Sadly trying to make it generate a funny video is like pulling teeth; I don't expect masterpieces but a more complex control over the process (setting frequency of effects manually, forbidding certain effects from clips of certain length to stop boring segments, some more I'm sure) would go a long way.

The Workshop integration is lovely though, I love all the silly YouTube poop sound effects, though I swear some just outright don't show up. Probably an issue with the mods themselves though

Wonderful Everyday's presentation - the erudite painterly photos on the store page with just a bit of abstract chic, its reputation as the "philosophy visual novel" are prescient but to me felt deceiving by the end of my time with this 50-60-hour behemoth.

Far too much time reading Wonderful Everyday is somewhere between boring, tropey or downright offensive in its portrayal of its subject matter; there is some genuine gold in here that I doubt is replicated anywhere else in any medium but I'm skeptical that it's worth the massive undertaking.

Very obviously one of the most exciting projects in gaming today. Deltarune excels at letting you fall into its world, carrying you seamlessly between quirk and an almost adolescent humour to the gravest of prophecies and losses. All this with amazing music and sound design, worlds to get lost in, Bitingly challenging optional bosses, and so much more.

I appreciate the precise angles you can incorporate into solutions (though I don't think this was on purpose, on a decent amount of maps I can perform better than 3 stars) but the vast majority of this game is contending with the clunky controls and the microscopic iteration between each level, a frustration amplified by a star-ranking system - a fatal blunder in any puzzle game for its brutal discouragement of real experimentation.

Everything that could be appreciated here is done better in or left unchanged from the free original. For instance hiding in the closet is made completely unviable due to a buff in the speed of the Onis. It gets bad enough that the best way to max out the groan-worthy ranking system (which bizarrely incentivizes a low step count above all else) is to let yourself die on every unscripted chase and save scum until you win.

The "upgrades" - the high-def graphics, the Kitchen Nightmares sound design (especially egregious in the menus) - the outright sound replacements (The "Oni Room" and ending in particular are made especially confounding) - tear the amateur RPG Maker chic of this game to shreds. It's really sad to see.

The original "Ai Story" seems promising - especially for a game as narrative-loose as Ao Oni - but the randomization of rooms means game design choices I hadn't as much thought of playing any version of the game suddenly come to shine; Onis emerge from literally nothing to chase you, white sparkles indicating items are placed on top of white carpets... all in all this is just a frustrating port of what is genuinely a charming, mysterious indie classic.

Regarding the appraisal for this game I definitely think that addictiveness is kind of inappropriately used as a barometer for quality; if you see video games as just a means of meting out time (not that this is never the point of a game, or that it's some inherently bad end for a game to strive toward) this is well and good but past a point it gets excessive, some of me does look back at the peak of my interest in Balatro with reservation. I don't think it's intentionally designed to be a Skinner box or anything - it's a one-off purchase by some anonymous Canadian dev - but it's part of the game nonetheless.

That said, Balatro is teeming with lovely design decisions. It mixes the format of a 52-card deck and the possibilities of video game programming very lovingly into a game where every run is, if not some legendary story, a very engaging in-the-moment romp that (almost) always feels very imminently fair and merciful as you claw your way up the antes with your ragtag band of Jokers.

The ending of every lobby is sadly a monotonous grind but that early-mid game is a lot of fun

The charming slapdash aesthetic of the ENA YouTube series is at its pinnacle here; the art is more adventurous, and the game-emulation of the videos is now in its full form. What on paper is a series of silly fetch quests feels like an exploration of an amazing, mystifying, before-anything-else aesthetic world.

Peggle roguelike sounds like literally the best thing ever - and I got a lot of mileage out of repeating the simplified demo over and over - but sadly playing the main game, to me, feels like a slow uphill battle with a million random stopping points.

I might revisit this one someday, I truly hope I'm just missing something
