I am honestly conflicted on whether or not I want to recommend this game. I will stand by my recommendation though because overall it is a good game but to me at least, it is not a good Doom game.

I feel like this game had two different people at the helm, on one hand some of the animations, designs, and gimmicks were really fun and interesting. I think the lawyer and marketing levels were particularly good.

On the other hand a lot of the enemies felt sloppy, the sound design and music were particularly lackluster and I feel like the bosses in particular were either exceptionally easy or had one or two attacks that would hit out of nowhere (I'm looking at you Boba).

Overall, I felt like the game had a lot of potential but lacked a whole lot of polish. It was also REALLY short, I wasn't particularly trying to go very fast through the game and I blew through it in under 5 hours. For a game with a $16 pricetag I was expecting a little more. I wouldn't call it a bad game, if you're looking for a pretty easy platformer with some interesting level design maybe give it a try. I just can't recommend it unfortunately.

I can't recommend this game for everyone. As other reviews have mentioned it plays more like a visual novel most of the time than a game, but here's the thing, for once in my life that didn't matter so much. The game is dark, with equal parts gorgeous and horrendous pixel art along with a great soundtrack. Like a lot of people have pointed out, this game isn't "scary" in the sense that it will jump out at you to scare you, no what this game does is much more insidious, along side the surreal landscape is a story far more real and possible than a lot of us would like to admit. I play a lot of horror but never have I felt this particular brand of discomfort from a game before and I think that's where it truly shines. It tells a story of fear, despair, hope, and anguish. I can already tell that it will be one that won't hit me all up front but will stew in the back of my head for quite some time. Definitely a game, in my opinion, worth checking out.

A great puzzle game with a unique and comfy aesthetic

It is weird to say that a game with what essentially is body horror can be considered "comfy" but I think that Birth definitely achieved that. The soft colors, peaceful music, and distinct line art come together to create an atmosphere I haven't experienced in a game before.

If you're looking for an extremely challenging puzzle game this isn't it, at no point did I get frustrated playing this game, which plays perfectly into the aesthetic, it was a nice peaceful stroll through the neighborhood to make your very own plague doctor person.

Where this game shines is in the calming surrealism, moving around shapes or various body parts, plants, and bugs, to fit what "feels right". You never quite know what you're going to find, but the game gives unobtrusive tells to show that you're on the right track. To accompany it are satisfying little pops and clicks as you move things around until you get it right.

This is an edited review based on a build that had bugs that prevented it to be played properly. The previous issues I had with the game have been resolved and the game has been patched. Props to the dev for showing the dedication to get a game that is clearly made from the heart. Thank you.

TLDR: An enjoyable puzzle game with a unique atmosphere

I think I got caught in a Wario Land 4 fever dream and I love it

It's not often I fall instantly in love with a game like I did with this one. From the very start I knew that this game was special, hitting you with that zany, messy, unapologetic style that works so well for the character and world.

This is a fast paced, exploration heavy platformer with so much speed and momentum that even Sonic would be jealous. Unlike Sonic though Peppino controls like a dream. It is rare for a character to be equipped with such fluid animations and movement tech, his entire kit can be strung together to keep that manic momentum going as you blast through the levels at mach speed.

Going right along with it is a frantic soundtrack that keeps the player moving forward at all costs, paired with a large television screen that expresses Peppino's emotions at the time. I can't express to you how much I love that television, seeing how Peppino is feeling based on what you're doing will never not be entertaining. Whether it is running at full speed, having a wacky transformation, or the evil grin when you start building a combo, you can really feel the expressions through the beautifully animated sequences on the TV.

I know it is presumptuous to say, but even at this point I can't see how I won't be voting this for a contender for game of the year. Thank you Tour De Pizza for giving this gift.

I really wanted to recommend this game, the visuals of the alien world and the mechanics of the harvesting of vitae was horrifying and fascinating. However, it was held back by convoluted mess of a story, in comparison to the other narrative driven games they've made, this one feels...off. Instead of allowing the player to learn about the world through reading tomes, wandering through the vast and interesting alien landscapes, and experiencing the horrors of the world, we got big exposition dumps from the character talking to herself, getting weird game stopping unskippable flashbacks, or the main character literally explaining the obvious right in front of us while it is happening.

The real disappointing thing is, the game showed itself perfectly capable of telling the story without the above mentioned grievances, those bits of the game were fun and interesting, allowing us to come to our conclusions rather than being spoon fed them.

Overall I feel disappointed by this installment, it had great potential, some really interesting story and gameplay aspects, but was held back by fluff and exposition dumps. Also this is probably a nitpick but it really annoyed me to have to be interrupted every few minutes because the baby kicked and I had to "press x to have Tasi talk to the baby"

I can't believe this game only came out this year. I feel like it has been ages since I last played it, but yet, despite that it is the game that continues to come back to my mind when I think of the things I played. It made me FEEL things, the absolute strangeness of the game was offset by a cast of fantastic characters all of which who had hidden depths that most game devs could only scratch the surface of. I don't know if it was due to the fever dream, nightmare within a paradise that made it hit so hard, or if it was just extremely well written, but everything came together to me, to form a story I couldn't keep my eyes off of. It had me scour every last nook and cranny for secrets, and if my list of achievements is anything to go by, I barely scratched the surface of what the game has to offer. And it is this loving attention to detail, and commitment to exploring the secrets the world has to offer that really draws me in. More than even the biggest, best funded games I've played this year, this game managed to touch me in ways none of them did. For that reason among many others I think it most definitely deserves to be the game of the year.

This was my first time playing one of these kinds of games and I have to say I was quite impressed. The atmosphere was forboding and moody which is what I was hoping for. The puzzles were fun and interesting, and the different mechanisms coming apart as you progressed were amazing.

The visuals especially greatly impressed me, each room was detailed and distinct (which is something I would hope out of a 4 hour game) and the sound effects that went along with the mechanisms were extremely satisfying. While it was a short game, I'd say for the price and the little journey it gave it is definitely worth the price.

I say yes for recommendations but I am genuinely on the fence on whether or not I actually recommend it so I'll try to say why I feel this way.

At the end of the day I did enjoy the game, the visuals were stunning, the voice acting was good, the puzzles were great, and I did like the story and the "split screen" mechanic.

However I did have some issues as well. First off, the game never really ran extremely well, even with a GTX2080 I was struggling to maintain 50 frames on high settings and would drop to 20-30 at parts. Secondly, and this is a personal opinion, the fixed perspective really took me out of the immersion of the game at times (which I believe is very important for horror games especially) with bumping into walls, sudden perspective changes, and it being unclear which hallways/doors need to be explored or are just walls. And lastly some of the stealth mechanics were frustrating, it might be I'm just bad at stealth games and I do admit the colored arrow when focusing was extremely helpful but there were certain sections where I felt I got caught without any indication that I was close enough to do so.

Overall I genuinely enjoyed the game as a whole which is why I will say I recommend it, but I do think some of the issues I had took me out of the full experience.
