....There's supposedly another patch coming. BE ADVISED THAT PERFORMANCE ON PC IS AWFUL, even on high-end hardware. Ignore the shills and neckbeards; just browse youtube for documented tests and demonstrations. We call these "facts."

On an i7-14700k / 64GB RAM using an RTX 3080 and having the game on an NVMe drive, the game is literally unplayable at default "detected" settings. Constant hitches and freezes while in combat. Constant hitches and freezes while standing still. Hitches and frame drops and 1-2 second freezes in cutscenes. CUTSCENES, FFS.

After a few HOURS of my free time researching this mess to do the devs' jobs for them, the game, at mediocre settings, is playable in the most critical ways - combat has only a few drops, travelling fast doesn't freeze up, etc. Cutscenes still stutter /eyeroll.

So if you wanna pay AAA prices to do your own optimization tweaking and research and don't mind playing at visual settings FAR below the value of your hardware, be my guest. Otherwise, wait at LEAST until Patch 10 is out, and see what the testing shows, to see if it's worth your time and hard-earned cash.

TL;DR This is awesome, get it!

Exploring, crafting, building (building is second only to Enshrouded IMO), combat, guns, Steampunk Victorian gadgets, Frankenstein and Edgar Allen Poe with a side of Ada Lovelace. What more could you want?

The Realms Rebuilt update has greatly improved the intro to the game with bespoke story realms, while the Procgen "untamed" realms still provide infinite exploration (and resources...). Overall systems have been tweaked, fun has been added, and the Hookshot is the greatest thing since things.

If you were on the fence in its previous iteration, you may find the update overhaul to be just what you were waiting for!
Also, throwing knives.

It's 2024 and this game STILL won't let you bind any key you want to use in the keybindings menu.
Pathetic.
I have 104 keys on this keyboard. I do not like controllers. I do not use controllers. How hard is it to make a UI that understands basic ASCII input? Seriously?

UPDATE AND EDIT:
I am very happy to be able to flip this from a No to a Yes after today's patch.
The game is not exactly bug-free, but after today's patch, the most egregious are fixed; the progress blockers and save-brickers especially. Devs claim that remaining major annoyances, such as the myriad broken or malfunctioning abilities, will be addressed within the week, and so far they have kept to their word on patch releases.

At this point, if you don't mind a few (or a lot of) eye-rollers, the game is worth buying without wasting your time - it's playable to nearly the end in its current state without major issues hampering (or completely rolling back!) your progress.

And with that breakage out of the way - I can tell you this is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played in any genre, but should be especially good for RPG players who enjoy player path choices and build-making, as well as a good story so far in the WH40K universe.

Never mind the neckbeards who think that not pretending "certain people" don't exist is "political." Maybe my overuse of Jakobs snipers made me more attached to the guy, i dunno, lol.

The gameplay is the best of the series, no question; the mechanics are the most developed, the skill system is the most flexible and interesting. Movement is so good I keep finding myself trying to slide while running when I go back to play B2 or 1, to say nothing of mantling ("Yes, you can climb now. Get over it." lmao). The story is overall the weakest-executed of the three, as many others are saying, but it's not all bad. I guess there aren't enough butt jokes for some people because the voice acting for most of it is fantastic. There's a lot of the twins' dialogue that's hysterical. Also i suspect more than will admit it are butthurt at making fun of streamers and youtubers, harhar. Part of the problem is B2's story and the attachment to those characters is a tough act to follow. They set a high bar, and didn't overcome it.

While many of the VAs do a fantastic job and the story isn't as bad as some of the whiners say, the story has serious problems. Lilith apparently took Super-Serious Pills and speaks in near-monotone for some reason. The ending, and there's no way to pretty this up, sucks. It's awful. It's weird. It feels rushed and incomplete, like there's a half-arsed cutscene and then OK THANKS BYE with some really bad cliche throwaway lines. I don't get what happened there. Honestly they should redo the last 15 minutes of the game. Seriously. On the plus side, play the intros to 1 then 2 then 3 in order and it's funny to hear how dramatically Marcus' accent improves with each one lmao.

Overall, nowadays it's cheap to load up on the game and all its DLC and check the web for a pile of Key codes that didn't expire and you're good to go at a discount. Just be aware that you may love, hate, or just not care about the story and its main characters, but be ready for the best gameplay, mechanics, customization, and shootiness the series has ever seen. Also, issues with the story are the main plot really. The side quests and most characters you meet along the way are great and mostly insane, as you'd expect from the series.

BE AWARE that there are *still* a ton of embarassing bugs and glitches, mostly in the DLC of all things - especially the added (fourth) skill trees, where they simply weren't integrated into game mechanics correctly (really bad) or like, the Beastmaster's robopet doesn't match your color scheme like the other pets do (really annoying). I can only recommend getting this on sale (like the one currently available as of this review until May 25th). At like a 90% discount or whatever, it's more of an eye-roller, but it's still bloody stupid that such obvious broken stuff persists so long after release. Gearbox is more independent that many other developers so I just don't understand the lack of a proper QA/patch cycle for the broken stuff; no excuse.

COMPLETE RE-WRITE for 1.5, if anyone is still actually undecided....

TL;DR If you know what to expect, and what NOT to expect, I'd deem it worth full price at this point. If your budget's tight, wait for the inevitable sale and you won't regret the purchase.

Grand Theft: Brain has undergone significant improvements over the last year, but before you get giddy over them, be aware they're firmly in the "how the game should've launched" category. It still has issues.... lots of issues.... but even before 1.5, I'd said the annoyances were worth enduring for the overall experience. Now many of them have been reduced, or at least mitigated (while some truly baffling QoL issues and bizarre design decisions remain).

The experience and the characters are still the most engaging parts of the game. Also staples of the genre, like just cruising around in your favorite vehicle with the radio on. The AI has gotten a brain implant upgrade, and Hard combat difficulty is no longer Very Easy, nor does it simply rely on cheap bullet sponges or magic perfect-aim NPCs.

There's still goofy QoL stuff to brace yourself for, and places where the game's design is working against itself:

There's still no autorun, in 2022. Hold that Dubya down to sprint across town! CDPR seems to have fired everyone who owns a keyboard and driving is still a stupid annoyance of alternating between accelerating and decelerating, since the concept of a THROTTLE-type control seems to have completely escaped them.
The default dodge control is still a double-tap (fortunately a mod can fix this idiocy). You can't draw a weapon in your apartment if you want to check out the new scope you just added, but go outside to check it out and everyone starts screaming and running.
On that note, the scopes and other mods and parts give you NO INDICATION wtf they attach to - or more importantly what they do NOT attach to. Crafting specs - which are expensive - don't tell you the details of what they'll make. There's no preview for items or clothes. Make a sniper rifle with your scrounged mats? Hahaha it has ironsights just like a modern or futuristic sniper rifle doesn;t. See a "long scope" in a shop, buy it, surprise sucka it doesn't appear as an option for your gun. Later you find a "sniper scope" and slap your forehead.

Stuff like that.

BUT,

If all the above there makes you roll your eyes, rather than flip tables, you'll be fine. Even if it brings you pretty close to horizontal surface inversion, you might still be fine. The game's strengths do a good job of making you forget its idiocies, for the most part.

Most importantly, I think with this performance I can finally forgive Keanu for Johnny Mnemonic.

Empty, devoid of life, impossible to travel on foot or ground mount, broken terrain that makes base-building irritating, weird choices like water nodes 20 feet away from an ocean. Not recommended. Ironic considering that this started as a mod, but maybe modders can fix it. Needs some serious work.

- I'm in the NW Redwood forest. It's day 62. My wooden base has some ovis and dodos hanging out next to it. I have no walls. Because nothing ever spawns, nothing ever approaches, nothing appears in a 10 mile radius. I keep nerfing the spawn radius settings, no effect. I could sleep outside naked with honey slathered all over me and nothing would eat me.

- At the same time, early game was a PITA, because there are stepped cliffs everywhere with one or NO paths up or down to the next levels. No dodos, no dilos, no "early game" dinos - nothing you can kill for quite a while (terrorbirds, purlovia, thylas) so no hide for you. Lots of deaths tho. And respawning over and over to try to get back to where you were because there are NO foot paths connecting many areas.

- Most of the map is pretty, nice to look at, and dead empty. I have never seen so FEW dinos on any ARK map. There's just lots of nothing. Someone clearly had fun with the terrain generator and called it a day. Broken cliffs and valleys you can't travel on foot or ground mount, and nothing else. Crap for building on, few dinos to tame, why?

- The snow biome is especially disappointing. Again, it looks cool when you get there. Nice screenshots. No snow owls. No good locations for base building. Weird areas where it's suddenly 31 degrees C and you're overheating, in the snow, for no apparent reason. Water well nodes next to large bodies of water (WHY??), but few contiguous spaces you'd want to build on.

- Resources are scattered in the corners of the map. There's no point in taming anything other than a flock of Argents because you can only get anywhere with fliers anyway, and you will spend a LOT of time hauling back and forth across the length and breadth of the map to get what you need. Huge spaces with no dinos, perfectly safe to land and regain stamina and make a sandwich because there's nothing around.

- Found a spider cave in the Redwoods that's filled with webs. You constantly have the Webbed debuff and crawl at half speed. A Megatherium fits into it, but it was too annoying so i left. Swinging a torch at the webs had no effect, does not remove them. Will try coming back with a flamethrower just in case, but whose idea was it to make a cave with a permanent 50% move speed and no sprinting debuff? It's the most annoying thing ever and if the flamethrower doesn't clear the webs I will be ignoring this cave, who wants to spend the entire cave slogging along at a crawl? How boring.

I don't understand the choices behind this design, but it's getting old fast. I want to like it, it's new and looks nice, but this is already a super-grindy game and adding a lot of empty nothing plus a lot of long-distance hauling to it does NOT improve things.

If you're thinking of getting Warhammer the First after playing two, may wanna hold off.

Search for "total war warhammer audio buzzing" and see how many results you get.... going back four years.

Imagine how thrilled I was after giving CA the benefit of the doubt and paying full price for an old game that's basically now DLC, and being hit with an unsolved four year old engine bug that renders the game unplayable without quitting and restarting every five minutes.

Just reinstalled, and 6 hours in to New Game Plus, I feel the same way about it now as I did two years ago.

If you never got this and you're wondering if it's worth it to buy in 2022, the answer is YES.
Hell it'll be worth it to buy in 2032. Probably on some VR emulator. POINT IS,

This game is a masterpiece.

Simple as that. Nothing is perfect, nothing ever will be, but it doesn't get much closer than this. Everything about it is excellent. The worst parts of it are still pretty damn good. Quality, attention to detail and creativity are all apparent in the script (a rarity in games now!), the acting, the gameplay, the feels... oh the feels. It may get you in the end.

It even has The Hu Band ffs

This game is not what it originally set out to be. If you came across the Kickstarter page or some of its original plans, it didn't quite get there.

But! If you're looking for a leisurely-paced builder / crafter / adventurer kinda thing... this game has managed to bizarrely merge elements of The Sims with Minecraft. You're not directly controlling your little Hearthlings, and they can be a little slow to respond (the AI has some issues that were never resolved), but there's lots to build and unlock and advance to, thanks to the Community Expansion the devs authorized when they were ordered off the game onto other projects. ACE adds more depth to the crafting and leveling trees, and therefore more stuff to build and have your Hearthlings mess with.

The violence level is customizable and optional - you can have it easy, normal, hard, or none at all and sandbox away.

Personally, I'd pick it up if it's available for $30 or less, dunno what the price has been doing all these years. I'd feel pretty iffy about $40 or more. If it's $20 or less, go for it, if you like crafter/builders. As a nice bonus, the soundtrack is lovely, although it can get a bit repetetive after a long time.

If you're overwhelmed by complexity, I would recommend playing it "vanilla" once or twice and then, once you have the basics, getting ACE from the Workshop which is the dev-authorized content expansion. If you prefer lots of available stuff to do and depth right from the start, go get that first :).
