An hour well spent

I can't remember if I bought this game or got it for free, probably the latter. It was just sitting idly in my library like so many games in my backlog. I noticed it more or less by happenstance and curiosity got the better of me. Overall this is set of minigames based around a simple concept. The main thing that caught me off-guard was the NPC that guides you and „tailors the game for you“ – A-Eye. It toys with you conscience, plugs on your emotions and asks questions, whose complexity contrasts with the relative simplicity of the game.

PROS
  • The gameplay is fun while it lasts, never overstaying its welcome.
  • The dialogues (or rather interactive monologues) are intriguing.
  • Bonus point for originality.

CONS
  • I'm not a big fan of the visual design of A-Eye. I think he (she?) looks too weird and static, Perhaps this is intentional, but I think some of the dialogues would benefit from a design more emotive and relatable.

A good game that faceplants in the end

I was so sure I'd leave a positive review here… I have much respect for Of Orcs and Men and want more of these AA titles that sit somewhere between the blockbuster and indie game space. This game is neither particularly ambitious nor groundbreaking, but what is in there is solid and the anti-hero duo of Arkail and Styx is memorable and well realised. I thoroughly enjoyed the game throughout most of its length, slowly coming up with a strategy that would get me through the game on hard difficulty.

I give up. The final boss fight is an absolute mess. He constantly ressurrects his powerful mobs to the point, where attacking those becomes pointless. Worse still, attacking the boss feels equally pointless due to his immense health regeneration. Now also give him the ability to paralyse your character and you have 'that guy' of a boss. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! It turns out there's no checkpoint before the fight and AFAIK no way to save the game. Upon seeing what one has to sit through to simply get another shot at the boss, my jaw hit the ground. With every attempt you have to go through three preceeding battles and two unskippable cutsenes which can easily waste between 10 and 15 minutes of your life for each try.

Now, I can be persistent, trying the same thing over and over… In this case, I don't think I will give it a shot for the third time. It's just too much frustration and I would rather retain my sanity. Some day I might lower the difficulty just to see how the story ends, but I think I'm done for now. This game got me beat.

The game is dead in 2020

Still asking €20 for a multiplayer only game no one is playing is scummy. Had it been made free, it would have a chance at still providing some fun and possibly attracting people to Battlefront II. If you have a friend to play with, you can go hero against hero or buddy up in horde mode, which amounts to about €5 worth of fun. I just wouldn't bother.

PROS
  • Decent visuals.
  • Has some value if you have at least one friend willing to play with you.

CONS
  • You won't be able to play half the modes.
  • The game is hostile to newbies – you have to grind to unlock blasters and star cards.
  • Heroes, blasters and star cards seem poorly balanced.
  • It's a Frostbite game – expect horrendous loading times.
  • The game has three levels of DRM.

Enhanced my A$$

Yeah, the game is awesome and in some respects better than its sequels. Nevertheless, Gearbox botched this rerelease and in it made the first Borderlands stinker. Old bugs were left in while new were introduced. The only real reason to play this version instead of the original is the FOV slider. However, barring terrible FOV, there are now other things to vomit from.

PROS
  • Better visual fidelity
  • Adjustable FOV
  • You can import characters
  • Comes with the original

CONS
  • Bugs, bugs, bugs…
  • Guns disappear from player's inventory (sometimes they appear again later)
  • The UI sometimes doesn't respond properly
  • The map is all kinds of busted; in co-op the objective markers don't work half the time
  • Connectivity issues, lag spikes
  • VOIP bugs cause the game to transmit audio input when it shouldn't or not when it should
  • The game dedicates needles amounts of bandwidth to VOIP, EVEN WHEN IT'S DISABLED!
  • The ultrawide support sucks (the gameplay is vert-)
  • The performance is overall bad
  • Still no way to disable head bobbing
  • The added features are lame

This is how you reboob a franchise!

It's the refreshing mixture of exploration, combat, platforming and puzzles that truly made this game. The visuals are nice and the game overall aged very gracefully.

The story is mildly amusing, but no character other than Lara is developed enough for the player to get invested in. Thankfully, Lara herself is likeable and being part of her struggle to survive can be quite immersive. That is until the Michael-Bayish portion of the game, in which you ride on explosions and slaughter "ancient Japanese demons" (aka dudes) left and right. I much prefer the subtlety of the first half.

PROS
  • Great gameplay
  • Horrifying death scenes
  • Technical polish
  • Pretty graphics
  • Fun collectibles? I can't believe I'm saying this.

CONS
  • Immersion-breaking ludonarrative dissonance.
  • The multiplayer feels tacked on.

The potential is there

The irony of remaking Gothic is in that you cannot recapture many of the aspects that made the game popular back in the day. It was the technological achievements and then bold design choices that made Gothic unique. Other than that it was an outright unfinished, buggy game with simplistic story and shallow lore.

HERE'S WHAT I THINK THE REMAKE HAS TO DO TO TRULY JUSTIFY ITS EXISTENCE

  • Be polished.
  • Be just as hard, if not harder than the original.
  • Introduce a ton of lore to give the Colony a sense of real history.
  • Allow people to mod the game.
  • Introduce new content and add what was obviously missing in the original.

Relic should answer to Ordo Hereticus

Ater violating the lore and ruining the franchise for what might amount to eternity, the devs just gave up on the abomination they spawned. Dawn of War III is just an unremarkable, dead MOBA with a single player campaign. Oh, and it happens to wear a superficial skin of the 40K universe. And putting it like that is generous.

It's been two months and three updates since the release and there's still no support for ultrawide monitors. How is this even possible in 2018? I will only update this review, once there is a proper 21:9 support.
