Sooo... I'm building a Borg ship, what are you doing?

It's a builder game. You build stuff. Build. B, U, I, L, D. Like, that's the game. That is the point of this game. Even more so, the early release state is in creative mode ONLY, with hardly any functioning blocks, mostly place holders and only few building blocks available, for now. This is what we were promised and this is what we got. Updates will roll out down the line.

Is it worth the money?

If you want to build things, yes, yes it is. Smooth, functional, easy building already despite it's all bare bones alpha still. Highly recommended for creative folks who like to design stuff and play around with things like 3D CAD

If you want a story mode, enemies, rpg, co-op, linear stuff, all the quality of life tweaks already in, everything served readily chewed up, not having to figure out how to make things work, then no, no it's not. Right now there is nothing for you here. Go play games that promise you those and check out how this is doing in few months. Or years. Or, you know, never.

I really wanted to like this game, but at it's current state I just can't. It seems to have all the right elements for me, but the supply chain system quickly frustrates the heebie jeebies out of me.

You are constantly lacking something, which would be fine, but as everything affects everything in this highly complex supply and demand structure, every change you make causes you to lack something else instead, and it is just a never ending cycle of trying to squeeze little bit more production in some corner while simultaneously running out of space and something else in another corner. You cannot ignore it either, cause it comes with immediate money penalty, as it's dealt with nonobligatory "buying outside with extreme costs" instead of just, you know, no more people moving in, so you are inherently forced to fix it quickly, or risk running out of money.

You cannot plan beforehand, as you never know how much you will end up needing something or what are the next demands, and the lack of range of the basic suppliers force you to add more and more supply posts which make you again run out of workers, or yaks, as some of their requirements are also dynamic based on distance, so you add those which makes you run out of food and commodities so you add those too and whoops not in range anymore add more suppliers, but there's no more correct shape space close by, and also no more workers of another type which require more of different type of food and commodities you don't have so your money is running out now - you see where I'm going with this??

..And just when you think you got everything somewhat balanced and met the current demands - hey, the avalanches are now twice as strong, surprise surprise, and the defenses you built a city around can't hold it back anymore - go redo all of it! Frustrating

Also when you are constantly running out of space, delivery range and the produce, not being able to rotate buildings which come in all shapes and sizes, it makes it even that much more frustrating. You play this weird tetris of static mismatched blocks to keep everything in correct range of each other while not wasting space and not knowing how many of those you will still need to build.

I've started and quit after half an hour now like 7 times, which is not how I usually play anything. Maybe it becomes nicer once you have established all the variables and got an idea how big industry clusters you are gonna need, but I'm starting to think my tolerance of frustration will be met before that. I'm just not enjoying the core mechanic here

Things that I really enjoy about this game:

- the hauntingly soothing beautiful soundscape
- the exploring and treasure finding, all of the mysteries
- plethora of different surprising modifiers and "surprise cards" making games interesting
- city building and planning
- overall visual style
- progressing your skill sets
- strategic unique aspects against the time challenge
- unique modified rogue lite take on strategic city builder theme (not a true city builder, mind you!!)
- frequent updates and improving of the game
- virtually bug free
- very decently priced

Things I don't enjoy that much in this game

- the cycle that destroys your outposts
- forever starting over
- the shortness of the cycle; the big map play seems useless cause there is no time to really achieve anything
- improving your outpost is useless after you win the timer

Overall consensus:
10/10 would buy and play again and loose myself in the sorrowful misty forests

oh my frigging god. Emotional damage. Here I was, thinking I picked another fun lighthearted survival crafter, you know, build a hut out of sticks, defend it, make some nifty tools out of rocks and wood until you get bored - and now I'm on my knees, crying and begging forgiveness ;_; The story mode was NOT what I expected, and it just keeps getting deeper and deeper and with heavier themes as you progress. Nothing is as you thought it was, it sure is a green hell, but way differently than you could have ever imagined.

Do like me, jump in blind and make a run for it.

Gameplay wise there are a lot of bugs, be prepared. Half the time when I start the game I get a display settings error message but it affects nothing, really. Once it crashed my GPU driver. I did have to do some reloading few times when the world went really wonky, but luckily everything sorted itself out eventually (change zones too, it helps the game to reset things), and without having to roll back on saves. A lot of weird things happened over all but nothing truly game breaking. It does fit the theme though, in a sort of "Am I loosing it here.. Wait, right, I am", lol.
Lot of mechanics are also not very polished, for example the changes in sound volumes from certain actions do my head in despite all the available settings and no matter how much I try to fiddle with them.

Still, no way would I miss this. I hope they continue to polish things up to make it a truly great game. If not, oh well, still got my moneys worth, can't remember last time a game made my skin crawl so well! (and also got to built a really nifty tree fortress while at it, yay ^^)

Turns into a total snooze fest after you've done with all the expansions and character unlocking. No replayability.

All the characters are very one dimensional and fall in love with you no matter what you do, I guess I could keep on pushing for all achievements, unlock all bag space & dating all the characters but I see zero point in it. Frankly they are all boring. Character collections are pointless, gene splicing is pointless, maxing out all relationships is pointless after you've done with the unlocks.. Mostly I literally just slept through every day to keep progressing the family story line, and then it just... stops

edit. updating my review. It's almost year in and I haven't seen actual content added, more like cosmetic stuff and quality of life updates which is really not what they should be concentrated on at this point. I'll change the rating if things start to improve, but right now it is not worth the money. Get it if you think you can sink hours and hours into building your airship, but I personally think there are better builder games out there if that is what you want to do. As said in the original text the premise is fantastic and I really hope they do continue building the world & progress the story. .edit end.

I am _so_ invested in this game. It's barely out and not that much content yet, and I just cannot wait for the next update to drop! I knew from the demo already I would just love, love this, and since then they even made the hunger/thirst part less tedious and more like part of your routine. Obviously it needs polishing, duh, it's EA, so those things are overlooked right now. The engine is quite power hungry and it made my fresh gaming pc fire up it's fans on high speed, fiddling with environment settings might bring some relief to this (since you live in a constant particle bombardment), and inventory management turned out quite tedious, but afaik developers are already on it.

The world is daunting in it's harsh extreme apocalyptic magnificence, strange phenomenons and curious developments. Expanding your airship is lovely and functional and the whole concept is just fresh and exciting. If you loved Subnautica, you will adore this, it has lot of the same energy, but up in the stormy skies instead of deep murky waters. Obviously with it's own quirks and twists, for the mechanics certainly aren't identical. 10 out of 10 for this fresh Early Access release, keep it up Far From Home!

So I have had this game for 2½ years. It was utterly unplayable in the beginning, with horridly broken pathfinder, ridden with game breaking bugs and most clunky ugly interface. Literally one of the worst games I have ever tried - even with strongly considering it was very early, early EA.

People are still writing the same things today. That's almost after 3 years of release to EA and despite seemingly active devs.

Really cannot recommend this.

edit. I'm updating my review after 3 years, because, Hot damn. I came back to this after a long break and whoop, another week just disappeared and I've been living off bananas last two days.
This game has received constant updates past years and it has only got better. Building the infernal machine is now even more fluid than before, and I am pleased to note my skills of former messy spaghetti cities have now evolved into smoothly flowing functional spaghetti cities, and the infernal machine keeps tirelessly crunching even if I leave the star system.

It is still ridiculously beautiful and mesmerizing factory game in grand epic space setting, if that's on your alley, get it. Get it now. You won't be disappointed. Edit end.


Man, I'm only starting up and haven't left the first star system yet, but enjoying it incredibly already.

Classic build, craft & expand - galactic epic style. Oh boy.

Spaceflight is superb, took a moment to get hang of it, but now I set the speed & direction, active the cruise control and just marvel at the beauty of the universe. Can't remember last time I took so many screenshots within 2 days. This game is seriously beautiful.

I honestly donno what are these people crying here about bad language. I have zero problems with it and seems very fluent to me despite explaining quite complex systems. So don't be swayed thinking it's painfully bad English translation. It's not.

Yeah there's lot of optimizing still to do, quality of life stuff, not everything is implemented yet, bugs n stuff yada yada, but hey. It's frigging early access, released less than a week ago - and surprisingly good state for that already. Good things come to those who wait.

If the development team keeps this up it's gonna be one grand thing of beaut, but in the current state even if they abandoned it this very moment it's still worth the cost.

I ... can't believe they just added yet another big content patch.. O_O

After having this game 4 years and periodically coming back to it when I need a bit more chilled and relaxed gaming (opposed to my normal hectic survivals, fps and mad base builders), I feel practically guilty for getting again a free treat out of it. I want to show my sincere support for this amazing developer who just keeps working on a released top popular game, yet demands nothing from us in return. If I find out a new project they are starting I will be sure to back it up.

This game is like a combination of cute visual novel with touch of retro graphics, farming game, dating sim, exploring, questing and dungeon crawler with some rpg & crafting elements. So there are lot of entertaining aspects and different ways to play it, but overall it has quite a calm, easy and gentle atmosphere with lot of delightful music. It's mostly up to the player what they want to concentrate on.

Virtually bug&glitch free (at least I haven't encountered a single one in all of my playtime) with clear simple functionality. Co-op was added later too and afaik furthermore enhanced in the latest patch. If I had to criticize anything it's the combat aspect which is not that refined and can get a bit frustrating. Dungeon crawling however is no way required or forced on, yet for those craving more action and challenge them parts do get quite difficult and hectic. Procuring the rarest materials for most high end items is just difficult and very slow without going to fight some monsters.

It's not the usual game I play, yet I love it to bits.
