Just Cause 3 is great if you love Bollywood style action, a lot of freedom, and the ability to be creative with your explosions. I've sunk a lot of time into this game, roughly about 20 hours by my estimate (it's all been offline, more about that later) and I always find myself starting this game with another idea for something stupid to try. Like take a boat down a mountain and feel like you're in cool runnings, or try and build a catapult using the tether and some cars.

The game is fun to explore, the movement system feels great, especially the wingsuit. The game is massive, and scaled appropriately to how fast you're going to be travelling most of the time. You could argue that the world is a little empty compared to some other modern sandboxes, but I think 'Spread out' is a better term. There's a lot to see in Just Cause 3, and if you find yourself driving a car at 200 km/h in a random direction, you're not ever going to have to backpedal to find something to do when you inevitably crash. The game is spread out in a way that you're constantly going "ooh what's that on the horizon?"

Performance-wise, I have trouble with v-sync only. Everything else runs like a dream, and that's with a GTX 960. I get almost constant 60fps, with the occasional stutter, though it's very rare. I'm always suprised at how well the engine deals with having hundreds of physics objects hurtling around at once.

The story is there. It's funny in places, with some cool scripted missions. But all of the scripted missions do have the option to put your own flair onto them, nothing is set in stone. You need to blow something up? How you do it is generally up to you.

The side missions are sometimes dull, sometimes excellent. The flying and boating eventually get very samey. Especially since you're always in one of the small selection of planes/boats that appear in the game. The frenzy missions are complete garbage however. You basically get 90 seconds to run around with the game's weapon of choice, and blow up parts of an enemy base (generally one you just finished blowing up.) There are never any enemies in this mode, and it's often boring. The difficulty scale is all wrong, some involve a sniper rifle trying to shoot down radio towers, and another might be destroying fuel tanks with a helicopter equipped with missiles. It's just a dumbed-down version of what you just did, except a lot less exciting. This game mode could have easily been fixed if it had been about killing enemies however. Generally in the main game you're not spending most of your time fighting bad guys, you're picking off a few that are in your way and then you're getting away speedily. But having frenzy be about fighting waves of bad guys with a specific weapon would be a lot more fun IMHO. It would make you try out more weapons rather than just going for the biggest kaboom. Plus it would be a good reason to fight the varied array of types of enemies in the game. rather than just whizzing past them on the way to the nearest generator.

The wingsuit missions brilliant are on the other hand, often showing off some of the most beautiful parts of the game while you get to really hone your wingsuit skills. (This will come naturally, by the time you're an hour in you'll be using the wingsuit a lot!) And the Speed missions where you drive an exploding car towards a group of soldiers then bail out before it explodes are a more fun version of the driving missions. Which aren't races for some reason, just a time trial.

The always online aspect is annoying, I would recommend starting Steam in offline mode to play this since there doesn't seem to be an option to switch it off. If you play online it WILL get in the way of you playing the game.

Overall, the game is lacking in some respects. There aren't enough types of vehicles, or weapons, or missions. No submarines or scuba gear ( that I've found) despite a beautiful ocean just screaming to be explored. No multiplayer, which was one of the best additions to JC2 although it was a mod. And I can't help but feel like this is all being held back for future DLC.

My conclusion:
Just Cause 3 is fun, a lot of fun. The game feels great and looks great. If you enjoy making up your own challenges, having a beautiful world to explore and watching things explode and fly around, then this game is for you. I love it to bits, and I can play for hours on end and always have some other insane thing I want to attempt right before I switch off.

But do I think you should buy it?

Yes.
But in a year's time. Wait for the DLC, see if the game is more full of content, see if they add multiplayer. See if they manage to optimise it a bit better! Next Christmas you'll pick up the full game much cheaper then you will now, and you'll have a blast with it. But right now, there's a bit too much missing content for me to recommend it for the price. If you can stand waiting, then by all means do.
