really though, this was a good game. i did not expect it would go where it went, even after seeing some spoilers online. well done.

This game has a special place in my heart. On steam I've (at the time of writing this) played just over 200 hours, but I played it for about 4 years before I realized it was on steam and got it here. My favorite MMORPG of all time, partly because I've been playing it with my brother for over half a decade, and partly because I'm a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings.
The community is very fun and helpful, which is saying something for a game that's been around so long with so many different people playing (and saying something just for MMOs in general). The devs are in contact with the players still after all these years, have released about 20 major updates and countless patches and small updates (the latter of which come out consistently every few weeks).
Overall a fun game with a great community that helps you to come back over and over. In the years I've played this I think I've spent more time in this game than any other I've played (except maybe the older pokemon games, but I'm not sure if those count because I could bring those with me everywhere).

long story short:
Hellblade is a fun game with good gameplay and an intriguing storyline. Well worth the money if you like games that make you think, but maybe not if you're looking for a game to sink some long hours into. (Note: I only spent ~$24 on this when it was on sale around Halloween)

long story not-as-short, but not long:
it's hard to objectively measure if this is a "good game" because there's a lot of factors that some will like and others won't. A quick list:
+ Compelling storyline. Despite getting stuck on a few of the puzzles, I never felt like I needed to take a break, I wanted to keep playing through the end. This may have also been, in part, because I knew the game was fairly short.
+ Great animation. Especially after watching some behind the scenes footage, I've really grown to appreciate the facial expressions of the characters and the other visual effects.
+ Good puzzles. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the puzzles this game threw at me. I did not include that under a blanket "good gameplay" tag though; I'll get to why in a minute.
+ Innovative. No part of the game in and of itself was a new concept (except maybe the binaural delusion-voices; I don't think I've seen that anywhere before), but it created a unique experience when they were all put together to explore the complicated mental illness of psychosis.
- Short. If you are someone who follows the "1-hour-for-1-dollar" rule, that may be an instant turn off. I'm typically slow at this sort of game, and it only took me about 11 hours to finish the game and get all of the lorestones. Expect 8-10 hours, depending on how fast you play.
- Boring battle mechanics. Once you get the timing down for individual enemies' attacks, they get very predictable. This is why I didn't say the gameplay as a whole was good. I only lost against 1 of the bosses, and the only time I died in normal battles was because I was an idiot and got myself surrounded. It's worth noting, though, that the battles aren't a very significant part of the game so that doesn't detract too much from it as a whole.

Overall, a strong 8/10 to light 9/10 imo. Frankly I've not played many games that just came out this year, but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is my GOTY so far. Feel free to make a decision on whether to purchase this for yourself based on the above points, but for my personal preferences I thought it did well just about everything that was important for this game, and the few things that were sub-par weren't so awful that I couldn't mostly look past them. The main detractors were price vs playtime and the combat system.

This is my favorite game ever, and I don't like rpg turn-based-combat games, nor sidescrollers (generally), but LISA: the Painful is so much more than that.
The game takes around 6-7 hours to beat on one playthrough. I've played for over 50. You do the maths.
brilliant story, funny jokes, hidden bosses, lots of hidden endings, the whole shabang. You must play LISA: the Joyful once you complete this.

top 5 best games ever imho
fun gameplay + compelling story = great game
certainly not the best story of the MGS games, though, but the gameplay mostly makes up for it in my opinion. It's the best gameplay of the series hands down (except for boss fights, because some of those really sucked and you can't beat Snake Eater in that).

only 9.9/10 though, because I've just done mission 45 again recently
