I grade Event[0] with a B. My experience is that the game's AI and chatbot-like responses are pretty hit-and-miss. I would say that it couldn't understand about half the sentences I typed, even with full sentences as the description suggests. Some actions, such as opening doors, are more syntax-sensitive than I would have guessed.

But it was an enjoyable experience, and more tense than I thought it would be. I felt that the game was worth it on sale at $10, but I'm not sure I would have felt the same at full price. Still, I've bought more expensive games that I've been less happy with, so if you want a fun little space mystery adventure with excellent environmental storytelling, I recommend Event[0].

Ninja Village is an A-, and is my third-favorite Kairosoft game. I own just about every Kairosoft game that was released to Android, and I'm happy they're being released to Steam too. Kairosoft's games are fantastic entry-level casual experiences that make it extremely difficult to lose, for better or worse.

A lot of Kairosoft's benefit from mouse control over screen-taps, and Ninja Village is absolutely one of them. As an entry-level strategy and city builder game (think Romance of the Three Kingdoms mixed with early SimCity), having the precision of a mouse rather than tapping on a small screen really makes a difference.

Ninja Village is also just a little more challenging than some of their others, such as Dungeon Village, but the challenge of Ninja Village mostly comes from how slowly you get money to build up your forces; until you're used to the gameplay loop, money may come slowly, and there will be periods of sitting around doing nothing. I think this also benefits the PC port because you can get up and go grab a sandwich or whatever while waiting for your cash to build up, or alt-tab over to YouTube and watch something.

Speaking of YouTube, I played this game for my Streaming Sundays show, though I was playing the Switch version where I start a new game from scratch. You can see the gameplay in action and judge for yourself. You can see that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWtbqxi6CYU

Although some of the Kairosoft games might be redundant -- Pocket League Story for one, since Football Manager is a thing -- more casual and entry-level games on Steam is a good thing. My wallet weeps, but I'm probably going to wind up rebuying every Kairosoft game as they develop them. It's no exaggeration that I've gotten more gameplay out of dropping $8 on Ninja Village than I have on some $20 or $30 early access games.

I give What Remains of Edith Finch a C. It looks gorgeous, its environments are highly detailed, and the styling of the family members' individual stories are well-crafted. The music is extremely good too and sets the mood well for each story.

Personally I did not enjoy the story, and I was not hooked within the first hour. I gave the game a fair shot and I'm not going to ask for a refund because I truly believe any issues I have with the story are subjective. While some may find the story brilliant, relatable, or intriguing, I personally was not hooked and had no desire to see it through. I respect what the developers tried and I would be happy to give another game of theirs a shot, but the story was too dry in my opinion to warrant finishing the game.

Reviews like this are difficult to write. There is nothing wrong with the game -- it's stable and aesthetically pleasing -- and the writing is done well on a technical level. However, whether it was the subject matter or just personal taste, the story just lacked whatever hook was needed to get me interested. Your mileage may vary, and I would recommend the game if exploring the house or the premise of the story interest you.

DISCLAIMER: I received Heavy Rain for free from a friend of mine who is unconnected to the games industry. It was just a personal gift.

Heavy Rain was an A- at the time of its release, and probably a B to a B+ now on Steam. The story still holds up and has solid voice acting. The graphics are janky by 2022 standards but were solid considering its release date. There are a few graphical bugs here and there and one instance where one of the on-screen characters had to warp to her next position, which was weird but forgivable. It's Quantic Dream's second-best game after Detroit: Become Human, and an excellent entry into the "interactive fiction" genre that I hope more studios attempt.

Starship Corporation is a D+. I wanted to like it because I like economic games, but it's just a little too opaque in its mechanics. Some reviewers have complained of the interface, but I find that it's fine. The minimalist nature of it isn't pretty, but it works from a corporation CEO standpoint, and that's the character you play as.

My biggest issue with the game is how difficult it is to get started. The tutorial covers some concepts, but doesn't cover the reasons behind what you're doing. It's like if an algebra teacher showed an expression and a solution, but didn't state *why*. For a game where you're supposed to be running a business, there is little feedback as to why certain things aren't working.

For example, I installed an engine on my ship that CONSTANTLY broke. Is this because I didn't have enough technicians assigned to the room? Or is it because the engine itself an outdated piece of garbage and I was supposed to research engine tech immediately? The game does not help with this; there are no reports from your designers or other feedback aside from "This is currently broken."

If you stick it out, I recommend looking up guides or YouTube videos or whatever. Starship Corporation seems to hate pure experimentation, so there are right and wrong ways to design your ships. For me, it was just too much work, and I wasn't getting enjoyment out of the process, unlike more friendly physics-based builders. Starship Corporation is not a bad game, but it takes much more commitment than I'm willing to give it.

Works as advertised and I enjoy it. Most of the effects are nice, and the low cost is worth it.

Pony Island is a B+. I came here *after* playing Inscryption and watching a Let's Play, which really isn't the best way to experience a Daniel Mullins game, but it's been long enough that the secrets are long since out. Even knowing what I was in for, it's an excellent mind-screw of a couple different genres. It can be beaten in just around two hours if just care about the plot and not the 100% run. I really like it.

The thing I've noticed about Inscryption and Pony Island is that Daniel Mullins WANTS you to beat the game. During the action scenes of Pony Island, you get plenty of subtle help if you die. For example, if you keep dying by falling onto gates, the gates VISUALLY stay the same but their HITBOXES get a little skinnier. Enemy attacks are the same way, where if you die to several projectiles, they might need to hit more than just your little pony rump in order to register as a hit. There are no direct "Difficulty Levels" per se, but it's clear Mullins wants gamers of all skill levels to be able to experience his story. Respect.

Inscrpytion made me a Daniel Mullins fan, and Pony Island just solidifies it. Now to play The Hex!

Inscryption is an A-. It's difficult to find flaws in the basic card concept, which is simple enough to grasp but complicated enough to really make you think about your moves. It's also a game that wants to be beaten since in every act, you pretty much get shortcuts on making your deck OP provided you do the "escape room" elements. The learning curve is gentle enough too that when new mechanics are added, it's never overwhelming, and you can easily build what you already know.

Inscryption has made me a Daniel Mullins fan, and I bought Pony Island and The Hex to play too. However, like those games, some ARG knowledge is required to understand the full story. The ARG has been fully decoded and it only takes some Googling to get all the required documents. You'll get like 90% of the plot just in-game, so no worries there. Personally, I wish *all* the plot was contained in the software itself (not just for Inscryption), but I totally get it. I only say that because I'm terrible at ARGs, haha. Regarding Inscryption in a vacuum, you'll probably understand the crux of the story just from the game even without any Googling. It's a great game and I want to play more of it just for card-based gameplay.

Song of Farca is a C+. The plot goes a little off the rails toward the end and I think it's a bit too clever for its own good with the narrative pacing. There is a ludonarrative dissonance because the upper portion of the screen plays in real-time, yet the plot is not delivered to you in the same real-time.

For example, there is one point where a character will be on the phone with you. After that, you'll have a phone conversation with someone else. When the second one concludes, the first character may be dead. Once you learn the details as to why, it will make no logical sense how all those events could have happened that fast. It would make sense if there was some indication of passage of time -- an in-game clock, a screen fade-out and fade-in, just something -- but there isn't. It kills any sense of thrill when you realize the passage of time within any given case of the game is meaningless.

The style of dialogue is also a bit too stylized for its own good. For the most part it's passable, but a few exchanges really strain how people actually talk to each other. Despite the cyberpunk theming, the setting of Song of Farca isn't removed enough from reality to justify bizarre language choices. Given that the developer is Russian, I assume this comes down to translation, and it doesn't have any severe errors. But also given that Song of Farca is so text- and dialogue-heavy, that hurts the way it's presented.

It's still a solid investigative game, although I don't think its choices matter as much as it wants you to think it does. I finished the game in 10 hours, so I think my money was well-spent. Personally though, I prefer Orwell and the Phoenix Wright series, and would recommend those over Song of Farca if you haven't played them yet.

It's... fine. No reason to spout generalities when there are 400 other reviews to do that; it's a strategy game with some decent mechanics. The mouse control is wonky, likely a result from the game clearly being made more for a mobile screen.

I disliked the pacing of the campaign. The introduction of new elements is unevenly given. For example, the game will introduce a new unit, but in the same level not give you a reason to use it. There are also a lot of mechanics at play, and it will take several failures before you can keep them all in mind. That's fine, it's part of the genre, but it's a bit too quick of a pace in Skulls of the Shogun. After a particular level in the campaign where the objective was a complete departure from what I had learned to that point, I was done.

Skulls of the Shogun is all right for a strategy game, but there are better ones out there. If you like this genre anyway, it might be worth getting to add to your collection. The multiplayer options, good difficulty level (including optional adjustments), and low price point are all attractive. However, I still prefer different games of the same genre to this one, and I'd advise you to avoid it if you're new to strategy games.
