I’m confused as to how I should communicate with POC so they know I am a friendly ally. I want them to know that I’m not a threat and I support their culture (rap music etc). It’s possible this person was just traumatized from other racist white people (police probably) and their response didn’t have anything to do with what I was saying.

If anyone could shed some light on this subject, I’d appreciate it, thanks!

Should I speak to POC like they speak to each other?

Hello Reddit friends, I have a rather uncomfortable question to ask you guys.. as an ally, should I speak to POC (persons of color) using the slang they use to talk to each other? The other day at my favorite coffee shop, an African American POC cut in front of me in line, I was gonna say “excuse me” but I thought that sounded too white. Instead I said “aye bruh why you be cutting!”. He stared at me with a perplexed look, and then said “n word shut the F up!”. We then stood in line awkwardly and put in orders, before I quickly shuffled out of the door, feeling like I had said something offensive..
