I enjoy boomer shooters and I was always curious how this one played as I'm unfamiliar with Warhammer as a franchise other than a surface level understanding about the Space Marines and the everlasting crusade war against demons and sentient machines with a mix of nihilism philosophy thrown in. I was looking forward to trying this out since it had a very unique tone and artstyle compared to so many Boomer Shooter clones that have come out of the woodwork as of late - regardless of the series I was unfamiliar with.

What I wasn't expecting was corridors of enemies spawning right in front of me, copypasted assets in every level and an incredibly uninspired gameplay loop. The guns feel punchy but not punchy enough considering everything is a gigantic metal abomination or demonic entity. The shotgun sounding like it could do some serious damage but in-game it takes 2 or 3 shots to kill lower-tier enemies. The heavy bolter forcing you to slow to a crawl to fire it while enemies will gang up on you and force you to take damage, even on easier skills which becomes almost entirely redundant by the standard issue SMG you get in the first level.

I was so fed up with how boring the gameplay loop was that I couldn't even finish the first chapter when I got to to the Escher church with its portals with dizzying parallax and just spitting me out into an instant kill pit and by that point I figured it wasn't worth seeing it through until the end. The one time the level layout changes and it's something so annoyingly obtuse and frustrating I just couldn't even be bothered to complete it.

Maybe the sequel is better, who knows. I just couldn't stomach any more of this game when so many other better ones exist.

The amount of times I broke a level unintentionally, clipped through the level, pressed a button to call a platform and when I went back around to the same part of the level and couldn't call for the same platform because the button only lets you press it once and on top of all that - resetting the level costs a life? Abhorrent game design, bad music, bad enemy design, bad map layout, barely anything is explained to the player, it's like it's trying to invoke 90's nostalgia by throwing the player in the deep end and it's so pleased with itself for "staying true to the originality of 90's shooters" but plays like unity trash, you move at either a snail's pace or zooming so fast you could make yourself motion sick with the walk and run toggle, respectively. The amount of environmental and destructible props make trying to gauge what is and isn't about to shoot you extremely annoying (especially in the Egypt stages where the enemies and props look almost identical). The use of lighting in secret rooms are a genuine eye sore when looking at levels that are 90% grey and navy blue to a blinding cyan with shining exp treasure.

You can't refund spent skill points unless you 'hack' your save file (there are steam guides on how to do this), you have no idea what the spells actually do against enemies until you buy them and try them outside of a single paragraph of text which considering how claustrophobic some of the early levels are some spells have splash damage that can hurt the player, much like the dynamite weapon. Which tries to emulate Blood's dynamite but because there's no crosshair 99% of the time you throw dynamite while facing an enemy and you throw it into the sun or arcing it completely over an enemy, you'd have better luck throwing it at your feet and sprinting away holding the S key.

The fact that some levels can have 4 or more secrets in them but if you wallhump and mash the interact button there's a non-zero chance you will clip through the wall and fall through the map. Which happened to me several times during my playthroughs (forcing me to restart and lose lives)

I can't recommend this game to anyone, it might be the most broken boomer shooter I've ever played. I hope the sequel is up to snuff.
