It's mainly an interactive story, so not a whole lot of actual game play, so it's primarily exploration within those confines. However, the world is well presented and keeps you interested in it, which makes it an enjoyable experience.

Although I only played the original XCom: UFO Defense a little bit (didn't even beat the game), I was excited to hear about this game. I very much enjoyed turn-based squad combat games of the past and was excited to purchase this game. In most aspects this game met my expectations, although there are a few "glitches" that can be frustrating.

The game has several frustrating bugs that can ruin your playing experience. I remember several times where I was attempting to move my units to a different level, only to have the camera spaz out and accidentally move my guys where I didn't want them to be. Also, sometimes you seemingly can't move to a valid location because the game will not register that you've moved up a level.

Not being able to direct your character's movements in a specific way really hurts this game. In the past XCom game, you could advance little-by-little instead of having to move in one big chunk. While I do agree that removing that from this game was the right decision, not being able to control how your guys get to their destination can prove deadly. Why would I want my guy to run blindly around cover or climb a building and then jump down again when he could have taken a much safe route to get to the same location? This has caused some frustrating deaths or inability to move my guys.

Also, the equipment management is not the easiest thing in the world to use. I've often found myself hunting down individual pieces of equipment from recovering soliders in order to outfit the squad I'm taking on my mission. It would be a lot easier if there was a global list of equipment we could assign rather than having to individually unequip items from soldiers not on the mission.

Although there are fan-made patches to solve some of these issues, the panic system is by far the most frustrating intended part of the game. I can recall several times where a squad member has, for some reason, paniced after someone took a grazing blow, shot his own squad member in the back of the head, which then proceeded to set off a chain reaction of panics and led to the entire squad suiciding after someone took a plasma blast to the arm. That's just frustrating game mechanics and doesn't really have a place here. I realize they were going for the squad panicing in a tough situation, and I know it's tied to will, but especially early on in the game, there's not a whole lot you can do about it. You certainly shouldn't have a good chance of your squad killing themselves at the slightest bit of panic. Hunkering down I can CERTAINLY understand, but all these random actions that they can perform is just ridiculous. It's a bad part of the old game and should have been done away with.

The overall graphical style of this game is excellent, the cut scenes are well played out, and I was actually surprised to note the impressive amount of depth they gave to uncovering what the aliens were actually doing on earth. As I played through it, I wanted to uncover more secrets to find out what exactly was happening with this invasion.

Recommended for anyone who like sci-fi, squad combat, turn-based, or casual gaming experiences.

Not recommended for those who like fast-paced games, don't like sci-fi, and are looking for detailed combat games.

I very much enjoyed the first installment of Bioshock and had stayed away upon hearing the cries of "meh" about this sequel. I'm ashamed to say that I missed out by waiting so long to purchase this game. This game likely suffers from high expectations from the first one. I'll admit that compared side to side that the original is likely a superior game from a storyline perspective, although not by much.

The combat was fun, especially with the drill charge (love that move), your character had believable motivation for what he was doing, the story was engaging and didn't have a meh twist like the original Bioshock. As a matter of fact, there really wasn't some "twist" or weird stuff with the story. Provided you listened to the diaries along the way, you got to see both sides of every character's story. Each story had two faces and you could plainly see the motivations for every character.

I recommend this highly if you enjoyed the original Bioshock.

A nice little game to play in short bursts. Very tongue-in-cheek with the whole roguelike genre.
