It's an intriguing concept and I'm glad it exists as a point of variation/exploration of the detective genre, but it's just too slow. There's no subtitle option, no option to change the playback speed, and skipping at all bars some achievements. It's a shame because these are compelling mysteries and a unique format otherwise.

A wonderful potted single-sitting or two-night detective game, absolutely faultless execution and with a carefully-designed escalating arc that taxes you the right amount throughout.

A charming, sweet, heartwarming puzzle game. Influenced by Gone Home, but with the lush vibrant visuals and lighting of The Witness. Puzzle elements are light, but require lateral thinking and deduction. it nods towards Golden Idol or Obra Dinn but without becoming frustrating or overwhelming. This is what I would use to introduce my nieces and nephews to the joy and delight of gaming!

A gentle orienteering game. Explore a slice of fantastical wilderness to find trig points, and triangulate using sight-lines to satisfyingly reveal parts of the map. A balm for the soul, a walking simulator with a purpose and a definitive end. Delightful!

Not worth it for the single-player, especially if you loved the previous games and wanted more of the same. Probably some interesting new hooks in multiplayer, but very much the end of the series for me.

Every so often you're changed by a film, or a book, or a story told to you by someone who asked of you only that you sit and listen. And, one in a hundred, or one in a thousand, a game will move you in a way other than awe or laughter. I played To The Moon. It poured sadness into me. And I played Thomas Was Alone, and it filled me with fragile optimism and hope. And I played this game, and it filled me with bleakness. Bleakness, not of an external existential sort, but an internal failure to recognise the value in ones self.

I can't say I enjoyed this game. I did not laugh, I did not smile, I will never replay it. But it changed me, by connecting me with a human story that at the same time was impossibly alien and terrifyingly familiar.

I heartily recommend replaying Hotline Miami instead of playing this much-desired sequel. The levels are long, brutal, and hard, even by the standards of the first game. There's too much wide open space, hidden distances from which a dozen unseen enemies can snipe. And a death doesn't mean a satisfying Super Meat Boy cycle of die-run-die-run-die-run-win; when you lose 30 seconds per death progress rather than 3 then playing becomes a chore.

If anyone needs me, I'll be replaying Hotline Miami 1.
