I'm not huge on sandbox games like this, but decided to check it out.

Three hours in, I was thinking it was kind of slow.
Eighteen hours in, I had no clue where the past 15 hours had gone.

Both the depth of the game and the enjoyment have been snowballing. It's a good game both in hours-long sessions and in short bursts. I can't say if you'll like this if you like ARK: Survival Evolved, but if you liked Pokemon 15-25 years ago but have grown tired of the lack of quality and such little change in the Pokemon games, and want something vastly different but manages to capture enough of that Pokemon spirit, I'd give this a glance or two.

A very fun pro wrestling booking game. A ton of user-created content over the years, easy to hop right into a game or get as sandbox-y and customized as you like. I call Journey of Wrestling a booking "game," rather than a booking "sim" as I would for TEW, EWR, PWS, etc. - not because it's lacking in-depth or isn't fun, but it's designed in a way that feels closer to something like SvR06-07's GM Mode on some mega roids. A lot easier to pick up & play for shorter periods of time than having to dedicate some time to sit down and really fill out a card in a booking sim.

Well worth the price tag if you like GM Modes or if you like fantasy booking, but not necessarily about micromanaging a ton of numbers.
(Ignore low Steam playtime; played in-browser for years prior.)

Amazing game. HORRENDOUS port. I've owned this on PC for a decade and I've not once been able to go more than 10 minutes without crashing. Across several computers, several versions of Windows, several mod setups(or without any mods), this has always been worse than Arkham Knight on PC on release day.

This will be most playable on X360. PS3 has worse performance, but it's at least stable, and gets you the Director's Cut content. Even the Switch version, as bad as it is, at least is still technically playable. This version is not. Even running those console versions on your PC will be a better experience.

A very fun psychological horror game. It's far less like Doki Doki Literature Club, in my opinion, than many people say; I'd equate it closer to Pony Island. Regardless, if you're a fan of either of those, this is right up your alley.

The gameplay and presentation is a great throwback to the early 80s - has an Intellivision feel for the most part to me, with the voice clips even sounding like the Intellivision voice synth module - but the real shine is in the story and the attention to detail. The animations are insanely good, and while the game is pretty easy(for the most part), I'd still say it's worth it at even full price. It's enjoyable enough to 100% each chapter once and feel you've gotten your money's worth.

I'm horrible at fighting games. MvC2 was the fighting game that actually got me to do more than mash buttons as a kid. The games in this collection feel like they have an extremely low barrier to entry, relative to a lot of fighting games, but still get really deep. Some glitches from the arcade releases aren't present, but it's a pretty damn close port for each game. Highly recommend.

Great visual novel. Got me into the genre over a decade ago, glad to see it finally on Steam.

The VN itself is actually very well-written. The characters are very believable, with even the imperfections in their personalities being subtle, yet effective. The disabilities of the characters are presented rather tastefully, with the characters themselves presented, in a tasteful sense, as human beings that happened to have a disability, rather than being a living disability that happens to look like a human. Some routes are better than others, some endings are good while some are kind of "eh," but all in all, it's a great VN.

Do you like DDLC, The Stanley Parable, Andy's Apple Farm, or any other indie game that you can't recommend without spoiling the game? Then you'll probably enjoy Pony Island.

Update: January 12, 2024: After progressing more in this, as well as putting some time into RS3 and some more popular idle games, I'd like to revise my review to be a "would recommend." I still don't find it to be a great game, but it DOES become more interesting than just an idle game when you've increased skills significantly and start to get a bunch of synergies between them. The mastery system, on top of the skill levels themselves, is an interesting twist, in comparison to RS3 or OSRS. I'd still definitely rather play OSRS than Melvor Idle, and, depending on if I'm playing with friends, possibly RS3, but Melvor Idle is an alright game, especially at its price point.

I'll leave original review from January 2, 2024 below, for full transparency on my thoughts.

To preface: I don't think this is a "bad" game on its own. It's fine enough.

That having been said, as someone who has played idle games in limited capacity, but played a massive amount of Runescape around 20 years ago, and a good amount of OSRS(with a little bit of RS3) a couple years ago, this game is in a very weird spot. Some skills are completely fine idle, while other skills require more attention than actual Runescape. If you don't, you can either run out of mats for crafting, leaving you sitting doing nothing, or if you try to idle in combat or thieving, you can die and either lose a piece of gear or, if you're on hardcore, lose your character. (Though if you're playing hardcore, you're probably the type to be paying more attention as it is.)

It also incentivizes checking back in at least once an hour as your town updates to manage, along with however long it takes for crops, herbs, and trees you're growing with farming takes. With all this mixed together, it's not great as an "idle" game. It's closer to a "second-screen" game like OSRS, though it feels like it takes more attention than OSRS. At that point, you may as well just play OSRS or even RS3.

If you want an idle game, I would suggest something that asks for your attention less. If you want a second-screen experience, I would suggest just going with actual Runescape. The game isn't a terrible purchase, but I often just feel like if I'm giving as much attention to this game, I may as well just play OSRS, so it's hard to recommend.

The only game I've played where I can be a five year old who runs around a school, punches people in the crotch, sets guitars on fire, and will be choked out repeatedly by teachers - and later they will try to run me over with motorcycles - and still get off scot-free.

It's pretty metal.
