Fast forward 20 years to 2018: The rift that opened 20 years ago caught the Combines radars and they also invaded Earth, enslaving them, and converting many of the humans into soldiers and other oddities. (The events of Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode 1, and Half-Life 2 Episode 2 then unfold)
On earth, a company called Black Mesa, a rival of Aperture Science, is working on a Portal technology which uses Xen crystals taken from Xen. Gordon Freeman, the proraganist, is a theoretical physicist working at Black Mesa, and there is an experiment about to go down with a new specimen (Xen crystal) except, this specimen is different. It is a more pure, yet potentially unstable crystal, delivered to Black Mesa from a person, or thing, known as the Gman, a character youll get to know as you play the games and look up Half-Life/Portal wikis. The test proceeds with the new specimen, and it goes horribly wrong, opening a rift between Xen and earth, releasing the Xenian beings and Vortigaunts into our world. (The events of Half-Life 1 then follow)

Alright heres the story in brief but still enough detail to give you enough info:
(this may not be accurate, as this is off of my mind, not a wiki)
An alien species known as Vortigaunts are living a happy life on their planet. War breaks out between them and an alien empire known as The Combine. The combine get their name from how they take over worlds. They extract all the resources from the planet, enslave any race that may exist there, and convert them into war machines if possible but *combining* their 'organic-ness' with their technology. The Vortigaunts escape The Combine by portaling to a place called Xen, a border world that exists between dimensions and acts as a bridge between universes.
