I was skeptical of CoH3 for a long time given the launch reviews. Tried it during a free weekend, decided it was worth it at the discounted price (50% + a little extra from the bundle, since I have 1 + 2).

I played through the Italy campaign for the first time on Hard/Hard in 2.0. It was enjoyable the whole way through. Building up my own selection of leveled up companies felt good. The mix between scripted missions and a variety of non-scripted missions worked well. There were capture point, capture territory, kill units, defend points (no build), attack points (no build). It was a nice way to include more of the skirmish content in the campaign, while retaining the company customization persistence, and making it feel like the campaign still.

I can't really comment on the QoL enhancements vs CoH2, since it's been a couple years since I played it. Let's just say it felt good overall in comparison to other titles.

Some complaints:
1. Yes, the battle AI is a little mediocre. I was most challenged on the skirmish style maps, just because the pressure can get quite high. And especially until you get some veteran companies (which start with more base structures pre-built, and - depending on your choices - more units unlocked). The scripted missions you can take slowly and carefully, so are generally less demanding.

2. The strategic layer does not have much challenge (again, on Hard). Think of it more as a light management layer and mission selection interface, less as an actual opponent. Still fun - just set expectations appropriately. I do wish there was a quick move option to accelerate some of the animations. I get not wanting them to play in parallel, but when you have a few bombing runs to orchestrate and multiple units to move, waiting for the animations can become a bit tedious.

3. I'm only interested in single player campaign content, so just a review of the base game. The DLC... doesn't look like good value? It only impacts the availability of one company in the campaign, but I barely touched 2/5 options on my first playthough, so there's definitely replayability without it.
