To more specificly answer your questions. It's heavy on the economics, the building is fairly straightforward. The combat is simplistic, but fun to watch, it kinda boils down to 'he who shows up with the biggest guns wins' with defences holding off a decent-sized force pretty handily. Capture is easier than destruction, really it's about the economy, not the combat.
