Man, this game was addicting.

I started the game right after dinner, and finished it around midnight and forgot that I have a job interview tomorrow. 10/10 worth it.

Should you buy it?
If you want to support the dev and pray it'll be better after a few years, yeah.

Should you buy it for the sake of enjoyment?
Probably not now as it's more frustrating than fun.

First off, I appreciate your effort for this game Dev. This really is something.

Let me start with the cons

  • Imagine playing ARMA, but your enemies are Counterstrike BOTS
  • The enemies can locate and shoot at you faster than you can aim down your sights and shoot.
  • Enemies are zapping all over the place while spraying you with bullets
  • Enemies can spot you from very far away then sprays bullets at your general direction (O_O) with uncanny accuracy as if you're fighting a player with aimbot.
  • Enemies are bullet sponges with the poise of a giant Elden Ring boss. You can't stagger them with your shots.
  • At the beginning, when you die, you lose everything and respawn with nothing. You check back if you dropped your loot, nothing. You respawn and run around without any food, ammo, or knife. What's the point of adding that mechanic? You should've just permadeathed all modes.
  • Ultra random loot that doesn't make sense. You get tons of guns, with either lots of magazines but no ammo, lots of ammo but no magazines. Sometimes you get tons of food, but no meds, and vice versa.
  • Crouching footsteps are too loud, I can't hear where the enemies are.
  • Needs drain so fast. How much do you have to eat and drink in 24-in game hours? It's very excessive.
  • The Generalist store mostly sells useless furniture. I was bleeding to death and he wasn't even selling anything useful. He should have a fixed set of essential supply like food and meds, and then half of it would be random when the counter resets.
  • Can't close the game outside shelters, else you lose everything. As a middle aged adult, there are lots of instances where I have to drop what I'm playing to do a responsibility, losing what I grinded for the few hours i have every night for myself is a huge turn-off for me.

Pros:
  • Great environment, well optimised. Runs like butter.
  • Offline shooter I can play alone
  • Great inventory management mechanics
  • Manual reload of shotguns and bolt-action rifles very immersive
  • Weapon inspection
  • Weapon mods
  • No UI clutter
  • Inspect Magazine for Ammo

I would really like to give this a thumbs up, but the inconveniences masked as "Hardcore" is really frustrating as of the time being. I can't recommend this game yet.

Edit: 65 hours in. I'm still in Hernand, pls help.

-The game doesn't know what it is indeed
++You Decide what the game is about.

-Very odd dialogues
-I don't understand the story
++ The only good dialogues is that from the guard that escorts you to your camp.

-Controls Suck at first
++But it's very, very satisfying when you learn it
++ Flying

++ I feel like a god when fighting normal enemies.
++ John Cena, Randy Orton, WWE
++ Amazing bow melee skills
- Meh bow shooting
-Boss fights suck, it's mostly Eat To Win

++ Never left Hernand yet after 40 hours
++ Very Engaging World
++ So many things to do
++ You can settle down and live life
- Weird puzzles
- Can't fast travel while slowing down while walking is still up

++Tons of Inventory slots
-There's no proper categories for the inventory

9/10, even with it's flaws, this game is great.

The game is a mess. The pawns are barely helpful at all and are constantly dying due to bad pathfinding and then falling from heights. Escort quests isn't a simple escort quest as you have to plough through large monsters and the person you're trying to escort ends up dying.

I gave this game so many chances and I'll say nope, I'll put this here as a reminder to never play this game again.

I'll leave this positive review here in tribute to Katherine of Sky.

8 years ago, I downloaded a pirated copy of Factorio in a computer cafe, and installed and played this game (v0.16) with my Intel Celeron laptop. I literally can't buy the game because I didn't have a bank account. I even sent an email to the developers if they'd agree if I can mail them cash or pay via Gcash (Now, steam accepts our local payment processor.)

Back then, I was utterly lost on what to do right after the old tutorial. I then went to YouTube to find guides and that's where I discovered Katherine's Channel. I downloaded all her videos (Entry Level to Megabase) using a dodgy site called YouTube CC Converter.

I watched all 93 videos, and I played alongside her walkthrough.

I learned about Malls, Balancers, Different Builds, the basic logic of automation, things I could possibly do, everything. Everything I knew about Factorio started from her. 120 hours later, I had a decent sized semi-spaghetti factory that's launching 1 rocket per minute.

Now, every time I play this game, her builds are always integrated into my Factories, no matter how many times I restart, and no matter what mods I use.

She made me love Factorio so much, that I stopped pirating games, and started to buy the games that I really love. With Factorio being the very first game I bought when I got my very first paycheck.

She may be gone from this world, but she will be forever remembered as we build our Factories.

Fly high Katherine of Sky.

Great game. Finished it in under 12 hours. Kudos to Capcom for making the game very optimised, even with DRM.

I'm really lost at the account management part, all I wanted was to create a new character as I want to start from scratch because I haven't played in 2 years.

Why can't you guys just integrate the login to the launcher like a normal MMO? I've logged in two of my emails, with 6 created characters, and I can't seem to switch to the character I want.

Unlike BG3, Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2. I just can't get into this game after trying it after every few months.

Most enemies are just too powerful even at lower level difficulties. I get pounded by enemies 80% of the time and have to resort to save scumming. After Act 1, there's suddenly wyverns, overpowered druids, and other unbelievably powerful enemies that are way out of power scaling that you shouldn't even have met in the early levels.

The controls are a mess and you'd often accidentally break your formations while pressing spacebar every 0.5 seconds to prevent all that chaos, and I have to load my save all over again.

The character turns are all over the place, I don't even have any idea anymore who is doing what during combat. NWN-NWN2 did it 1000% better by literally adopting the DnD ruleset, BG3 and Solasta did it best by making the game turn-based.

This game and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is unfortunately gathering dust in my Steam Library, and I'll probably never be able to finish both these games.

Maybe it's a ME problem, i don't know. Everybody else seems to be having fun. It's just sad that I'm getting frustrated more than I'm enjoying the adventure.

I'm opening the comments so maybe people can see this review to give me advice on how to experience the game in a fun way. I'd appreciate any advice that'll gets dropped here.

Great Game, Great Lore, Poorly Implemented, Nonexistent Quality Assurance

I managed to finish the whole game (100 hours in 2 weeks, 60 hours spent on Reddit/Steam Discussions/YouTube).

This game is great at the very core of it. The stress and frustration of not having a map at act 1 forced you to adapt and memorise the entirety of Grayshaft and know where things are at the back of your head. The bugs and poor game design choices were a hindrance a lot of the time, but there's a workaround for those, if you're really thirsty for some Gothic/Risen game.

I would like to thank Xendrasch, the modders, the reddit community, and the steam community for slogging through the game to fix the bugs in game, make the game easier, providing a list of NPC names, for the discussions on how to finish certain quests. You guys are legends.

My itch for a Gothic-ish/Risen-ish game is now sated.

It was a painful and beautiful experience at the same time, but thank you nonetheless Fire & Frost devs.

Old Edited Review

I restarted my playthrough because of the 1.6. patch. I really want to love this game, but it doesn't love you back.

So far, the combat feels like you're fighting Skyrim Enemies on Expert Difficulty, with a character from Dark Souls II who can barely parry and swing his sword.
-Enemies almost have an unlimited pool of stamina.
-You'll get stunlocked by one enemy as they'll spam you with heavy attacks.
-Your character wheezes after 2 greatsword swings.
-Sometimes, your combo won't connect, leaving you like a sitting duck.
-NPCs will steal your kills and you'll get 10xp after strategically fighting an enemy for 10 minutes
-95% of the time, you'll accidentally hit the NPC that's stealing your kill. The whole town then goes against you.
-Ranta mechanics suck. Playing Gwent in the Witcher is 1000% better.

Quests, Dialogues, and Subtitles are still bugged. This is the only game where you'll have to use the Debug Menu a lot of time to fix those broken quests.

NPCs, they're very hard to find sometimes, even after you've found them -> Finish their tasks -> and you have to turn in your quest. "I'll be here when you get back", he was indeed, not there when I get back.

Older Review
Of Ash and Steel

20% Of time spent learning how to Parry and failing miserably due to a Formula-1-Level reaction time requirement.
40% Of time spent trying to figure out where you are and how to progress quests due to vague descriptions.
40% Of time spent Quick Loading.

10 hours of slog and I barely progressed through the story. I'd rather play Gothic 1-3 and Risen 1-3 as those games respect my time.
