tails of the north is a very nice looking cat game with a really nice looking world. you get a small bit of customisation for your cat, but it's not really that much. still nice though!

the movement is janky at times, especially when going up or down terrain, or climbing branches and rocks, but not janky enough to be frustrating.

they give you some lore at the start and vaguely throughout the... 30 or so minutes of playtime if you know where you're going (my playtime is at 51 minutes but i also spent a good 20 or so just looking at the environment and figuring out where to go). it's really interesting and i'd love to know more but they just don't tell you enough about it or what's going on.

the game also ends right as stuff gets really interesting, but i also wasn't expecting that much playtime from the game, considering it IS free and looked very simple. would love to get to know more about the world and it's lore, though, and especially what happens right after the ending cutscene.

this review used to just read "I LOVE MOON", all caps, and i made it when i only had 50 hours in the game. i have 2.7k hours in the game now and i feel it's much more deserving of an actual, genuine review instead.

if you like reoccuring themes of loss, grief, moving on and acceptance, and having to dig throughout the entire world for pieces of lore — you're going to love this game's narratives and lore. if you hate deaths feeling extremely punishing within your first 5-50 hours of playing a game, you're probably gonna hate playing rain world. it has a steep learning curve, but once you figure it out, which can take tens, hundreds, or even thousands of hours depending on the person — it'll feel like a breeze, if this game is your type of game. it's no dark souls and it's no hollow knight, and it never will be.

this game is one of my all-time favorite games. i had 2.6k hours of playtime within a single year, and most of that playtime was replaying the game, and even speedrunning it or doing challenge runs.

this game truly is something special. it's not for everyone, and that is extremely obvious. you can get stuck REALLY easily. the game does its best to guide you with very little things and cues, but if you pay enough attention, you'll figure out what to do, and soon be told what to do (even if through a little flowery and vague language — but it should guide you well enough). the only issue is getting there.

there is a lot of exploration; multiple areas unique from eachother in the game that you can explore. some feature threats of falling into death pits, others you have to traverse water, basically playing 'the floor is lava' or platforming sections where if you fail, you'll probably get eaten by a lizard.

it is so, very, punishing at first. it sucks. a lot of people i know played the game for maybe an hour or two at most before putting it down, and returning to it weeks, months or years later. if you're utterly completely lost, i recommend either finding a friend or person who has played the game and loves it to bits to very vaguely backseat you and pointing you in more clear directions of where to go, or look up the wiki (its on miraheze, not fandom) or interractive map to find paths you can take. be warned that the interractive map does NOT warn for spoilers. the wiki however, does.

the game continually teaches you, time and again: **you are not the main character.** you are just a small animal in a completely unfamiliar ecosystem. if you don't like playing in a game where you are so clearly not the main character? i don't think you'll like this game, especially with how punishing it can be at times.

it's more fun to play with someone backseating and gently guiding you than it is alone, especially if its someone you know, because your failures turn into silly things you can joke about, and your friend might be able to point out things you hadn't noticed.

it is so much trial and error. so much dying to lizards, tumbling down a ledge and dying to fall damage, falling in deathpits, vultures, getting stabbed in the face, and did that pole just eat you? it is also a whole lot of getting lost and re-checking your map constantly.

you don't get upgrades. i don't think i'd personally describe this as a metroidvania, despite how many people have described it as one. the "upgrades" you get is learning how each creature behaves through countless deaths, figuring out cool movement tech on accident (or looking up the 90+ page doc on it), and slowly memorising the layout of the world and how to efficiently get around it.

the game's art is beautiful. the game's lore has so much intricate detail and so much of it is intentially kept vague so you can try learning those answers yourself and theorise. the soundtrack and music triggers for different rooms and regions is breathtaking. there is so much to this game that makes the environment so beautiful and interesting. if you seek the game's lore out you will find so many small bits and pieces that tell you a story.

all of that was just about the basegame. at the time of writing, the game has two DLCs, Downpour and Watcher.
now, Downpour is made for people who LIKE the challenge. who like how hard the game is, and have a lot of experience in it. it will NOT be fun for a first time player. i do not recommend downpour as your starting point. it originated as a fan-made mod made for experienced players, and you can TELL. it is made by an entirely different dev team, with little hands-on development from the original vanilla dev team. this isn't bad, obviously!

downpour has a few moments where the lore doesn't hit quite as well, and where it ends up retconning or misinterpreting the lore of the vanilla game wholly. it is a canon alternate universe, probably for the better. i don't hate the dlc, it was fun to play through, but it is DEFINENTLY much different from the vanilla game, especially in tone and how the lore is conveyed. if you don't like fetch quests or extremely hard combat, i wouldn't recommend downpour to you. in certain campaigns (mainly hunter, artificer and saint) it adds enemies that are just outright unfair and don't feel like they were tested much, if at all, simply because of how overpowered and unfair they are.

then again, the campaign i probably have the most playtime in is spearmaster. i've speedran the campaign quite a few times, i do it for fun. despite me not liking fetch quests, spearmaster, which is a glorified three-time fetch quest campaign, is one i keep returning to just to replay for fun. something about speedrunning it is just fun to me.

watcher, though.... if you liked the vanilla game, you're likely to also like watcher. watcher takes "rat lost in new york city" up to 15. you WILL get lost, and you will probably also come out of it hating lizards and bugs, among other creatures, even more. it does introduce quite a few new mechanics specific for different regions though, which can be fun, but can also be extremely frustrating to figure out.

watcher's story and lore is a lot more in-depth, but also a whole lot more vague and abstract. it feels more metaphorical than it does literal, but the story had me in so much awe when i finished it. there are four endings, but one of them requires the other three to be completed first, and one of them is another glorified fetch quest and can be extremely tedious, because of how much backtracking it includes.

i think i would recommend watcher just for its music and environments alone, though. if you thought the vanilla game looked pretty and sounded awesome, watcher takes it a step further, and tells an extremely intricate story while doing so. watcher's campaign probably holds one of my all-time favorite stories in any game, ever. i would even be inclined to say that watcher can be played entirely without having ever played the vanilla game, but would be a lot easier if you were already familiar with the game.

this game is a work of art. from a niche kickstarter to being an indie game you hear often about (but not to the same extent as ultrakill or hollow knight), it's wonderful to see how far this game has come, and just how well stories are told through this game. there's absolutely no doubt in my mind why there's so many ocs for this game, simply because of how much it offers.

10/10 good game, is as good as i remember watching it being in 2015. great kicker to play if you watched cupquake's old series on it (i don't think she ever finished it? i can't even find an episode 2, i could swear she had one though). smooth controls, love all the character and level design and the fact you can change controls to fit your taste and make them work better for yourself.
once you get the hang of it, the platforming is really fun to do.
though, in level 2, sometimes there's a bug i'd assume where one or two fishbones don't spawn, but thats just a minor inconvenience as long as you've only reached level 2 and only have to restart the game then. had to to that myself, otherwise i don't see anything wrong with the game considering its over half a decade old now.
absolutely love it. kimchi's little white pawtips are so cute.
