This is a really fun game. I was never into simulators, never got into vehicle based combat outside of Battlefield, but there's something about this game that makes it really interesting and fun.

The best way I can think of describing it is that it's similar to how Insurgency reached a middleground between arcade and realism. Where Insurgency finds itself somewhere between Call of Duty and ARMA (or maybe Squad?), Gunner HEAT PC is somewhere between Battlefield and Steel Beasts. If you like one of those games, even if you gravitate more towards one than the other... odds are you will like this one.

I eventually got Steel Beasts, which has some overlap with GHPC but it doesn't feel as polished or as accessible. While I like playing both, GHPC is where I wanna go if I want some action without needing to mess with downloading custom scenarios or reading maps too much. The voice acting in GHPC is also better by leaps and bounds, which adds to the immersion and tension when rounds start flying.

GHPC doesn't have Workshop support, but there are some mods for the game that can increase replay value too. I think it's fine as-is so I haven't messed with it, but I've seen people using M1A2's, different camo patterns, that sort of thing. They're all on the game's Discord.

Overall one of my better purchases on Steam by far.

I didn’t give this game a chance for the longest time because of the visuals. I didn’t get a 3080 to play something that looks like this, you know?

But now… it would be an understatement to say they’ve grown on me. There’s something about seeing blocky characters doing brutal things to each other in game, medics dragging bodies around, lol. It keeps it feeling lighthearted and casual. There’s no death lines or voice acting, apart from what players provide themselves through the wonder of proximity chat. Which works to the game’s advantage and is no means a fault.

More or less, gameplay wise this scratches the BF4 itch for me. I got into that game about 10 years late, but eventually you run out of things to do and people to play with. I only played Engi in that game, and I only play it here. I’m a DMR type guy and while the actual DMR’s are frustrating to use in this game, the SCAR/ACOG combo puts in work.

Destruction is similar to BF4 but more — things like staircases that were indestructible in Battlefield games don’t get the same protections here. Opens up some new possibilities like snipers destroying stairs behind them to prevent flankers.

The only thing I’d change about this game is probably the sound… at times I wish the shots and explosions had a little more “oomph” to them. But then again, I think they fit the visuals so maybe they fit. I do wish Battlebit had main menu music though, I always think my sound is muted until I get into a server.

What really makes this game is the community. Proximity chat is one of my favorite things to have in games, but without good moderation it would make the game worse instead of better. In every other game, I mute voice entirely for this reason. But in Battlebit I’m happy to report that the voice chat is surprisingly wholesome and if you don’t wanna hear Fortunate Son for the thousandth time in a helicopter, it’s super easy to mute a specific player without needing to bring up menus or scoreboards or anything.

Overall I’d say this is a 9/10 or 10/10 game. I don’t stick with alot of games but I really recommend this one.

If you get the game, here’s a few tips:
  • You can shoot the parachute on the resupply crate to make it fall faster.
  • When building, you can rotate a wall with your scrollwheel so you don’t need to be in the open.
  • You can leave/join squads while you’re still alive by hitting your Enter key.
  • The remote controlled gun on the truck says you can zoom in with right click, but it’s actually scrollwheel (this may eventually get patched)
  • You can bind Drag and Medic to the same key
  • Put some armor on your dome. It’ll save you, a lot.

It's just not Battlefield.

I don't feel like repeating what everyone's saying about the performance, empty maps, bugs, etc. They're all right, but that's not even whats truly wrong with the game. Even if EA/Dice made the game run at 1000 FPS, added cover and visual fidelity to all the maps, and fixed every single bug in the game... it still wouldn't be fun and it still wouldn't be Battlefield.

You can't have Battlefield without having classes. I wanted to give it a fair shot, I played the game for 37 hours and 37 hours later my opinion didn't change. There's a bunch of other stuff I don't like but I'd probably overlook or adjust to them if the game at its core was fun.

At this point, I feel like for this game to be accepted by the Battlefield community they'd have to fundamentally change it so much that it would piss off the people who do enjoy the game with no guarantee of bringing back those who don't.

Way more fun than I expected, and I'm not done with it yet.

My friends know that I never venture out of my comfort zone with games. For the last 6 years, the only games that have stayed on my Recently Played list on my profile are Insurgency and Rocksmith. Literally nothing else. Despite my better judgement, I keep buying games, but it seems like they never really grab me and pull me in. But somehow, Thief Simulator managed to do just that.

At first look, when I saw this game on Steam, it honestly looked like one of those asset flip games. You know, the kind that BigFry ♥♥♥♥♥ on in his YouTube videos. The type of games where the developer grabbed a few blueprints, mixed in some assets, and made it work just well enough to edit a trailer out of it. So I saw the game on Steam awhile ago, thought it looked cool, but never pulled the trigger because the graphics didn't really do it justice. None of my friends seemed to be playing it, so I didn't wanna take any chances and moved on. Then I saw a VTuber (don't judge me!) playing it. The actual gameplay looked fun so I grabbed it, and so far I've thrown about 10 hours into the game in a matter of days. It's that good.

Lots of games have cool mechanics, but they introduce them in a way that I frankly don't have the patience for. Tutorials are boring and forced, but Thief Sim does a great job of simply guiding you along your first missions with some hints and stuff and it gets you going without getting in the way. After you understand the mechanics of the game, or even before if you want... it's all free-roam GTA style. You can break into any house you want, steal stuff... or not. You can go in all stealthy when they aren't home, or rush in after smashing a window and make off with whatever you can before the cops arrive. It's all up to you.

What surprised me is every time I felt like I was nearing the end of the game, and I already felt like I got my money's worth... it would drop some big new thing on me to explore. First it was the ability to steal cars from peoples garages. Then it was a whole new neighborhood. Then it was disassembling cars so the the parts can be sold at a higher price. Disabling home security systems, and so on. This game is very well thought out and keeps giving surprises.

I usually don't review games before I finish them, but I wanted to recommend this game while it's still on sale. Knowing what I know now, it's totally worth $20... but I think $20 puts it out of the range of impulse buys for most people, me included.

There is a short list of things I don't like, but it's not big enough of a deal to detract from the fun aspects of the game.
  • It has a little input lag when I move my mouse. I'm getting high frames with my 8700k/GTX1080, but it feels like there's some delay when I look around. But since this isn't an action game and it relies on strategy instead of aiming, it doesn't impact gameplay at all.
  • Disassembling cars is a chore. Granted I'm not done the game yet so there might be a skill or tool to unlock, but clicking on every bolt of every component to remove it (like Car Mechanic Simulator) feels like it's taking me away from my thieving for way longer than it should. The stripping down of cars is cool, but it gets repetitive. I personally just sell the vehicles while fully assembled. Maybe there's a impact gun in the game somewhere and I haven't unlocked it yet.
  • Little odds and ends stuff. I wish I could drive directly from one neighborhood to the next, without having to visit Home/Pawn shop first. It would be cool if we could get in our car and start driving by pushing W, instead of looking down at the ignition and pressing E first. That kinda stuff, nothing game breaking.

Game-breaking input delay.
The gameplay in this game all revolves around timing your movement to avoid traps and kill enemies, but with the huge input delay (250ms at least?) it's unplayable. You'll open it up once or twice, create your character, walk around until something kills you that you couldn't avoid (due to the input delay), then close it and never play it again.

This is on a 8700k @ 5GHz, GTX1080, 32GB RAM.

Brings me back to growing up on the Ace Combat series.
I grew up playing these on PS2, and this feels like a great followup to those games that shaped my childhood. Back before multiplayer console games were a thing.

Pros:
  • Looks great
  • Runs great on a fairly high end PC (8700K, GTX1080, 1440p Max)
  • Controls feel natural when using a XBox 360 controller at default settings
  • Story is interesting. I really wanna see where it goes.

Cons:
  • Some missions are frustrating at times... I wish singleplayer games would just let you skip a mission if you fail 3-5 times just so you can progress in the story. I have tons of singleplayer games that are uninstalled just because I don't feel like following some stupid VIP or finding some key or some ♥♥♥♥. I'm worried that at some point, this will be one of those games.
  • The A10's cannon audio is very underwhelming. If you were expecting to BRRRRRT in this game, you will be disappoint. If the gun had more bass to it, and shook your cockpit a little when in first person (not that I ever use first), then it would be awesome. It's a powerful weapon in the game, no doubt... but it doesn't feel like a powerful weapon.

If you don't have a history with the franchise or aren't too into these types games, I'd still get it... but probably not at $60. For $45 or so it's a solid buy.

Pros
  • It feels like a sequel to Insurgency. The fundimentals of Insurgency are there... you have your objective based game modes that reward teamwork, dead aim hipfire mechanic, lethal gunplay, and a realistic middle eastern setting.
  • The sound is top notch. Every sound you hear has some pretty advanced audio effects applied to them, so you can tell if someone is talking from the other side of a wall, shooting from inside a building, etc.
  • Blood & gore. If a player is close enough to wall when they are shot, their blood will get sprayed onto the surface and streak down. Arms, legs, heads... depending on the damage the player recieved, they won't always stay attached. Makes everything feel that much more lethal.
  • Sandstorm has vehicles but it's still very much an infantry shooter. They make for good rapid attack/transport vehicles, or as a static weapon platform to lock down a lane... but you'll rarely see them driving around as fighting vehicles laying waste to infantry. They're highly vulnerable to small arms fire.
  • Fire support is strong enough to be effective, while still being easily countered/avoided. Fire support ranges from smoke mortars, HE artillery, to gas/rocket attacks and different types of air support. But each one is easily countered by simply staying inside, shooting it down, or putting on a gasmask. However, it can still change the pacing of the round enough for the attacking team to move up and gain a better foothold.
  • Official servers perform very well. There's the occasional hiccup if a ton of stuff is happening, but otherwise the servers are running at 60 tick which feels very fluid & solid on UE4.
  • In typicial NWI fashion, there will be modding & long term support for this game. If you're totally new to the Insurgency franchise, it's worth noting that the devs have a long history of providing free content for their games for years to come. New maps, weapons, gamemodes, animations, etc. were all added to Insurgency years after release. The Insurgency that I bought in 2014 is not nearly as cool as the Insurgency that I can open up now.

Cons
  • Frametimes can be inconsistent for some users. Some users report inconsistent frametimes, while others on even lower-end hardware report super smooth gameplay. The devs have stated that optimization is the #1 priority, and while they've made HUGE improvements from only a month or two ago, it could use some more love. But given the long history of this dev team with their other titles, there's no reason to think that this won't be addressed. I think the fact that the game is slated for a console release is a very good thing in this regard because any optimization they perform here on PC should transfer over well to smooth console gameplay. If your PC is stronger than a XBox (and it probably is), you'll be in good shape for Sandstorm.

Other Thoughts
  • The game's logic is mostly single threaded. Like most games... having fewer, faster cores is more important than having a bunch of slower ones. For this reason, my 4770k from 2013 runs this game well, while a more recent budget CPU may struggle.
  • It takes a bit for things to load in if you install to a mechanical HDD. Some users still install the game onto regular HDD's which have trouble loading assets fast enough which can result in temporary invisible hands, longer map loading times, etc. Since SSD's are so common these days I didn't feel like this is a mark against the game, it's more of a protip.
