One of the best 4 player coop games you can play with friends ever.

Offering a mixture of chill vibes (through a 3 difficulty system, and game-changing artifacts that still allow you to unlock achievements for characters, which make unlocking even more mechanics easier which is definitely intentional), to pure intense chaos and skill with Monsoon, looping runs, Eclipse 8, and like 5 boss fights of which you can pick and choose or skip, this game is very easy to pick up whatever mood you're in.

There is hundreds of hours of replayability, with like a 20 character roster to master and beat the hardest difficulty in so many different and fun ways, so many cool mechanics to influence your rogue-like run that you learn how to better use each time, full of secrets and techniques, this game offers a seemingly never-ending mastery again and again and again. It is a joy to discover with friends and run into and influence god runs.

Also is the reason why the best characters in the world were created: Loader and Drifter, some of the most creative mechanics and fighting gameplay I've ever seen in a game.

Oh, and the music is CRACK. It is INCREDIBLE. I listen to it regularly whilst working.

I spent 64 hours over about 7 days, with 2 days of Christmas in between, and completed the game in that time with 2 other friends. There's basically no games that can really do that. If you love FTB/Tekkit, you'll adore this. If you love optimisation and automation, you'll adore this. If you love loveable, apocalyptic, industrial, cartoonish graphics that feel warm and nostalgic, you'll adore this. The music is just incredible for this immersive evil simulator where you feel the logic and flow of the factory in your veins. The factory must grow and the mastery you feel in it doesn't compare to much else.

I have toyed between liking and not liking this game for a very long time. I saw it was met with a mountain of hate, and I'd been able to embrace some flawed games in the past. Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Mass Effect Andromeda. I had to get my own opinion on this. Running endlessly on planets is horrific, but I could fix it with the Jetpack Overhaul mod and the gunplay was satisfying. The quests in the game just weren't gripping me, but maybe I could invest past the lack of voice acting and body language and into the words and meanings, and hey you can build really cool, livable, usable starships! Then something broke in me. When I finally reached a certain point in the story quest, all the effort I put into levelling my character and starships all suddenly felt pointless. It was in that moment it truly clicked with me that I was playing a soulless game.

Like the pot boiling the frog you can't quite notice it at first. One distraction after another when you land on another barren planet, a dopamine-producing alien killing gunspree later, and ooh maybe that 1 promising outpost in the distance could have cool enemies, a horrifying back story, or great items? Ah it was just enemies in a maze-like interior. And oh there's another over there, I wonder if it's any different! Eventually, you learn to never touch them again, short of if you want to specifically grind for experience points or better weapon tiers, and even then you're better off running around killing wild aliens for XP, which by the way level you 10x faster than any other method.

I spent 10 hours finding quality of life mods on Nexus and they definitely extended my playtime by about 30 hours because they fixed jetpacking, animation times, immersion, and added some character to the world (Space Girls NSFW mod). That still couldn't save it.

That's what 100 hours in this game was for me. Creating that awesome starship I always wanted to, calculating the best weapons and mass distribution I can put on it. Chasing down resources to create experimental weapon mods on every new weapon I picked up. That kind of felt... *fun*?

And then || after a... I think, *exciting*? Main story mission where Walter and I negotiated with an ex-employee for an artifact in Neon, I met the Starborn. What followed was what I can only describe was as if a Redditor was given the task of writing about a new, illusive, dominating alien race making first contact, and that Redditor clearly being a fan of Mass Effect. After some of the most clunky dialogue exchange between you, the Starborn, and your companions, you're able to fight this "ship design you've never seen before" who is prepared to "send you into oblivion", who I immediately trounced and who had only escaped with a smidge of health because I attempted to disable its engines, to which I discovered you can't dock it anyway. ||

I think that's what's shallowly buried beneath the lines here. It's that constant theme in Starfield where something promising shows itself, where it be a mechanic, a new world, the NASA punk art style and sounds, or embers of a space epic story, and then you're very quickly met with a hollow, just slightly stimulating experience so as to keep your head numb and stop you from realizing what's really going on. Playing this game feels like undergoing the processes of indoctrination, but in real life.

That dialogue sequence though. That one dialogue sequence. It triggered memories it should not have. As soon as I remembered the intense feelings I felt during the Mass Effect trilogy, and just how harrowing it was to meet a Reaper for the first time, I snapped out of my stupor and realized how dry my throat has been for soulful story experiences that have real emotion, voice acting, and charisma.

This game lacks all of it, it has no charm. And when you realize it, every effort you put into your action RPG pseudo-roleplay that they've engineered you into comes tumbling down like the weak house of cards it is. The only winning move is never to play. I used to think it was the most mixed gameplay experience I have ever had. Now I can only see it as... a husk of a video game.

There is one thing that this game gave me that I'm truly grateful for. It has helped me realize what I truly value in a game - and what that actually looks like. I'm off to escape my indoctrination before it's too late. I'll be starting the Outer Wilds and Baldur's Gate 3 now.

This game is like marmite. You either love it or you hate it. The game is a solid COOP game... but if you are going to play with your partner I cannot recommend it. This is a 3 player minimum game, otherwise there is more frustration than fun, mainly because you can react to other friends' rage. If you really like this style of intense micro management game, it's probably going to be great with any number of players.

I played my with my partner and we finished it in the end out of obligation, so it became a chore. Would massively recommend Orcs Must Die 2 though!

My Review:

It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome, the side missions are where the game shines.

My Wife's Review:

Buy this game in a year's time when it's on sale.

I really liked the main story, and some of the side missions are excellent. I find a lot of aspects of the world disturbing and unsettling, which is I think proof of how well designed it is IN PLACES (world building was a bit hit or miss for me). There are other issues as well.

Stealth, especially combined with quickhacking, is still broken. The number of times I've had to reload and wait several minutes only to have enemies randomly see me despite me being in a good hiding place, leading to me having to reload yet again (ad nauseam) probably makes up around a third of my total playing time.

I also got 2 bugs on a main mission.

You can tell the game is nowhere near complete. It's not a bad experience on the whole, but that's mostly the storyline making up for all of its other flaws. If you care more about combat mechanics and the more technical experiences of gameplay, you are straight up not gonna have a good time. A lot of patience is needed.

Pretty decent, still a bit broken, not worth £50.

PAYDAY 2 is a great action RPG game that's the most unique of its kind. Because of its unique insertion into the game industry at just the right time, an extremely popular game was released. Feast your very eyes on one of the most fun multiplayer experiences you'll have.
