Coming in a little early I'm sure, but I've played through 6 campaign missions so far, and it's like I never left Homeworld. The game is stunningly beautiful. Truly an artistic masterpiece. The ship damage decals are very effective. The gameplay is very much what you want from Homeworld, ship formations, stances, bringing the right guns to bear on your targets. It feels like they took the best of HW2 with some of the high points of Cataclysm, and wound it around a very interesting plot, giving us an even better look into hyperspace. Must get if you are a fan of the series, but if you're just into real time strategy, there's a lot to sink your teeth into.

The game betrayed my trust, and I cannot forgive it

I was super into this game, I loved this game, I adored this game, i told everyone to play this game. I talked it up as a turning point in video games. Not to put too fine a point on it, this game was everything.

Until I got to the end of Act 2, then the game betrayed me. It had built up trust with having control over the consequences of my actions. It is not that I don't want my actions to have effects, but rather up and until that point I understood at least to a degree, the upcoming consequences.

That was until the end of Act 2: I got to the pool at the bottom of the Gauntlet of Shar. The game does provide a warning that it is a significant event and to tie up loose ends. I did that. I understood that this was the first step to the end of Act 2. Thus, I completed all my quests left over from Act 1 and other things in Act 2, except for any quests that I understood to be part of the finale, including:
- Rescuing the Tieflings I'd been helping since Act 1
- Lifting the curse of the Shadowlands
- Recruiting Halsin to my party

Importantly, I had not yet been to Moonrise Tower, what I thought was only to be assaulted at the very end of the act so I was trying to do everything else before going there. Frankly, I got to the mausoleum before I even knew where the tower was.

So, thinking it was time to address all the end of act stuff, I dive into the pool, do my business, and then all the quests failed.

What I have since learned is that you're supposed to go to Moonrise before tackling the Gauntlet of Shar. Which did not make any logical sense to me.


While I finished the act, I struggle to want to keep playing because now it feels like my role in the story, what was perhaps the best part of this game, is no longer relevant, the game has a railroad for me, and I'm punished for not following it, but it also doesn't seem interested in letting me know that I'm off the path, thus cutting off a lot of content.

Cities Skylines is to SimCity as Humankind is to Civilization VI
Summary
Humankind is the next generation of the historical 4x. It isn't perfect, and I'm sure it will have many updates to fix some exploits and balance some civs, but overall, it is a breathtaking experience. It has a intense mechanical depth in district placement and building of infrastructure, how you spend you money and industry on these things. Those decisions play into the stability of your cities which can be a delicate balance. The combat mechanics are deep, but generally easy to understand. I have yet to experience multiplayer.

Pros
-Deep city planning and exploitation
-Different levels of micromanagement depending on your play style
-Every game will have impactful choices
-Narrative Events
-Terrain driven combat mechanics

Cons
-Combat line of sight is complex and can be confusing.
-Stability isn't well explained, and it can be challenging to come back from the brink
-Pollution and climate change aren't yet well implemented, and the effects can take you by surprise
-Religion lacks depth

Final Thoughts
If you like the historical 4x genre (Civ) or Amplitude's other 4x titles, you may just love this one. It's the future of the genre.

This is a great puzzle game. Rich environments, tough puzzles, just enough freedom. Incredibly enjoyable game with many layers and hours of play.
