I can't say that I love Call of Juarez the way it deserves to be loved. I always run into some trouble with the aiming or with the controls which takes the edge off what would otherwise be an all-timer, honed to the sharpest edge. I think though that most anyone will like the arcade-y shooter, and it holds up graphically and mechanically more than a decade later. And the unquestionable winner is the narrative. The story telling and voice-acted narration are what really make it shine. That's what stuck with me the first time, and that is why I returned after all this time. And I may return again. 8/10

Ancient Enemy is so close to being a great game, but suffers from strangulation. You can only play levels once. You can't access most of the customization elements until very late in the game. This game needed to have a game mode where you had all the items and options available and fought enemies in a more freeform, replayable setting. As is, it barely gets a pass.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior was a great game for its time. The level of scripting allows for an unparalleled sense of exploration, but the veneer is thin. Enemy intelligence is all over the place, as they act oblivious to bodies, but are alert to silenced sniper rounds whizzing by instantly and know your location at the drop of a hat. This makes the cover system and a lot of the feeling of tactically picking off a camp very unsatisfying. There's no sense of line of sight or range. Its a bit of a shame.

I played Lost Nova in what felt like delirium. I was constantly charmed and pleased with simple gameplay, fun navigation and straightforward progression in a genre that every time before has felt like hollow busywork. And then, it was over, just as I felt sated. A perfect game in some ways.

Kami is a beautiful little implementation of colorfill puzzles, with some particularly nice handcrafted levels and pleasant design. I played it more than a decade ago, and having come back to it and forgotten all the solutions, I found it just as charming as the first time.

A great synthesis of open world exploration and boss fights, distilling it down to a charming experience. The bosses were very hard, and I had to turn the game speed down slightly, but I enjoyed getting thrown into the frying pan and having to figure out the mechanics in situ. 9/10

A great twist on the Balatro and Scrabble games. I enjoyed figuring out the optimal strategy and breaking the maximum integer.

The game is fundamentally worth a couple dollars. The multiplayer is dead, and thank god because in order to grind the resources required to do well and have a cohesive build, you need to get a big win-streak, and that's only possible vs the AI. The realm mode is bad, because movement and exploration are penalized. The customization is broken, with custom staves and robes now being impossible to craft, leaving you at the whims of a baffling lootbox system to get what you need, and then having to wade through hundreds of items to actually get that equipped.

But beyond all that, there is a fun game of wizard chess, requiring strategy, thought, knowledge and learning. And that's rare. Truly, chaos is reborn.

Finally, another game to scratch the same itch as Obra Dinn! This gives me hope that these ganes can sprout into a whole genre of "who's who" puzzle games. Using the meta laws of name inheritance was fun. IIt relies on something complex that most people are already cursorily familiar with. The choice to set it in the 90s was clever, giving search tools but nothing too powerful. The game was its own sequel too, and I highly recommend them both played back to back. Learning all the family connections and unraveling the small mystery each time was fun. 10/10

I like games that rely on complex systems that most people already know. That's what made Balatro so successful last year, even if I didn't like it. Family trees are a mess, and the game gave a lot up by choosing to provide the structure and name pools each time. It also obeyed conservation of relevance, with only three or four red herrings the entire game. Both made the game ultimately quite easy, but not so easy as to be mindless. The searching and deducing still had bite and felt satisfying. All in all, I'd say this was a great puzzle game. 10/10

Verlies 2 is trying to be an old school dungeon crawler, and approaching it with the design sensibilities of the 80's. The game is brutally hard, with experimentation and resources constrained down to a very narrow field of options. The economy of health loss, equipment durability loss, and the potion and repair systems that serve to restore it can quickly become a vice grip, as you run out of hitpoints to explore the dungeon, run out of money, and become unable to escape impending death. Furthermore, most of the systems for upgrading gear are effectively a trap, as enchanting, buying or improving best gear has very little return on investment without control over the upgrades, the steep chance of item deletion, and the need to preserve money to avoid the aforementioned deathspiral.

At the end of that journey of learning what skills are worthwhile, how to spend your money and how to conserve hitpoints in battle through judicious stamina and shield management, you get a truly mediocre game. The end result is a sense that the best way to play is to simply complete the first level, use the 100+ gold to gamble, and if you win 7 or 8 consecutive games, then you have the thousands of gold required to actually escape the hamster wheel.

The game has few quality of life features, a few bugs and editing mistakes, and a twisted sense of fun. I cannot recommend it.
