I suppose it's pretty telling that the best experience I had with this game involved me using Cheat Engine to change the leveling system. There really isn't a single part of this game that respects the players time, but I feel like that is more the norm than the exception nowadays. The biggest flaw with this game is definitely the perpetuity of its EA status -- I saw as much of the available content that was in the game a couple years ago and redownload to find that there is nothing new that I would want to explore. I want to run quests and storylines that feed into this grand narrative of a nation at war but instead I'm just clearing out underground dungeons over and over again. Even the manticore and troll bosses felt completely separated from any kind of narrative. The game just feels half-baked because even with the sandbox elements there's just not much to work towards. Upgrading gear fells like much more of a chore than it's worth and traversing the world map on foot feels like literal torture but you are disincentivized from moving your caravan since you have to manually get straw or herbs or vegetables to feed the horses. Also I don't really understand why there is a crafting mechanic when it plays such an unimportant role in the game; carrying materials for crafting is so much worse than carrying the thing itself and you cannot reliably find ingredients to craft with in a dungeon. Cooking also just feels so unneccesary that you're almost better off just eating raw ingredients if you can't reach a cooksite. You would hope the systems in a game like this would complement one another but as of right now they all function almost completely independently. There is a lot that I like in this game but ultimately it all feels tacked on with no real backbone on which they can coalesce.

The game describes itself as having a "200+ hour main campaign", but I think that's a bit misleading personally. A better way to put it is that this game necessitates you put that much time into it if you want to explore it to its fullest. I think that's fun for people like me who like to see the emergent gameplay that can result, but in this case I think it really puts a damper on the games ability to appeal to more casual gamers. Let me try to illustrate what I mean: you might spend about 40 mins running a sidequest but on the final fight you end up losing all your cats. Well guess what? You get one item your cats found during that entire run -- and only one. You see the issue? This game really only awards success and highly punishes failure. In The Binding of Isaac, there are a myriad of ways to unlock new items just by playing, but in Mewgenics you can only unlock new content by winning runs. A casual player might take a couple months just to unlock their first new class if they're only playing one or two games a day. Other reviews go over all the good stuff about this game -- and there is a lot of good stuff here. I would recommend this game generally, but know that it is a pretty major time commitment. I think it'll be interesting to see how people feel about the meta-progression of the game after the initial hype around its release dies down.

TL:DR -- Good game, brutal grind. Game only rewards successful runs. Losing a run feels like 95% of your progress gets flushed down the toilet (not much to learn other than some enemies can instantly end your run lmao).

this feels so much like a poorly translated manhua its crazy. the game really does not put its best foot forward by having the prologue be following an arrow for 40+ mins to go to cutscenes of dialogue that are either barely parsable or completely redundant. considering the game "will feature a large number of story-driven cutscenes" it's a hard pass from me

I got probably 10 hours of REAL enjoyment from this game. After that point most all of my runs started to feel nearly identical to one another and it wasn't worth the hassle to try and get a good run going with specific memory cards. Still, I think I payed a fair price for the amount of fun I had with the game. That being said, the devs have teased a DLC that I believe this game has no right having, but that's just me.

Honestly, more than anything else, I think this is a game that you need to watch someone play a run before you decide whether or not to buy it. I can't say it isn't a bad game, there's certainly stuff that I like about it; I just think the core gameplay loop is extremely dull. I (perhaps foolishly) was anticipating the game to be "souls-like" in the ARPG approach of having an interconnected world with themed areas as you move through the game. That's not what this is at all. This game is a pretty standard-fare "looter" extraction shooter and it does not do much to deviate from that. You essentially choose a map to go to fight waves of enemies ("dangerous areas" are marked on your map when you load in), collect supplies (mostly just in-game currencies i.e. souls and gold coins) and defeat bosses. I don't think I would necessarily dislike this loop if there were more objectives to choose from when selecting your map, but you seemingly just load into the same large, empty-feeling maps to do the same boring objective. I also think that the rouge-lite elements of the game (each expedition allows you to choose perks when you clear the aforementioned dangerous areas) make the runs I did feel really inconsistent. The game also does a very bad job of introducing itself; you'll get dropped into the hub world and see countless things locked behind level caps or require a certain amount of progression. You end up seeing more stuff that you can do LATER with no path for how to get to those things. Also I just personally hate games that have a stamina system that drains on jumping, it legitimately makes all platforming feel worse.

TL;DR Make sure you understand that this is an extraction shooter first-and-foremost before buying it because I did not. I'd recommend looking for gameplay footage on YouTube first. I essentially got myself hyped up to play first person dark souls with guns but that is NOT what this game is.

wanted to ride around on a cool hoverboard but the game kept stopping me for boring arena gunfights :( the gameplay trailer gives the impression that the movement and combat mechanics come together in a more impressive manner than they actually do based on my experience. all in all i would say this game has a heavier emphasis on combat than movement which i just dont find compelling at all.

I'm a fan of Frictional's work, but this game has the same problem that a lot of PC games from the late 90s to the early 2010s have in that they are no longer supported. Similar to a game like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, this game simply was not made for hardware that exists today. In trying to play The Dark Descent, my aspect ratio cannot be set properly; the game either stretches past my screen or is shrunk too small (even when set to my screens resolution). I recommend watching a longplay video on YouTube for The Dark Descent and buying Amnesia: The Bunker :)

What a joke of a port man. Button functionality like evading, a main mechanic of the game is bound to double click on a key?? I started the game on hard but decided that it wasn't fun at all on that difficulty but I COULDN'T START A NEW GAME!!! In what world do you overlook something so simple? Whatever, if a game is more headache than it's worth, then I'm not gonna play it. Play this one with a controller and don't play on hard mode where the enemies are complete sponges for attacks and the counter system seemingly fails 2 out of every 3 times.

This game isn't even worth $2.50. This was one of the most soulless, cynical, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game I've played. It literally feels like Rebellion made an asset flip using their own assets. Do yourself a favor and don't get suckered in by the $2.50 price tag, there's a reason you haven't heard of this game before.

One of my favorite gaming pastimes is going onto Sven-Coop and playing on random maps that have been mostly forgotten; this game is highly reminiscent of that experience. The city of Babbdi is so interesting in its layout, with buildings and entrances placed seemingly arbitrarily and with the multitudinous means of navigating the world. Don't be intimidated by the reviews referring to the game's parkour aspects as the items you can pick up give quite a lot of options in terms of navigating through the city. While there isn't much in terms of an actual story - you need a train ticket to leave the city - the subtext on its own is enough to be interesting. The sound can be extremely abrasive at times (although I would argue that's by design), but for the most part, all of sounds of the city do an excellent job at reinforcing the dreary, uncanny aesthetic of the game. If you like exploration, are interested in dystopian world-building, or just appreciate projects with strong artistic direction, then I would recommend BABBDI.
