I was enjoying the game at first but the more I played and as I got to the end of the game the more the cracks started showing. To put it simply, there are way way way too many instances of instant death mines or other things either dropping directly into the player or appearing under the player without any warning, and I've had several instances where because of the character I was using and the way the boss was playing out (especially true on what I think is the final boss) where I literally could not proceed. I was trapped in a tiny box with a giant boss and I had to destroy things to drop the laser walls, but those things were on the other side of the arena and I had a short ranged weapon. There is a dodge but for some insane reason it's tied to weapon switching so it's not something you can just bust out, and I would have had to bust it out multiple times in sequence to get to the things I had to destroy.

If the bosses were balanced so that the different characters could all have realistic attempts at beating them, and if they removed even half of the instant death enemies dropping onto the player then this would be more enjoyable. As it is it's just frustrating.

This is a review in progress. I like to jot down my thoughts so I don't forget so I will update this review when I know when I am satisfied.

This game is a visual novel. If you are reading this review then you probably know what that is and you already know if this type of game is what you're looking for. Expect a lot of reading.

The main setup for the story is that you are a manga-ka who hates raccoons and is bad at making manga about killing raccoons. One thing leads to another and you join an occult club and parts of you are replaced with parts of Kurokami-sama, a powerful demon who chose you to go out and kill other demons and then use their corpses to prepare a feast so she can eat them and become more powerful and then escape her prison. The usual story.

Kurokami-sama's Feast has plenty of reading but it also has what I'm calling a "daily planner" mode where you are given a set number of action points and spiritual energy and have to manage both to make sure you kill enough demons before your action points run out so Kurokami-sama won't get all mad and kill you. The way it works is that you have a list of known demon sightings in your email and a list of locations you can visit. Each visit takes up 1 action point. Some demon sightings are not in your email so you need to visit a location and see if anyone there has seen anything.

Fighting the demon takes up spiritual energy (usually 70 out of 100) so you cant just bop from one location to the next, taking out demons as you go. You need to balance rest, visits to fun places (like the river for a swim), and demon killing to make sure you kill enough demons and always have enough energy to do so. In addition to that there's information and training that can be used to learn more about Kurokami-sama herself. It's nothing super involved and the game is still a visual novel but it's enough to add a little variety.

The story is interesting too. There's the main plot of dealing with your relationship with Kurokami-sama, but there's also little side stories for each demon you have to kill. Again, its nothing huge, but you get to learn about what the demon is, why its there, ect. Then you kill it.

So far the game is neat. If you like VNs and light horror or demon business then check it out.

While I don't think Ys IX is as good as Ys VIII it's fine on it's own. The open world city might not be all that fun or interesting to run around in and the first 20 or so hours is just running around the city and fighting through boring dungeons while waiting for the story to pick up but eventually you can leave the city and things take a turn. Not an interesting or even exciting turn but at least it's different.

The touted movement options (grapple, wall run, glide) aren't that fun to use because of how limited they are at the start and how the game never really does anything interesting with them. You can run up most flat walls but the developers put edges on the tops of the walls they don't want you running up (most of them). You can glide but the stamina bar runs out real quick. The grapple points are far enough apart and don't give much of an advantage over staying on the ground. You could grapple onto an enemy to move in close and that's as interesting as it gets. There's not really a way to get creative with the tools you are given.

I played on hard and even then I was able to mash my way through all dungeons and bosses. Not a single boss required that I do anything other than spam attacks. All Grimwald Nox events can be S ranked with ease the first time through. And even though they tightened up the window for the flash guard and flash move it's still possible to abuse it by mashing.

As for the story I wasn't really into it. I like the adventure aspect of Ys and for Ys IX you are stuck in a city for almost the entire game. You do get to go out into the fields surrounding it later on but there's zero exploration or discovery. The characters are OK (except Hawk who I don't like and the story spends too much time focusing on this nerd) but I never got attached to them or attached to any part of the story like I did with Ys VIII.

So why did I thumbs up this game? I don't think it's bad and there's no middle option. I wouldn't recommend this as babies first Ys but it's better than Seven. Play VIII instead.

Ys 8 is the best Ys and also a great game. You need to play it if you like action RPG. Even if you don't. Play it.

This game is still early access so a lot could change but it would need to change drastically for this to end up a decent game. It sort of plays like Ratchet and Clank but the level design is pretty much large open areas and enemies that run at you. The moving around and jumping doesn't feel right, the combat doesn't feel right, the controller support is barely there. So called "secret areas" have portals to them out in the open but the critical path is hidden in a crack in a wall. Nothing feels like it was placed for a reason.

There are various holiday events in the game going back to 2017 so this has been in development for a while but when I look at what is in the game and what they plan on having in the final game it seems like it's gonna take another 3 or so years to even get that far, and that is if they cool it on the events and costumes and just focus on making the core game better.

This used to be a glowing review but the developers at Voidpoint and 3D Realms decided to cave into the incel gamergate pressure and declare that gay jokes are welcome in their games. I cannot recommend anyone buy this game and support these cowards.

AMID EVIL has had more patches and while it's still not a complete game they did make some changes that made me like it more. My original review is down below so you can see where my thoughts started. Here's what I think of the changes!

Being able to toggle soul mode at any time is a good change. It can be disabled if you like it the old way and that's good.

The biggest issue I had with the previous versions is the enemy AI where they would all just run at you. This has been adressed to an extent. The enemies will now dodge around and avoid attacks, flying enemies will hover around in the sky and shoot at you, ground enemies with ranged attacks will hang back and pester you with shots, and it feels better to fight these groups when they dont all just rush you. They will still end up coming straight at you but at least they don't exclusively do that, they'll do other things too.

As it stands now, I can tentatively give a thumbs up to AMID EVIL. When it comes out of early access I'll revise my review again and give a final verdict but for now it's ok!

ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was looking forward to this.

Makes sense too, seeing as how Amid Evil looks cool. It captures the early 3D look better than DUSK and not many games are going after the Heretic/Hexen style. And seeing as how I'm a big fan of retro fps games I dropped some money on this as soon as it became available.

And at first I was having fun. The architexture and level design in the first world is neat and it feels good to move around. Unfortunately, as soon as the combat started things went south.

To put it plainly, the enemy AI is abysmal. Every enemy in the game sans the golems runs straight into your face. Makes sense for melee dudes but even the enemies that have ranged attacks and can fly will fly in a straight line into your face and attack from there. The result is a game where you backpedal in circles and attack the enemies that are all lined up chasing after you. Or, if you're feeling cheeky, you can stand on the other side of a doorway and attack the enemies as they all funnel through it.

This isn't fun. Even in old games like Doom each enemy has a way it attacks and has its own traits and the level designers can take that into consideration when placing them in the level. In Amid Evil the enemies all run at you and attack. This is every combat encounter. Each episode features its own set of enemies and while this sounds like it would lead to a lot of variety it doesn't, it just makes each episode have 3-4 dudes to attack instead of pulling from a larger pool.

Making things worse is the weapon variety. It's basically the loadout from Doom with some minor variations, like the spike mace (the best weapon). In theory each weapon will have its use and you would need to decide when the best situation for each one is but in practice you can use any one at any time because the enemies all do the same thing and it doesn't matter.

The final bit about the combat is the inclusion of a soul overpower mode. As you kill things they drop souls and when you collect enough of them the screen will get a haze around the edge and the next attack you do will trigger soul mode. This mode powers up all the weapons and adds neat effects to them such as a ricochet effect to the sword and making the laser on the trident a little bigger.

In my experience there are 3 things that happen with this power:
  1. I get enough souls and trigger the mode on the last few enemies and then have to watch the meter empty as I frantically run around looking for something else to attack.
  2. I kill all the enemies and I end up with enough souls to start the next encounter with the soul power but on my way to it I come across 1 or 2 stray enemies and end up wasting it on them.
  3. I run around and try to aggro as many enemies as I can before popping it.

None of these are particularly fun.

And I understand why the developers wanted to make sure you can't just pop this power whenever you wanted because it really does make you strong, its just that I rarely had the opportunity to use the power to go wild on big groups.

Also each episode has a boss at the end and they suck too.

I don't like trashing games and I bet the developers worked hard on this game but the entire time I was playing it I was bummed out with what I was playing and was thinking of what could have been.

Amid Evil, at its best, is boring.

Short version: This is the best JRPG on steam.

At first I didn't like this game. 10 hours in and I was left wondering "When does it start? Nothing has happened yet. Also my attacks keep missing."

But not long after, as soon as the first big urgent moment started the game clicked with me. This isn't a game that rushes you along from one big event to the next, it's a game that doesn't mind taking it slow and focusing on world and character building. Yeah, nothing major happens for quite a while but once it does it means something. The slow parts give context to the urgent parts. Over time the story builds right up to the only cliffhanger ending I actually liked and I had to know what happens next immediately.

The only real negatives I can think of are the annoying amount of missed physical attacks in the first few hours and some of the later battles can become a slog. Not tough, they just take a while. And I guess the ending is bad too since you need to buy Trails in the Sky SC to find out what happens.

But forget all that, just buy this stupid game.
