Kannakermann war im späten 19. Jahrhundert unter deutschen Seeleuten eine verbreitete Bezeichnung für Kameraden aus Polynesien oder Ozeanien. Da diese im Ruf standen, besonders fähige und treue Kameraden zu sein, wurde dieser Begriff sowohl für diese Gruppe meist im positiven Sinne und oft auch als „Ehrentitel“ für besonders gute Kameraden europäischer Herkunft gebraucht

Kanake als Schimpfwort
Kanake ist in neuerer Zeit in Deutschland eine Bezeichnung für Einwanderer mit südländischem Aussehen. Zu Zeiten der Anwerbung von Gastarbeitern in den 1960er bis 1970er Jahren oft gegen Italiener, Spanier und Griechen verwendet, zielt der Ausdruck heute meist auf Menschen arabischer, türkischer, persischer, kurdischer sowie süd- und südosteuropäischer Abstammung. Das Wort ist kein Ethnophaulismus (herabsetzende Volksbezeichnung im engeren Sinne), da es unspezifisch auf beliebige Ethnien angewandt wird.
