I am the invincible rooster that covers all the chicks in the henhouse

Super Mario is in no way a rogue-like . I do not know how we even regressed to this point. Have the very essence of different terms been blurred to an unreadable point? This argument is so incredibly dumb, you should not have any sort of rebuttal. You are comparing a game that was known for its random generation, steady progression, and one death system to a very linear and limiting game.

One of the biggest features of the game Rogue was its ability to randomly generate stages. It was built from the ground up for that exact purpose; the developer wanted to play his own creation. Along with the random terrain, many of the items are completely different with each playthrough, one example being the different collectible potions. Each game, they are given a new and unique name that you are forced to figure out. As the game goes on, you learn new potion names and memorize their effects. This gives the player a sense of novelty with each session.

Mario does not have any of these features. Each level is exactly the same each time, as they are hard-coded into the game and cannot be changed. Nothing is randomized, and if you observe a map of the game, you can find each and every part of each and every level. Super Mario also has no special items, as the powerups are the exact same no matter the circumstance. Mario simply does not have these features.

Another defining trait of Rogue is the steady progression of the game. As it drags on, you level up gradually, get more items, and become more accustomed to what you have acquired. There is a clear time to power ratio that is similar with each playthrough. On the contrary, in Super Mario, The only permanent collectible is the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower, both of which can be easily obtained at the start of the game, and just as quickly lost in an unfortunate move. The game does not slowly make you more powerful, while in turn giving the enemies more of a fighting chance, but stays consistent throughout to provide an unchanging experience.

The last, yet most misunderstood, trait of Rogue is the one death system. If you die once, it is game over, and you lose all of your progress. There is no disputing it; extra lives are for weaklings. This is often misattributed to other games. For example, the popular shooter Escape from Tarkov also has a mechanic in which dying causes you to lose items, but it is not considered a rogue-like, since there is a progression system and a safe storage for items. Super Mario does not have a one death system, since there are ways to gain more lives throughout the game, some even at the very first level.

I can’t believe I had to write all of this. I am right, you are wrong, I am based, you are cringe. Goodnight.
