Almost a decade ago now, I wrote the following about Undertale: It ties every single aspect of itself so tightly together that the result is one of the most emotional and enjoyable games I've ever experienced.

Deltarune takes that a step further by iterating on all of what made Undertale great. The battle system is expanded with more party members, to great effect. Unique gameplay elements abound and rarely overstay their welcome. The music takes full advantage of the existing melodies already stuck in Undertale players' heads to masterfully reprise and remix established leitmotifs. It's a delight. If you like games that have secrets hidden inside them, they are layers upon layers deep here. Deltarune sometimes feels like it's reacting to your every choice, even the inconsequential ones.

As of writing, there are only 4 chapters available. I don't know when the whole game will finally be out, but one of the ideas explored within is so intriguing that I'm hooked and can't wait for the rest. If you haven't tried Deltarune yet, especially in an age where it's hard to come by truly fresh game ideas, I think it's absolutely worth your time.

Citizen Sleeper is quite the ride, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The characters are heavily grounded, sometimes against the wild events that take place throughout - people just trying to get by. The atmosphere - the space station 'The Eye' - is mysterious and immersive. You develop a real sense of connection, and the game knows how to play on this, making you wonder what will happen to those you've become close with. The story never felt trope-y or rehashed.

My time with Citizen Sleeper's mechanics was sometimes confusing, and I stumbled through systems I half-understood in search of some meaning. The system is simple and quite elegant, but I often wasted resources to learn that I didn't really need because I didn't know what the outcome would be. Perhaps this is part of the design, as your character is in a similar situation. It took me about 30-40 cycles to really get into a flow I was happy with. When I did, I found the skills I invested in helped me graduate to from surviving to thriving. What a cool feeling.

If you can juggle the resource management without feeling overwhelmed, the story, music, and art propel this game to an incredible finale. I wasn't sure what to expect as the game unfolded, but it exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Citizen Sleeper, especially if you're looking for a fresh and unique sci-fi story to invest yourself in.

Tunic is a phenomenal puzzle game with some pretty good combat attached. The soundtrack, visuals, and presentation contain staggering amounts of care, precision, and polish. Even if there weren't any depth, it would still be an absolute ly wonderful little fluffy cake of a game to dig into and enjoy. The art is soft and cute, but somehow completely sufficient for portraying the spectrum of objects, creatures, and landscapes you'll encounter, neon colors mixing with grey and green ruins, and much, much more. It's snappy to control, and runs very well on a wide variety of machines, including on Proton/Deck.

So what makes this game special? Tunic's collectible "manual" - a half-map, half-infodump that you can't understand most of - reminds me of when I read Japanese promotional websites for Mega Man Battle Network 6 as a kid and had to intuit what the pictures meant about new features and content. Give your full attention to Tunic, try to solve it, really try, and you'll be staring agape at the screen more often than not, shouting with
joy and bewilderment. Play with a couch co-pilot, if you can. Sometimes another perspective really helps to clear the roadblocks this game throws at you. In the same way that I told myself I wasn't going to look guides up for Outer Wilds (and failed), I banned myself from looking anything up for this game, for months after its release, and my experience was better for it.

Combat is definitely satisfying
, though still second to the secret sleuthing that propels the game forward. I never felt really frustrated, and when I was, it turned out I had missed a key element of how combat worked that I needed to master, which is a good sign. I did just miss an item that trivialized some of the fights, though, evident when I finally got stuck and needed to find it to get a leg up.

Make sure you've got a good sound system or pair of headphones, and
don't be afraid to crank up the volume. You'll hear this game in your head for weeks after you're done. The game does a very neat effect where it’ll dampen (but not pause) the soundtrack while you look at the manual and write things down , its tracks quietly underscoring most of your critical thinking, and then when you return to the game world, the song comes back in full swing and supports the solution you just found. It’s an incredible feeling.

Tunic's real game is in scarcity of information, and controlling what information is fed to you when, resulting in a masterful I-can't-believe-this-thing-was-here-the-whole-time revelation every time it happens. This means the game is an excellent crucible for speedrunners, as a last added bonus
.

Inscryption is, for better or worse, one of those games where you can't really say much about it lest you spoil it. Try the demo!

Even if you don't usually like card games or deckbuilders, or even horror games (it can be a bit creepy at times), you should give this a shot. Its mechanics are very well realized and there are tons of elements meshing quite masterfully here to create a one-of-a-kind experience. The atmosphere, visuals, writing and sound design all impressed me.

You should play Outer Wilds. On a dark night. On a big screen. You have to be in the right mood for this game, and you will need insatiable curiosity. If you can give a bit of yourself to it, the payoff is one of the best experiences I've had in games.

I picked up this game and dropped it about 3 times because it always felt impenetrable, but I think I was doing it a disservice. I was playing it for what it was on the surface - a neat physics thing with some exploration payoffs - and when I felt trapped or unsure what to do next, I lost my appetite for it. The one thing that kept pushing me away were a few physics puzzles. Use a spoiler-free guide if you have to - it's seriously that worth it. Eventually I found myself dragged in and was unable to pull away. Don't be afraid to write things down and ask questions. There's something bigger going on and you're going to want to find out what it is.

Also, this is the first example I can think of where a game's DLC has utterly destroyed my expectations for what new content can look like. It's just phenomenal. It's a must-play if you enjoyed the base game.

A delightful, well-written experience with characters that you can care about. Has great visual flair and uses it to its advantage. Soundtrack fits _very_ well and I had a few songs get stuck in my head. Would have loved to see a bit more interactable bits and a bit more substance, but is great fun for what's there. Hopefully the free content updates provide this in the future.

Even in early access, it's a worthy sequel. The new look and music elevate this game to something special. Plenty of callbacks and new stuff to discover.

After 70h+ (12/23/19):

If you were worried about how this game could possibly transition to 3D, stop worrying. This game retains what makes Risk of Rain great.

The main gameplay loop is still very satisfying, even without an end boss, currently. With the controls as responsive as they are, the developers have done a great job making you feel like you are always the reason you died, and not the game. The skills update alone added so much content that I couldn't unlock it all immediately, so there's always a new challenge to try and complete - which you are always rewarded for. All of this means that you have a large base of characters, with swappable skills, and an incredible amount of different builds to make each playthrough. The game's roguelike nature means that there are no time commitments - though I do wish runs could be stopped and saved.

The music is once again the highest point of the game for me, the composer outdoing themselves immensely with every new track. Each song immediately adds to the atmosphere of the game's beast-filled planet. Additionally, if you buy the soundtrack in early access, all of the previous versions and demos are included, which is an amazing amount of fanservice.

The devs are extremely responsive to the community, which is an incredible feat given their team size, and very commendable.

I know that lore isn't the focus of this game, but I love reading each new item log as they are released - they are very well written. Hopefully the devs can create a fitting end boss/scenario.

I have no trouble recommending this game if you are at least a little bit interested in any aspect of it. It's a great experience alone, but definitely play with friends if you can.

v1.0 Edit (08/27/20):

More lore, more items, more secrets, more characters, final boss. Nothing not to like here. Oh, and take a few minutes to listen to the music on the last level. Just a great game.

Also - the devs releasing the new stage that was on Stadia shortly after it came out is a solid, solid move.

Hyper Light Drifter is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. It looks and sounds amazing (thanks Disasterpeace), it explains itself just enough, and the controls are as responsive as the game is unforgiving. Sit down and play this game with a controller and headphones.

Half of the hours I have on record for this game are from showing it to other people because I can't recommend it enough.

Undertale creates in you a sense of instant nostalgia and attachment to everything in the game. It does this by tying its spectacular music, art, characters, gameplay, and story impossibly tightly together. The result is one of the most emotional and enjoyable games I've ever experienced.

Play it.
