's relying on the concept to appeal the indie fans, over content. The game feels uncrafted. The script is gibberish. Fighting (if you can call it that) is shallow and unsatisfying. The graphics at first seem cool, but quickly become dull, bland and uninspired.

Maybe they wanted to get it out the door faster. I think more time and more original ideas could've made this a sweet game. Iwant to like it. I want to want to play it more... but there are better games to spend my time on.

5/10
