It intrigued me early on, but Quarantine Circular commits the cardinal sin of roleplaying - it forces you into a tiny box where all of your character's dialogue options are terrible, for no meaningful reason.

All of the characters are one-dimensional, as the game is too short for any of them to have motivations that feel realistic. But at the very least, the game could have left me with some sense of control over the actions of the characters I'm ostensibly meant to be playing. Instead, I had to spend two entire chapters as an entirely unrelatable character with dialogue options that ranged from ill-advised to just plain idiotic.

The jumping perspectives could have been a nice idea, I guess, but with a story so firmly on rails I just ended up feeling narrative dissonance between the version of a character that I was "playing," and the version of them on the other end of subsequent conversations.

After the first few conversations, I no longer felt like I had any meaningful control over the story. Another game might have at least intrigued me enough to want to play through it a second time to see other outcomes, but I just don't feel like putting myself through another two hours of this extremely slow-paced game.

It's an excellent point-and-click specimen; on the easier side, but still fun and occasionally challenging. The story is clever and well-told, with twists and turns that I absolutely did not see coming.

But the characters, my goodness, the characters. So fully-realized, so easy to fall in love with. From the moment you meet each of these people, you have a good sense of who they are and what they're about. The first time meeting KayKay might be my favorite character introduction in any game. Rarely have I found myself so invested in a group of people so quickly.

But they're also so much deeper than they seem at first blush! There's a great arc in one of the later missions where each of the party members you bring with you is forced to confront their deepest personal demons, and one character's resolution of that nearly moved me to tears (it was Eli, if anyone's wondering). Top-notch writing, delivered by top-notch voice acting.

My biggest complaint is that I wanted more. I wish there were more missions; at the very least, I wish I could switch party members mid-mission to solve different challenges, or to get a particular character's take on a situation. I appreciate that the levels are designed such that any party combination can solve them, but I actually wish it wasn't, and you had to come back later with someone better-equipped to handle the situation.

Overall, though, one of the best games I played this year.

I wanted to like this game, I really did.

The art is beautiful, between that and the sound design I was drawn in from the first few seconds. And the subtitle "A Sci-Fi Romance Adventure" intrigued me.

But as far as I can tell after playing the first few missions, the title is a misnomer. There's no romance to be found, as far as I can tell, and if there's any at all it's only the most superficial "gamified" type of romance.

My first few interactions with the holo-people left me completely baffled as to what I was supposed to be doing and why. One bookish character asked me if I read much; I responded "sometimes" instead of "voraciously," because I tend to answer those sorts of questions honestly on my first playthrough of any RPG. She turned her face down, there was a little buzzer sound effect, and I felt like I had gotten dinged by the game for making a bad choice.

Subsequently the AI told me that the more I "connect with" these people, the more effectively they'll work on solving my problem. Am I supposed to manipulate these people? Tell them exactly what they want to hear? Is the "romance" in getting them to love me, so they'll work harder for me? It struck me as shallow, ghoulish even, and not at all the sort of thing I'd hope for from a game that bills itself as a "sci-fi romance adventure."

Not to mention, the characters are not particularly interesting or well-developed. Or at least, the conversations are so short that I don't get the sense I've made any sort of connection with a fully-realized person. Since that's ostensibly the point of the game, it's a really disheartening sign.

If I was disheartened by my conversations with the holo-people, the rest of the game didn't help. The mission gameplay is almost impressively boring; Steam says I played for 76 minutes, and I could have sworn it was at least twice that. Even if I wanted to talk more with a particular character in order to develop some kind of connection with them, the pacing of the game so far promises at least 30-40 minutes of tedious walking around before I can get to that point.

I just can't justify spending any more time on this game than I already have.

Genuinely one of the best games - if not the best - I've ever played.

Everything about The Outer Wilds primes you to feel curious. It makes you want to go explore just for the sake of exploring, to discover for the sake of discovery - and do so joyfully, not fearfully. It's a model for how space exploration should make us feel. It makes me want to fling myself out into the stars, see the sights, meet kindred spirits, and learn together.

As for the design, it's an out-and-out masterpiece. The Outer Wilds should be part of every game design curriculum from now on. Not only are the various planets and environments beautiful and diverse, they're awe-inspiring.

The best thing about the Outer Wilds is that it's never some artifact or some new power-up that gets you past obstacles - the key is always knowledge. The solution to every puzzle is always something you could have done from the beginning, but which you didn't know how to do, or never would have thought to. I cannot overstate how ecstatic it feels to find some ancient piece of writing that hints at the answer to a puzzle on a completely different planet, your eyes go wide, you sit up and shout "OHHHH!" and you race to board your ship.

All told, from the moment my character first woke up under the stars to the moment I solved the final mystery was the most satisfying journey I've ever taken in a game.

One of the most adorable and wholesome games I've ever played. Everything is procedurally-animated, so the bumbling little player-robot has a real goofy walk and the physics make everything sort of bobble around this beautiful landscape filled with alien megaflora. Cute, meditative, and fun.

This game is a religious experience. It has to be played to be believed. It made me laugh, it brought me to tears, it made me feel like I was communing with something vast and incomprehensible.
