Considerably worse than It Takes Two on all dimensions. Have no finished it yet, and it's not clear if I will as it's genuinely not very fun to play. I will likely replay It Takes Two before finishing this.

I have given a lot of thought into why this game doesn't work, but nobody reads these, and I don't want to give any free data to the sentiment analysis bots scraping these posts.

Not usually a fan of "cozy games", but I knew that Davey wouldn't disappoint. This is a one of a kind game with a storyline I haven't quite seen before. It uses the mechanics of a cozy game to tell an excellently crafted narrative about burnout and achievement. If you're a fan of Minecraft's music, C418's soundscape perfectly fits the narrative of this game, and I found myself sometimes just sitting around listening to the music. Really unique game, would highly recommend this to anyone.

Overall this game is fine, it's fully functional and it's an achievement to develop and publish a game solo. But it needs more refining if the goal is to find success with a broader audience. I was interested in this game after watching the devlogs. As a fellow game developer, I love supporting developers who are able to ship a product. The devlogs were well produced and entertaining and I'm generally a fan of 2D platformers and I'm a big fan of schmovement, so I thought I'd enjoy this game. In summary, I did not.

The problems start instantaneously: every time you start the game, you're presented with a loading menu that does not remember your decisions across sessions. So every time I start the game I have to re-bind to WASD, turn off the sfx, and then I can attempt to start the game. Even that, though, requires you to wait through two (I believe) unskippable scenes which add no value to the game. I did say I have to turn the sfx off, and that's not an opinion, I think it's required. The sound effects, which are lightly modified bfxr outputs, are not able to be tolerated with decent quality headphones. I've made this mistake in games I've made before, where I believe some bfxr/sfxr samples sound good, but really they only sound good on my specific setup. When I try to listen to them on any other device, they're horrible, and that's what's happened here. The music is good, but the playlist style and the lack of transitions makes it feel completely independent of the game itself.

Now, the gameplay is where my opinions are a little mixed. In general I do like the sequencing of most puzzles, but puzzles have many flaws. First off, there are tons of useless platforms and walls in every level. You can often complete the early levels with 1/2 or 1/3 of the obstacles placed in the map. This is fine, maybe you want people who can't platform to have a little helping hand, but the problem is these obstacles get in the way of cool movements. If that was intended, well done, but if you wanted fluid, fast-paced, sick platforming, then the puzzles are actively fighting you. The character also moves like a wet noodle, in my opinion. The movement is very sluggish and unresponsive, and although you DO get used to it during continuous play, whenever I end a session and come back to it my first though is always "oh god" whenever I try to move the character. It's not very tight. The jump timers are also rather anti-schmovement. Coyote time is low, and I've died 100s of times at the floor of a stage because the jump doesn't register before I die -- which in my opinion is anti-fun.

Visuals are clear and effective, I think the game generally looks good. It took me a while to recognize the little diamonds are waypoints for moving platforms, even though I watched a devlog where it was mentioned that the platforms would have visible waypoints. The decision was made to remove the rail the platforms was on, and I think that makes them harder to grok.

Alright. This is gonna' end up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up my life and taking up too much of my time I can already tell. If you liked Slay the Spire or Inscryption, and you have even a subtle appreciation for poker hands, you'll absolutely love this game.

Fantastic game. It's not as hard to play as people made it seem, it just has a lot of depth. I've been waiting for this release for a while and it's been well worth the wait

An absolute gem of a game. Loved every second of the main game (first 3 levels).

This game is an absolute masterpiece. A friend told me to play Slay the Spire first, which I did for about 25 hours and then played this. I'd highly recommend it since that was my first deck builder and I was able to hop onto Inscryption no problem. This game's value and entertainment is worth at least double what they're charging.

Really fun. Only complaint is that the final boss has to be defeated with combat even if you use evasive/pacifist tactics to get there.
