I just want to relax after work and play my single-player NBA franchise and career modes. Instead, I pay 60 dollars for a gameplay loop where the major design goal is to frustrate me enough to pay even more cash to skip it.

This game will be both horrifically reviewed and wildly profitable. Just like the one before it and just like the one after it. At least I won't be contributing to that anymore.

Incredible artwork. Awesome soundtrack. And a great gaming experience.

The other reviews are right. There's about 5 hours of gameplay here. Once you've kind of figured out it all works, that's about it. But figuring it all out is a fantastic experience. And the game ends right when it should and won't waste your time.

And then...there's the unbelievable bit. I bought this on sale for $2! I mean, holy crap. Eat a banana, or play this game - they cost the same price.

This game is highly worth your time and your loose change, and I'll be keeping an eye on this Pierre Vandermaesen guy since he delivered an absolute gem here.

Edit: The additional content and ascension modes add a lot of replayability and self-tuning difficulty balance that was missing at launch. I fully recommend picking up this game.

It's a fun, clever little game! It was fun to explore within the game a bit and learn in real time how the different buildings work and what the different ambitions mean, and then go back and conquer the scenarios again in double time with that acquired knowledge.

The overall content is limited right now. I played two extended runs of the demo before buying the game, unlocking as much as I could to learn about the mechanics. Once I had the game, I beat all six scenarios in 57 minutes. That wasn't me particularly trying to rush things - it's just fairly easy once you know what you are doing. Overall, I probably played for about 3 hours.

If I had purchased the game blindly, the lack of depth may have been an issue. But the demo is a pretty significant part of the game, and the dev is outright calling that the "F2P" version in the launch notes. I can't complain with interesting content that is free and without ads. As it turns out, I enjoyed it enough that I was happy to pay the price of a beer to play around for another hour or so.

TLDR - at least go play the demo, it's free and worthwhile.

This game is a well-wrapped present that turns out to be an empty box.

The ban & pick is the only worthwhile gameplay element, but it is quickly solved. A working solution is found in the first few matches of the season. The rest of the time is just grinding out wins, one unskippable battle at a time.

Patches (periodic semi-random adjustments to the strength of each champion) are an interesting mechanic. But they are currently the only thing that forces any meaningful response in gameplay. They happen far too infrequently to serve that role. The few other management features range from shallow and random (training) to useless and annoying (mid game pep talks).

I play sports management games regularly and will spend several delightfully agonizing hours at a time trying to find the perfect players to draft and sign and trade. Here, you just hit a 'recruit' button, wait a week or four, and up pops a completely random player. Take it or leave it. And you might as well always take it, because the specifics barely matter anyway.

I love the concept. Sadly, after six hours, it is clear the complexity and fun just isn't there.

So when you get to level 60 in this game, the best thing to do is do mind-numbing, run-from-A-to-B quests over and over again to get faction tokens, so you can buy a good level 60 gearset. This is critical because getting even better gear requires you to have a minimum gear score, and the faction set gives you a huge boost. This process can take 10-20 hours just by itself.

But when I got to 60, I got a bug, that capped the number of tokens I could get to a number juuust below what was required to purchase the major items for this gearset. According to the forums, hundreds of people have this bug. Amazon cannot fix it. They tried to patch it yesterday, and apparently failed.

So, I grinded over a hundred hours to get to level 60, several more to run up these tokens...and I cannot actually access the payout.

This...is a microcosm of this game. This is why you see people with hundreds upon hundreds of hours leaving a negative review. Because this game is, in every single part, a repetitive slog of a grind that gets slower and slower and slower towards the end. And people push through it expecting some big payoff...but whether from a bug, or some game design oversight, or just a general lack of variety of content, the payoff always seems to disappoint.

And yet, I'll probably keep playing. It is the same thought that has doomed many over the centuries - that if I have gone this far, I might as well try to see it through. There is just enough interesting PVP events and just enough daily banter with the company I've been grinding with, to make it worth grinding just a bit more, so I can get a few more kills in a few more wars...

But was it worth it to get here? Absolutely not. If you are reading this and have not yet started this game...don't.

Great chassis for a game.

The core gameplay loop is very engaging. You are on a race against running out of food and energy. There are high-tech solutions that make that easier but you need to move fast to get the resources. But moving fast opens up harder challenges, which require other high-tech solutions to solve. The timing is pretty established - most things become available just as you start to desperately need it. The planning of the perfect ship layout to help with this race is potentially quite addicting.

...at least up to a certain point. Then you stabilize and there isn't much challenge or variety and the pace starts to feel very slow. But, I assume that's why it's an alpha. The opportunity to introduce all the variety of Rimworld and FTL events, disasters, and combat challenges are there, just not utilized yet.

One disappointment is that the characters don't really stand out from each other. Other than maybe research, everyone is just kind of a warm body that can do a little bit of everything. Having someone good at construction or industry really makes no difference when the limitation is always just having the resources. There is some social and health status stuff but I never noticed any actual impact of it with 20 hours on hard.

Also, the setting feels very generic. There are data logs I guess but the one or two I read did not seem like a well-written story and there is zero plot immersion beyond that right now. So, while the mechanics are strong, the game does lack personality at the moment. But it is certainly easier to add a compelling story to a working gameplay concept than the reverse.

In the best of worlds, this ambitious game lives up to the combined potential of epic colony builder AND rougelike space sim and can be one of the finest games out there. But this is a large canvas to fill, and it might never quite find its identity with either and be...okay. Long way to go but if you don't mind early access games, it certainly has my interest, and ought to have yours as well.

Like many others, I have been waiting for a good successor to SimGolf for many years. This game not only accomplishes that with a solid golf tycoon chassis, but introduces creative new ideas that pushes the concept even further. It's early access and thus a bit light on content, but the gameplay is rock-solid. All in all, the game is well worth the pricetag already, and with a solo developer that really cares about making a quality game, I look forward to seeing it get even better.

If you do play and are expecting a SimGolf clone, be prepared to change your mindset a bit. I tried building a traditional golf course in my first go with a few futuristic gimmicks on top, and balance everything just right, and hit a wall after 5-6 holes. But then I put the game away for a while and came back, scrapped everything, and built my next 18 holes by really embracing the pinball/minigolf mindset, and just building whatever unfiltered ideas came to my head and not caring if they fit in perfect traditional par 3/4/5 golf design. Had a lot of fun that way and that is where the game really shines. But, if you do want to build traditional golf, that's possible too, and I believe the developer is planning to introduce game modes or scenarios that allow for both styles.
