Planetary Annihilation is an ambitious project that ultimately crashes and burns before the finish line.

This game takes a lot of homeage from well known games like Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. The idea of massive armies going up against each other in complete and utter destruction sounds very fun, unfortunately, Planetary Annihilation attempted to up the ante by making these battles take place on a larger scale, a scale that the developers simply couldn't make work.

The gimmick of this game is battling planet to planet, but the problem becomes apparent right away: The controls are AWFUL, scrolling in and out to view other planets feels choppy and unintuitive, and since the battles takes place on a sphere, you have no minimap to quickly get an overview of what's going on.

The game also lacks second monitor support, and as a stop gap to the aforementioned problem with minimaps they've made a "Picture-In-Picture" functionality that's frankly and insult to what should've been.

The game is also severely lacking in plain content, there's just one faction and a few unit types that have a hard time distinguishing from each other. Compared to it's soulmates Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander this game also takes away the beloved experimental weapons and switch them out with "Super-Weapons" that while awesome at first, feels extremely bland and boring in the long run.

All in all this game simply can't be recommend in it's current state, and unfortunately I have a hard time seeing this game ever be worth it for the asking price of admission.

Perhaps my favourite game of the year. This is a new standard for the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Take this from a long time Assassin's Creed fan: if you like the series, this game is a no-brainer. Buy it, if you have to wait for a deal do that, but buy it at some point.
