After the high bar set by 2016's DOOM, I was a little apprehensive about whether or not this would live up any expectations. Boy howdy did it ever.

Is it perfect? No. The sheer amount of things you need to keep track of during gameplay can feel a little excessive at times. The number of interruptions for tutorials to different mechanics, demons, weapons, etc. drags things out a little more than I'd like early on.

But if you stick with it for a bit, the back half of this gets really good. And subsequent playthroughs of levels are really satisfying, especially when you're going for secrets, challenges, and slayer gates.

Slayer gates get a special mention here - beating them can feel AWESOME. Each one ratchets up difficulty just right, and by the end my heart was pounding and the satisfaction was pretty high. Same can be said for battlemode as the Slayer.

Special nod to the game engine - even on my antiquated system (OC'd 2500k, 16 gigs of ram, and GTX 1070 SC), this thing runs super well at a surprisingly high quality level. I only noticed hitching 2 or 3 times during the campaign, and it was usually because my AV decided to run a scan or something else equally taxing. Impressive performance otherwise.

Highly recommended by me. Well worth the wait.

It's definitely reaching for the old-school UT feel while wearing newer clothing. Pacing, graphics, sounds, vehicles are all obviously inspired by UT. Could use a little more polish, but it's very close.
