天安門廣場一直是許多政治事件和學生抗議活動的場所。

也許最著名的事件是1919年五四運動期間的抗議，毛澤東於1949年10月1日宣告中華人民共和國，周恩來死後1976年的天安門廣場抗議以及天安門廣場抗議1989年胡耀邦死後。後者導致了軍事鎮壓，數百名甚至數千名平民抗議者死亡。
