An incredibly steep learning curve but once you understand how things work it becomes fairly easy. Pick a country/empire/duchy and see how far you can lead your dynasty. Instead of playing as a country you play as a dynasty. You are represented by 1 member at a time. When that member dies you take over their heir. Through diplomacy, bribery, arranged marriages and assassinations you gain position in the world. Position yourself to inherit entire kingdoms.

There is no goals except the ones you make yourself. There are some goals laid out in the game but you don't have to follow them at all. If you want to take over Europe as the Byzantine Empire then go right ahead. My last playthrough as the Byzantine Empire I conquered Germany and was working on France. I stopped playing that because the expansion "The Old Gods" was released and I decided I wanted to see what was different.

Overall a very satisfying game that doesn't hold your hand. It gives you this sandbox and says "Go wild!".
